When I first moved my dad into Calabasas, I loved it. The people were nice, there were always people playing ping pong and music. But a couple weeks in ALL of the staff changed. I think they got new management and everything went downhill. Every week I would come visit my dad would be dirty, have feces on his hands and feet, he'd be unshaven, his nails would be overgrown, and he'd be wearing no shoes and clothes that weren't his. Normally I'd just clean him up myself and redress him because when I tried to get help itd take at least 30minutes to find anyone to help. And they weren't very gentle or calming to him. Watching them change and clean him reminded me of terrible farming practices. The response time for major issues was also awful. My dad had terrible reactions to the drugs they insisted he needed and even developed SCABIES. We showed staff the rash and swelling repeatedly but it took months for them to address it, and even then they'd try and downplay it. Finally they told us they were giving us 30 days to find him a new place. They said he was too difficult cuz he was strong and young. Yes he was strong and young but he is the sweetest, kindest and most gentle guy out there. They wanted more docile patients that they could wheel in and out of ridiculous activities with like bingo or cooking or word games that no patients were capable of. Stay away from this place. It's run by heartless people just looking to make a profit and do the least amount of work possible. I liked a few of the nurses and staff but I bet they got paid minimally while administrators that did nothing made the big bucks. It makes me sick to think of how many families have to resort to putting their loved ones in places like this. I wish I had the ability to bring my dad home and care for him full time, but after 10 years of the disease and myself without the means to continue home care, the best I can hope for is a new institution with kind and qualified people that will not ignore my father. read more

I downloaded yelp just for this and I wouldn't normally leave negative reviews, but I need to share my grandfather's experience at Silverado. He had moderately-progressed dementia as well as other health conditions. He had been living in his home with a daytime caregiver but got injured over night, so we decided to find a 24 hour care facility. Silverado had many glowing reviews and was recommended by our doctor, so that's where we sent him. His physical condition got drastically worse after being at Silverado. He would constantly fall and get injured, which demonstrated that the staff wasn't adequately helping him to not fall. Whenever we visited, the staff clearly were not paying attention to him and every time he seemed to have some new bruise, injury, or even a skin condition. To combat the falling issue, he was just put in a wheel chair which was not necessary, as he could walk, just with assistance, which they were unable to provide. They called us to let us know that he had a cold and assured us it was not covid (without taking a test), but a week later they told us that him and a few other residents had covid. While he had covid, they didn't make much of an effort to keep him well fed or hydrated which is essential to recovering, especially as he was elderly and immunocompromised. And since they didn't even test him for covid until a week into the illness, there wasn't even any medicines he could have been given. He passed away about week after they informed us of the covid, and we have somewhat attributed to the insufficient care he received at Silverado. All in all, I want to bring attention to the fact that Silverado seems to be understaffed, but the staff there are generally negligent of the residents, needs. However, I would like to point out that we had very good experience with one staff member, we didn't learn his name but he was short with short dark hair; he was very kind and attentive to my grandfather. read more

There are places that keep your loved ones alive, and then there are places that allow them to live. This place falls in the second option. I can go on and on but this is yelp and we like our info short and sweet. Pro's: - Memory Care. This place wrote the book on how to work with Alzheimer's and ALL other dementias. - Huge outdoor area. Sitting spots, walking areas, and even a pool?! Screams SoCal everywhere you look. - Staff. Not sure what I like more, the fact that they're all trained in dementia care or that they're just awesome humans. Con's: - No options for JUST assisted living. This place works ONLY with memory care. This is a HUGE bonus for those looking for dementia care, but it doesn't allow much option for the regular Joe looking to stay in a community. - Location. It is off the beaten path. It makes for a quiet, serene spot for those living there but not the easiest location to get to. - Animals. If mom/dad don't like animals then this may not be the place for them. They've got dogs, cats, parrots, chickens, and so much more. The staff do a great job keeping the place spotless, but be aware that you MUST be an animal lover to stay here. Assisted Living falls in the "Care Company" genre. Too much "care" kills the company, too much "company" kills the care. These guys have perfected the balance. read more

