Granthis are good too But the management needs to bit more strict on folks just talking in the main hall like it's a get together or a family function.. ppl are on phone talking to the relatives, while someone is trying to do "Matha Tek" Granthis or someone from the gurudwara needs to tell ppl to either go in langar hall or outside because they are disturbing the peace.. Who knows maybe I will say to them, you would think they are old mighy know better but it is what it is..

There's a reason!!! A temple is a place of devotion not fashion. Women: put your hair up, tie it up, use a garter or clips to put it in a knot. It's only for a few minutes. Show some value to our scriptures!!!!! The management doesn't do anything cause I've highlighted it for them several times!! They don't want to offend donors! They would rather placate the visitors than speak up to the austere reasons!!!!! One sees women respect the tradition and cover their hair/head at the Masjid, and similarly at the Gurdwara. Why can't we shed our vanity for a few minutes. If the board and the people who lead services can fix this, then they have done their duties to adhering to scriptures in the true sense!

Lovely church on the Stanford Campus…read more I had a magical experience here while on a small group tour of the campus earlier this week. While everyone else chose to just walk in and file out along the back aisle, I felt compelled to walk in and sit down, to thank the Almighty for all that is right with the world. A few seconds after I bowed my head in prayer, the most beautiful singing commenced from a far corner of the church! I sat there in bliss, eyes closed, letting the notes wash over me, not worrying about where the rest of my small tour group was. When the music stopped and I glanced behind me, they were all standing there, also in silent awe. Our tour guide thanked me later for staying like I did, otherwise they'd have missed the haunting A Capella music, one of those moments that makes life worth living. Will be back!

I'm reviewing this church as a wedding ceremony venue only…read more I was never the type of girl to dream about her wedding, but after attending several weddings in the past few years at this church, I knew for a long time that this was the church I wished to get married in. The architecture is stunning and the stained glass windows will take your breath away. What I didn't know after putting down the deposit and signing the contract was that there is more to this church than its lovely exterior: the staff at First UMC is amazing and made our wedding incredibly special. And we aren't even members of First UMC ourselves! I think this really speaks volumes about their level of professionalism and service. We ended up paying a little over $1900 total to rent the church facilities and to allow our own musicians to practice in the sanctuary (this cost an extra $150). The rate that's on their website currently includes the services of their wedding/events coordinator, a minister to officiate your ceremony, as well as a pianist/organ player. Our coordinator was Bernadette and she was simply phenomenal. She is well-organized, patient, responsive, and was a much-needed calming presence throughout the entire process for me. On the day we were married, I saw her everywhere! She was running around and actively involved in making sure every aspect ran smoothly. As great as my day-of coordinator was, I know things would have not gone as well had Bernadette not been there. We were married by Pastor Sadie Stone, who is easy-going and well-spoken. She had a lot of great suggestions that helped us solidify the ceremony to what it ended up being and I was very, very thankful for this. The church's organist Sarah Wannamaker has musical talent off the wazoo! My husband is a musician and while I'm practically tone-deaf, I'd like to think that I'm capable of appreciating good music. Meeting up with Sarah and listening to her go through different songs to help us decide what type of musical arrangements we wanted pre- and post-ceremony was one of my favorite aspects of wedding planning! It was like aural cake-tasting! Sarah is so talented and I just loved listening to her go through some of our favorite piano pieces. All in all, I can say with confidence that you're in good hands if you decide to go with First UMC for your wedding ceremony. Nevertheless, there are some things one should be aware of when deciding whether or not this is venue is a good fit for their wedding vision: 1) As a church, they have restrictions, from decorations, to officiants, to music choices, and even to how close photographers/videographers can approach the bridal parting during the ceremony. You won't be, for instance, allowed to throw rice and rose petals. No cameras will also be allowed on the sanctuary stage. As both me and my husband are Christians, we found this more than 100% reasonable as this is a sacred event taking place in a holy sanctuary (and also, can you imagine trying to clean up something like rice grains?!). After all, some churches require that you go through marriage counseling with one of the pastors at the church or may even require you to be a member. I think First UMC does the perfect job of maintaining spiritual integrity without being close-minded in this regard. 2) Related to #1, because there are a lot of restrictions on decorations, you have to decide if you are okay with whatever decorations the church already has. On the day of our wedding, the banners near the large golden cross had cartoonish butterflies and flowers that looked like it was for a youth group service. Normally, the banners are not like that, but just be aware that no matter what the banners are, you won't be able to change them. Personally, I feel like the gorgeous stained glass provides a rich enough color to the church that extensive decorations aren't needed; we didn't put anything in the pews or aisles and just had two large floral pieces flanking either side of the altar area. 3) The location is close enough to Stanford that if there is a Stanford football game at home, parking could be a problem for your guests. We purposely chose a wedding date when Stanford would have an away game. 4) The area in general is very nice and within walking distance to Downtown Palo Alto. However, on the day of our wedding, one our guests was mugged and robbed in broad daylight on her way to the ceremont. The incident occurred on Hamilton and Middlefield, which is literally right by the backside of the church. Again, I want to emphasize that I personally think this area is safe and most people I know would too...but it's important to be careful nevertheless.

We came here for a symphony concert and the church amplified everything perfectly. The pews are pretty comfortable and spacious. Overall, it was a nice, relaxing evening of listening to classical music. They are doing some construction right now though, and what seems to be the obvious front entrance was actually their back entrance during this event. It would have been nice to have some signs directing people to the "front" entrance, as everyone was getting confused.
