The owner came out immediately upon exiting our car and gave us a tour of the lavender fields. We were allowed to walk through it and touch the plants to experience how they smelled differently. He told us of the various uses. They have two well-established plots and one in the making. They also have a beautiful flower garden and are working on a wildflower garden in the back. At the end we visited their store which is outdoors but a building is on its way. They sell products at markets as well. We bought lavender lemon lotion, lavender soap, chocolate lavender brownie mix, and lavender simple syrup. Our friend bought a roll on scent and a fresh lavender bundle. The bottom line is the family were so very friendly. They decided to go and pick fresh lavender (of any kind she wanted) for the bundle. They will talk about anything regarding the business, growing lavender, the history of the place. It's not a huge establishment but we were so impressed by our visit. Worth the drive!

What better way to learn about the Dairy's State's dairy industry than visiting a real diary farm and witness it's moo-vie stars (yes, there is a short movie and it actually is very educational and entertaining) in action. We got to watch a calf be born onsite that morning, then learn how agriculture brings food to our tables through well designed,interactive exhibits and then enjoy some tasty food at the onsite cafe (great cheese curd fries and burgers). As a bonus, there was a fun corn maze to grab a beer or a canned brandy old fashioned and get lost in. Our family had a good time. We spent about 4 hours there so well worth the admission price for the fun memories we had. Is it for everyone, maybe not but it is probably a good idea to learn about where your food comes from and how it impacts your community. Have fun and learn something useful. Win/win right there.

It is so lovely on the property, and in the adorable building that houses the apples and other goodies for sale. The ladies that man the register are really friendly and relaxed. They are happy to answer your questions - and believe me, there are lots once you start finding apples you've never seen before! They even gave me a tiny apple to sample and it was so juicy and flavorful that I walked back home to get my wallet and bought a bunch of them for a couple of friends that were hosting me for dinner. The orchard gave me an apple pie filling recipe to include, too, which was so fun. I've been back several times. Somehow apples at the supermarket will never be the same.

I had never even heard of Manitowoc, Wisconsin but I'd definitely heard of Keith Haring and Rahr West had a special exhibit of his original subway art. I'd seen Keith Haring art in person before but not original salvaged chalk drawings on what were blank advertising panels and I was totally geeked about it. They had a really extensive selection and it was awesome seeing it weathered and showing other layers of stuff stuck to parts of it, ads and whatnot as well as other graffiti on multiple panels. One had a little kid chalk drawing in addition to Keith's. Really wonderful stuff to see in pers and I didn't have to go to NYC or pay NYC prices to do so. This museum is donation based with $5 suggested for adults. The special exhibit does take up the better part of the space, wrapping around a central gallery and there's a smaller gallery off to one side. It had an awesome piece of folk art and a couple good landscapes but there wasn't a whole lot extraordinary in the permanent collection. They do have a little piece of a Sputnik salvaged from the streets of this city and a cool sculpture outside. Downstairs there's student art studios and some funky murals. They have a recreation of Starry Night made with bottle caps that covers a whole wall. That made quite an impression on me. There wasn't also a chalkboard with some examples of Keith Haring art next to it encouraging you to make your own Keith Haring style art, or not Keith Haring style if you wanna be an iconoclast. There's not enough in the permanent collection here for me to recommend going out of your way to visit but if they have an incredible special exhibit like Keith Haring and you find yourself in Wisconsin this is a fantastic little museum.

I'm far more accustomed to the rural drive-in movies with great furrows with hills to angle your car on, but this has a distinctive charm. Cars are free to park wherever they would like, though I'd recommend taller vehicles park farther from the screen for the sake of us smaller sedans. Inside the building, there are bathrooms and some arcade games. There's a concessions counter, but I brought my own snacks, so no need to look too closely. I did see posters for pizza! The "doors" opened at 6:30pm when the movie started closer to 9pm. We were the first in the pot when we showed up at 6:40pm, so we took a drive around the charming town to return closer to 7:30pm. Maybe half a dozen cars in the lot. There was even a puppy in the bed of the pick-up that parked next to us! The location: 40ish miles outside Green Bay 75ish miles outside Milwaukee 100ish miles outside Madison For those willing to make the drive out of the city, this drive-in is delightful. Located in a small town in Calumet County. The service: Quick and efficient! Pretty laid-back! The price: $6 for a double feature? Is there really a better deal than that? I was delighted. For this unique experience, we got our money's worth and more. Next time: I hope they show a classic flick, there's something delicious about 80s and older films at the drive-in.