I absolutely do not like to write negative reviews. Many times I never take the opportunity to do so. But this was about my elderly dad who had onset of dementia. They talked about how great this facility is but the truth is the 13 days my dad was there before I took him out of there he developed a horrible rash on his bottom due to the lack of attention he got. He would tell me how he needed help to use the restroom and everyone kept walking by him saying I'll be right back and they never came back. My dad would sit in his excrements longer than he should have. The very severe rash he got on his butt was a true indicator how he was neglected. I took care of my dad for days and days and he never fell. My dad would try and get up and use the bathroom by himself and he would fall. They would try and help him up and he would fall. My dad fell every day. I've visited him every day. They made it very difficult for me to visit him saying they were booked up but every time I got there either early or stay late I never saw one soul around that place. My dad had new cuts and bruises daily!!! One of the helpers told me they were short staffed and when I address this with administration they quickly snapped back and said no that is not true. All I have to say is if you have a loved one who is still continent capable and can dress themselves maybe this place is OK for them. But for someone who is in continent and has peripheral neuropathy of the hands and needs to be helped with everything from A-to-Z this is not the place for them. I took him out of there and asked him for his entire chart and they gave me everything except for the two important pieces of paper I needed to enroll him in a new elderly care facility. I was so furious that they neglected purposefully to give me all the paperwork to swiftly enroll him in a new elderly care facility. That shows you their behavior in more ways than one. I took my dad to a hotel and we stayed there for four days and luckily I was able to nurture his bottom rash so he could get checked into a new facility. One of their employees even lied about me at one point when the new facility called to get information. I feel strongly that Silverado needs to hire all new administration!!!!! I'm so sorry but this was my experience and I can only speak from my experience and it was not good!!!!!! read more

