    Waiting for halibut.
    Mary Y.

We had a great time on Silver Fox Charter. We were out nearly six hours for the half day trip. Captain Kenny made sure we fished where we were sure to pull out lots of halibut. He was up beat, honest, and a pleasure to work with. When we returned to shore he arranged with Homer Fish Processor to have our fillets skinned, vacuumed packed, flash frozen, and put in insulated freezer box. The half day charter was $185. Plus tax. And the processing was $36.00 for 14lbs of halibut. Captain Kenny suggested taking a fillet to Pattie's where they grilled it for us on the spot. Delicious! Remember it is appropriate to tip the captain! Have fun!

Silver Fox was amazing! The captain found great fishing spots and we caught our max of halibut, as well as a few sharks and a bat ray! The crew was so helpful and they had our fillets ready to go right off he boat. We are some that night and shipped the rest home. Would definitely use them again!

Well, this is kind of a different review I am writing…read more I actually never took a fishing trip out on the waters of Homer, Alaska with this...North Country Halibut Charters. But... I was walking along the boardwalk area of the downtown Homer Spit section and a boat tour cruise had just completed their expedition. Now afterwards, the passengers were getting a firsthand glimpse into watching their freshly caught king salmons being fileted. Little did I know that after you go out on a fishing charter for the day...it's only customary to then return to the pier and clean and filet your catches. Lol, I have zero fishing experience. So...in getting to watch a professional fisherman/woman do all this for their passengers and witnessing it all with my very own eyes was fascinating! I even recorded it live and added it to my YT Channel...for entertainment purposes only, lol. It was a terrific little exposition, in just how easy it was for the girl to cut open the salmon while efficiently demonstrating her knifing skills. And there was a huge crowd standing around and watching her too. I asked the fisherwoman if I could take a few photos and record a little of her precise fileting and she said that would "be okay and it's fine"...pretty normal for what tourists like myself typically like to do when being exposed to such a cool demonstration. In fact, the girl had a tip jar situated right beside the table counter and of course I happily left her $5 for allowing me to watch. I was quite impressed with her experience, comfortabilities and technique handling such large fish! You could just tell this fisherwoman has been out on the high seas plenty of times and appearing so natural at it all. Unfortunately, I never did take a fishing cruise while in Homer, but after enjoying this fileting demonstration, I started thinking that maybe I should consider participating in a charter in my future travels to all these incredible Alaskan seaports...where they're famously known for catching some of the best fish in the world! In the end, I just appreciated how the tour group caught 5 salmon on their adventure and were now going to enjoy a fresh seafood dinner. Also, the fish they caught were king salmon which I believe are the most prestigious type of salmon you can find. This fileting demonstration was such a pleasant surprise as I was leisurely walking the boardwalk area of downtown Homer Spit. I'm glad I got to experience it.

Our group of five spent two days halibut fishing with them and we maxed out both days. We grabbed a 103, 97, and 85 pounder for our top catches, and pure bragging rights requires me to point out that I landed the 103 and 97 pounders. It should also be brought up that Capt. Eric is a truly passionate fisherman and excellent host. While our goal was halibut when Capt. Eric found a school of rock fish, he stopped so we could catch our limit on them. Talk about a sweet cherry on top of what was already an amazing time. He also went out of the way to give us a chance of seeing some humpback whales, and while it was short lived we did get to see one. I could not stress how much I would recommend fishing with Maverick Charters and Capt. Eric. I have already told my wife that I will be going again!

However, riding out and spending the day with Eric was absolutely different than what we have encountered in the past. He was determined that everyone on the boat caught size-able halibuts, stayed out in the water much longer than the agreed upon time frame and even made us finger licking ceviche from scratch. Incredible time with the fellas. Would highly recommend chartering with them.

Nice 6 passenger boat with good equipment. We hit our limit each day except for the salmon who were a bit elusive. Did catch them but didn't hit the limit, but the crew tried. We were disappointed with our halibut fishing trip. Rob's Trophy Charter booked 17 people on this…read moresmall boat, even though their web site said they would not normally do this (web site says: "We don't like to crowd the boat and normally she averages between 8-12 passengers a trip"). We lined the rails, one person every 3 feet. Because we had so many people fishing, everyone kept getting tangled with each other. I had to reel in my fish, and two other people's fish, because we were all tangled up. It was a lot of work for sure, reeling in 3 fish at the same time, and no fun since they were just being dragged like dead weight. When we left the pier, the captain said that we could go to the spot where we could catch big Halibut, but after trying to fish there, and everyone getting tangled up, we had to cruise another hour, 3 hours total, to arrive at a place where all the fish were relatively small. After about 30 minutes, everyone had their 2 fish limit of small Halibut and we cruised another 3 hours back to port. On top of all this, we were recommended to use "Home Fish Processing", instead of "Coal Point Fish Processing", Coal Point was a closer fish processing company located right there on the pier with the boat. We had fish processed before, and the processor always weighs the fish when you give it to them so everything is up front and expectations are known. Homer Fish Processing does not weigh your fish for you so that you know how much fish you will get frozen. Instead; they just pick it up, take it to their plant and process them. I was not comfortable with this as all of us on the ship, including 2 Boat Charter Captains themselves that were on board, thought that our 2 filleted fish should weight about 20-25 pounds. I picked them up, and based on the weight of our luggage, thought that 20-25 pounds seemed about right. When we picked up our fish all we received was 12 pounds of Halibut fillets each person, basically 6 pounds per fish. On top of that, Home Fish Processing charged us about double what Coal Point Fish Processing quoted us. This is not right! I can't help but wonder if Home Fish Processing is keeping some of the customers fish to sell themselves. Also, is Bob's Trophy Charters getting a kick back from Homer Fish Processing to refer them to customers? In my opinion, something does not smell right hear. I would like to give a shout out to the 2 female deck hands, Cori and another young lady. They worked very had to untangle everyone so many times and did great.
