    The Silos

Another place that makes my inner town planner well up with pride. Auckland's glorious waterfront until recently has somehow been locked away from its citizens - but no longer. The Wynyard Quarter development has opened up whole new chunks of waterfront for Aucklanders to explore, and the jewel in its crown is Silo Park. There's so much to this park that it's hard to know where to start. There's the Wind Tree sculpture under which kids can often be found messing about in the paddle pool. Adjacent, there's a playground and basketball court. Further on is a gantry for climbing and taking in the views, while the namesake silos themselves stand sentinel over the western end of the park. Beneath, a collection of heritage yachts are moored at a wharf from which some of the best views of the harbour bridge can be found. There's also a piano that moves about the park that anyone can play - a small touch that somehow makes the place feel communal. The park itself is great, but it's the constant stream of events that really give the place life. Every Friday in summer the silos are used for open air cinema which is universally popular. The Silo Markets (selling all sorts of interesting food and crafts) and Silo Sessions (live music/DJ sets) are other regular events. Finally, the headline event is the fantastic Laneway Festival held every January, showcasing the very best in indie rock and roll. In short, there really is something for everyone in Silo Park - every Aucklander needs to visit it.

What to expect at the Silo Friday night movies!!

Silo park is an amazing new addition to Auckland (as of the 2011 rugby world cup), and one that was certainly needed. With a mix of hosting music festivals, markets, and outdoor movies, the Silo area is the ultimate cool new hangout. There have been wonderful graffiti artists who have helped give the newly established area some artistic flare, along with a good selection of bars, restaurants and cafes 50m up at Wynyard Quarter. My favourite use of this area is on a Friday night in summer when they show a movie on one of the silo's and have a late night market. The outdoor movies start screening in warm November and roughly finish end of March when it starts getting a little cooler. Kick off time for the movie is generally at 9:30pm after a short film which usually starts at 9pm once the summer sun goes down. The evening markets and food stalls completely compliment this evening outing. I love getting churros when at the movie as a naughty evening treat. If dessert is jumping the gun and you're yet to have had dinner there is also a wide range of places to eat; mexikai, burgers, pizza and more. This extension of Auckland CBD is also just a great place to come and relax, getting out of the hussle and bussle of city life.

Busy night at the movies :)

Decided that my boyfriend and I would come here on Valentines day because they were showing one of my favourite childhood movies, The Princess Bride. We decided to go early, around 7pm with the movie starting at 9pm...big mistake! We should have left much much earlier as everyone else had the same idea. All the beanbags that they offer (which is awesome by the way) were taken. I had brought along a small blanket and some pillows but they weren't enough, it got very cold and uncomfortable, I wished that I had been smarter like other people and taken camp chairs and worn a big jacket. The food stalls on offer are fab but make sure you take some cash as a lot of them don't accept Eftpos. We ended up leaving before the movie had started, but that was no fault of Silo Parks, only our own. I will definitely be going again, I will just make sure that I am more prepared next time!

My favorite thing about Silo park is that there is no official liquor ban there. This means it's a great place to go on a cheap date with a bottle of cider and sit by the water, or perhaps play the piano that is situated within one of the old grain tanks. The other great thing about Silo park is that it is also fast becoming one of Auckland's event hot spots. They have a regular programme of events - movie nights, bands, and even the Laneway festival was recently held there. The park is edged by restaurants and bars, and entrance to it is via a bridge which goes up and down for boats to go under , something that seems to really excite little kids. There is a (seemingly pointless) metal walkway , which admittedly allows for a semi decent viewing of the harbour, although an equally good one can be had if you walk round to the edge of the dock. There are plenty of superyachts streaming in and constantly so you can get a chance to see how the other half (or 1 percent) really live.

