family fishing

I think your experience here will largely depend on your captain. We had a very young captain that probably hadn't been a captain for long. He was friendly and amazing at remembering people's names! But he also wasn't great at finding fishing spots. The first few hours we caught nothing. He took us to less popular spots that were shieleded from the weather. But they were less popular spots because...there aren't really any fish there. Finally, he got on the radio and started talking to other captains. The weather wasn't that bad. So then he took us to the more popular spots and...we instantlly started pulling up hallibut! We also paid to get King Salmon and...despite the perserverence and elaborate rigging of the captain and deckhand...we didn't get any. I guess we should've held off on buying a King stamp. This isn't the fault of the captain and deckhand, but it is the fault of the company. They shouldn't have been charging for King charters if no one is cathing Kings yet.

Max and his crew were awesome! very knowledgeable and easy going! Everything was simple and taken care of! I would definitely recommend going with HOC!

Successful trip!

The Homer Ocean Charters experience was amazing. All their captains are very experienced and patient with novice fisherman and know the fishing spots for the different species. We booked the King Salmon, Halibut and Rock Fish and got our limits. The captain even slowed down so we could see Orcas, bears near the coast and humpback whales. I would book with this company again. And they even filets your fish! Great service and experience.

We walked in and were able to reserve a spot for kayaking the next day. We ended up with a windy day so our host gave us the option to cancel with no penalty or scout for a spot to kayak. We opted to go for it. Joel and Rochelle were pros, had back up plans in case we ran into something unexpected and made it very safe. They both gave us history and lessons in birds and wildlife. They were fun, friendly and professional. Wow are we tired today!

Yelp readers, please learn from my mistake and don't do what I did... I almost always book a vendor who has been rated / reviewed but for our family trip to Homer and the #1 event we had planned, a fishing charter, I thought I could save myself a few bucks and find a guy myself. I found a captain who had a boat and a website and a Facebook page and everything, and I paid in full in advance to reserve a trip with him... And the night before we were supposed to go, he bailed on us with a weak excuse of why he couldn't take us. We had a really set schedule and only the only possible day to go out fishing, so our chance to go fishing was almost ruined. At that late hour, I wasn't even sure I'd be able to reach another charter company, let alone find space for a party of 6 the next day. I am SO, so grateful to Homer Ocean Charters who took my call late in the evening and went above and beyond to be able to find a boat and a captain to take my family out the next day as we had originally planned. Especially Artis (my sincere apologies if I've misspelled that!) in the front office, who was so kind and helpful. Homer ocean charters got us all set up with Captain Brian and deckhand Ben, two of the most genuinely good guys you could ever hope to meet. They took such great care of us, made sure we had a great time, and of course, made sure we caught lots of fish!! Both guys were just incredible with the two kids in our group (ages 11 & 13). We really could not have asked for a better time! Please, please do yourself a favor. Stop looking now, and just book with Homer Ocean Charters. They will truly make your trip!! And whatever you do...DON'T trust a company not rated / reviewed! I never will again!

The biggest catch on our boat weighed in ~80 pounds!

Great staff. I've never been on a boat before, let alone deep sea ocean fishing, so the energy they brought was nice

7 days in Alaska and struggling to get a fish. We even hired guides and still nothing. Was…read morestarting to think we were bad luck. My wife charters Captain Will on boat tuff stuff. On our way out Captain Will briefed us, I sat up there to ask questions to see how I can up our odds of catching. I really wanted my kids and wife to catch. Will was very confident we will have a great time. Well I'll just put it this way. He went way above and beyond. The first 10 minutes lines were in the water we were already bent. 100lb halibut, yellow eyes, more halibut and even big lingcod are coming in. All fricken day. What a great time. We will definitely be booking again. Thank you Captain Will.

Well, this is kind of a different review I am writing…read more I actually never took a fishing trip out on the waters of Homer, Alaska with this...North Country Halibut Charters. But... I was walking along the boardwalk area of the downtown Homer Spit section and a boat tour cruise had just completed their expedition. Now afterwards, the passengers were getting a firsthand glimpse into watching their freshly caught king salmons being fileted. Little did I know that after you go out on a fishing charter for the day...it's only customary to then return to the pier and clean and filet your catches. Lol, I have zero fishing experience. So...in getting to watch a professional fisherman/woman do all this for their passengers and witnessing it all with my very own eyes was fascinating! I even recorded it live and added it to my YT Channel...for entertainment purposes only, lol. It was a terrific little exposition, in just how easy it was for the girl to cut open the salmon while efficiently demonstrating her knifing skills. And there was a huge crowd standing around and watching her too. I asked the fisherwoman if I could take a few photos and record a little of her precise fileting and she said that would "be okay and it's fine"...pretty normal for what tourists like myself typically like to do when being exposed to such a cool demonstration. In fact, the girl had a tip jar situated right beside the table counter and of course I happily left her $5 for allowing me to watch. I was quite impressed with her experience, comfortabilities and technique handling such large fish! You could just tell this fisherwoman has been out on the high seas plenty of times and appearing so natural at it all. Unfortunately, I never did take a fishing cruise while in Homer, but after enjoying this fileting demonstration, I started thinking that maybe I should consider participating in a charter in my future travels to all these incredible Alaskan seaports...where they're famously known for catching some of the best fish in the world! In the end, I just appreciated how the tour group caught 5 salmon on their adventure and were now going to enjoy a fresh seafood dinner. Also, the fish they caught were king salmon which I believe are the most prestigious type of salmon you can find. This fileting demonstration was such a pleasant surprise as I was leisurely walking the boardwalk area of downtown Homer Spit. I'm glad I got to experience it.

You buy your fishing tags at the office and it lets you catch 2 halibuts and 1 king Salmon. We went out about 25 miles out to do our fishing. The capitan was a great host he lets us drink beers and we all had a great time. Be sure to pack a lunch since all there required is to get ya on the fish. After fishing for 4 hrs we cruised up the inlet to try our luck on salmon. Out of 10 of us on the boat I was the only one to catch a 24lb king salmon. After we got back to the dock they filet the fish for ya. If your looking to ship back your fish they will take care of all shipping for ya. I highly recommend this captain he definitely puts us on lots of halibut. Great times for sure

Old captain that seemed to rub people the wrong way is gone and retired. Fools gold was our ship, and was in fine enough condition, head was clean, plenty of room for the people in and out. We had the pleasure of being with Capitan Dave C. and Deckhand/first mate Ash. The two of them really made the trip incredible. We went with a group size of 7 plus a baby, and they were both insanely accommodating to the little one, let us setup a pack and play in the berth, even checked in on her when we were out fishing and she was sleeping. Tons, and I mean tons, of great conversations, hysterics laughter, and learning a boat load about the area, the fish types, everything under the moon, honestly. Both of them gave clean and consice rules, what to do, where to be in the boat, showed us how to bait, where to land the catch. Very patient folks, and made this excursion top notch. If you want to go halibut fishing, and want to have a good time, go with them. You'd be making a mistake to go with anyone else. Tl;dr: Awesome crew, awesome fish, very nice and would never fish with anyone else given the choice. All limited out, every one of us, with some impressive catches.