Having decided to try visiting this bird sanctuary on a lark (thanks folks, I'll be here all…read morenight), I was impressed enough with it. One visits by boat either from downtown Auckland (which I imagine is a scenic ride) or from a more remote peninsula near the island where the boat stops just before reaching it (which is nice if you want somewhere free to park for the day). The boat ride is most of the cost; for a small additional fee you get a guided tour lead by one of a remarkably large number of local volunteers. Why not? The guide leads you through the middle of the island with some narration, before finishing at a lighthouse and leaving you the second half of the day to roam alone. There weren't that many visible birds during New Zealand "winter"; you'd here more than you see. The island was once a farm before being purposefully replanted as a forest. Things grow fast here; it looks quite wild. Up to the point of reaching the light house, I'd probably have written a four star review. However, they buried the lead. Exploring alone yielded vast panoramic views of the entire region. The island is centrally located between the city and a variety of other islands. New Zealand's indigenous people are of Polynesian descent, and while you walk around here you might confuse the volcanic landscapes, abundant greenery, and clear turquoise water for a more archetypically Polynesian vacation spot. There are a few swimmable spots. It is a big enough island that there were significant areas of track that I did not see even after hustling around the coastline. Always leave 'em wanting more, the saying goes. If I had occasion to, I wouldn't mine going again, which having paid $60 to see an island that had no trees at the time I was born is something. Tips: *There were a ton of local schoolkids, but the guides kindly separated out kids and adults for the tour, and once you're off the boat, it really isn't an issue. *Adults get free tea and coffee at the end of the tour, but no food. There is literally nothing even to buy. Bring decent food. *A truck loads any bags you might want to leave at the wharf, and carries them to the lighthouse and back, meaning you do not need to carry what you bring while walking the island. *They are very concerned about biosecurity, so wear clean shoes and bring only closed, zippable bags. *Apparently the name means that it's a really windy island. Which it really is. Be ready for wild temperature differences based on wind and shade.

Seriously one of Auckland's greatest outdoor treasures. This pest-free island is a magical place…read morethat harkens back to the days before massive deforestation for farming, hunting, and introduction of pests shrank the population of New Zealand's birds. The bird songs you'll hear here are incredible! Amazing work has been done to reforest native plants and trees, and reintroduce rare birds on this island. You can see hihi (stitchbirds), saddlebacks, kakariki (red crowned parakeets), bellbirds, north island robin, heaps and heaps of tui, wood pigeon, little blue penguins, kokako (if you're lucky) and of course, my favorite - the takahē (a population of less than 300 exist in the world, and this is one of the few places you can see them in the wild - plus BABIES!) So worth paying the $70 to take the ferry out there. Pack your lunch and your sunscreen, bring your swimsuit and good hiking shoes, and get ready for an amazing day. The extra $5 for the guided tour is worth doing at least once. The guides are very knowledgable and will point out the birds and interesting plants and give you a history of the island. However, when we went the second time without the group, we saw heaps more birds, I think as we were separate from many of the larger (noisier) groups. I'm dying to stay overnight at the DOC hut and try to spot a kiwi! The huts are booked well in advance so you're gonna have to troll the website for an opening. Also be sure to book your trip well in advance as the ferry can book up during peak season, and you don't want to miss out!!

The biggest cinema for mainstream movies is Event Cinemas, part of a large commercial complex right in the heart of CBD. Talking with people, this area still hasn't fully recovered since the pandemic, which speaks to why the complex feels relatively empty and quiet. I even had difficulty finding the main entrance as most of the door area that used to have restaurants and bars are empty and looked closed. Entering off the street and going down, only to go up massive escalators inside, I finally found what I was looking for. The theatres are on multiple floors depending on the style of screen (traditional, IMAX, etc.). The ticket lobby and main concession stand is on the third level. Tickets can be purchased off touch screens in the lobby, where you choose your desired seat. Most theatres have recliners or even full day beds, prices depend on time and type of seat. After purchasing my ticket, I went up another level where usually a ticket taker would be, but the table was empty and remained so. I found it odd there was no one checking - I guess trust (or cameras) were ensuring you are a paying customer. There are bars and concession stands in other areas but all were closed on my visit; maybe only peak time they're open. The screen itself was great quality; seats comfortable, prices reasonable for modern movies, and everything was clean. I was happy taking a break from the city for a few hours and would see a movie here again.