This is my first yelp posting because I felt it important to get the word out. I brought my father Stan to Silverado Memory Care in Calabasas about a year ago. At the time, the Administrator was a lovely young gal named Miki Lamm, who promised that my father, who suffers from Alzheimer's Disease would be cared for in a community where their well trained staff would show love and respect for the "person that once was." She was right, and interim Director Vida has continued where Miki left off. When I visit, my father is always dressed appropriately, washed, shaved, fed (the food is good) and medicated properly. Every employee that I have interacted with has done a good job. It takes very special people to work in this area of the health field. They are put into difficult situations a great deal of the time, and I say "bravo" to them. They are heroes. Sharon Friedman does a terrific job of interacting with the families, and I've had delightful conversations with her; the nursing staff (Jennon, Jennifer, Daisy and others) is marvelous; the caretakers (too many to recognize, but big shoutout to Geo) have been excellent under the most trying of circumstances, and the front desk staff are always nice and friendly. Staff changes are inevitable in this field, and there's been some turnover, but I think that Silverado-Calabasas might rank as one of the memory care facilities with the least amount of turnover. It's probably because of their intense screening process when hiring new staff members. In summary, I would say that families must realize that Silverado is not a hotel, though it sits on beautiful grounds in the mountains of Calabasas. It is a place where those seriously afflicted with dementia are given an environment that is as safe as possible, while still allowing for the maximum degree of independence as possible. Placing someone that you love is very difficult for any family to do. After taking the tour and meeting people and seeing what Silverado has to offer made our decision that much easier. We had come from another facility and wished hat we had placed my father-n-law here from the very beginning. The loving care that Silverado gave my father-n-law was unbelievable. They took such great care of him. He was always clean, his clothes were clean, and his room was clean. The food was delicious! What was incredible was if family was there visiting you could sit and eat with your loved one! They made you feel like family! The activities that they have available for the residents are just amazing. Music, baking, movies, and chair yoga are just a few that they have. Silverado had a Family BBQ day with many activities as well. A fun day for all! If you have a loved one that is in need of Memory Care then look no further! Silverado Calabasas Memory Care is simply the best. You will be at ease knowing that your loved one is being taken care of with the utmost respect that they deserve with these diseases. As hard as it is to leave them after a visit, you will have peace of mind knowing that they will be cared for the best way possible! The level of care is just through the roof! You also meet other family members that know exactly what you and your family are going through and understand one another. There is comfort to know that others are going through the same daily obstacles with their loved one too. You also become close to the staff at Silverado. They become part of your family. It is hard not to become close with the staff as they are such loving and caring people that you can find. We still remain very close to some of the staff at Silverado to this very day! They are our family! Sadly on Oct 11, 2013 my father-n-law passed away unexpectedly in his sleep. TL:DR: the place is fantastic, if your loved one has gotten to that point, take them there. My father spent his last almost 4 years at Silverado Calabasas. It's been 7 months now since he passed, and only now am I able to start to write a review of the place. I will no doubt revise as thoughts occur. So much depends on the current staff, and there is a high turnover, but always some absolutely amazing people. If your loved one has gotten to that point, hopefully you've gotten to this point: it's not about you and what you would like, where you would like to be, it's about what they need right now in their journey. It's not about them being over-controlled for the sake of "safety," it's about them living as well as they can with what they've got left, which means taking risks and living life as fully as their minds and bodies still allow. _You_ need to be an extremely compassionate person to understand what that is, and that entails seeing from their point of view, not yours. The "cruise ship on land" kind of places are selling to the family, not the resident. Look past that. That's not what your loved one needs. They need a place where everybody around truly grasps what Alzheimers means and how to work with it. Silverado was that place for my dad. Even when he didn't recognize us any more, had no reason to not tell the truth, no ability even at pretense, when you asked him how he was he said, "I'm doing great," and he meant it. Silverado Calabasas gives senior living homes bad names! I should've done my research before bringing my mother to this place. The first thing that comes up when you search this place is ABUSE! I'm not even sure if this place is licensed!! It is evident that no experience is needed in order to obtain a job in this facility. I am glad that we got my mother out because they were not taking care of her, she would've been better off being on her own than at Silverado. My mother was never kept cleaned. There was numerous occasions where my mother has feces all over her, which puzzled me because she didn't even wear diapers. In addition, there were numerous days were I would visit her continuous days and she was wearing the same clothes. I believe that my breaking point was when the staff was more concerned about gossiping rather than taking care of my mother. This place really needs to reevaluate the people that are in charge because there is a lot of gossip and it always found a way to get to us. All I wanted my mother to be taken care of. I remember addressing this to Sonia Chambers and she was unmannerly; told me that if I had a problem to contact corporate. So then I went to Mikki, the lady in charge of the facility and she didn't have any answers to my questions however she did tell me that if I wasn't happy with Sonia Chambers to complain to corporate. She went ahead and gave me all of her information and this just showed me that if they didn't take care of their employees how are they going to take care of the residents. read more

My wife needed a place that would care for her and understand about her dementia. They have done a good job at trying to fit her into their community. They have nice staff, reasonable food, and a lot of activities. It has been a good place for my daughter to visit - they have games, a putting green, ping-pong, and a pool table, which makes quite a challenge for a 10 year old. It has had a bad history, and has made efforts to ensure that their staff take care of the residents well. It is easy to walk around, and worth touring if you're thinking of a place for your family member with dementia. read more

If you ever have a love one don't send them to Silvedado in Calabasas, My sister who has dementia was their for two months and lost 7 pounds because the food was so bad she could not eat it. Got a staff infection in her leg because it was not treated everyday, Was suppose to get thyroid medication everyday sometime she got it sometime she didn't. The reason I know because she went to the Doctor every month and had a blood work up and he found her thyroid was very very low. Their is 1 caretaker for 8 people. Reposting because at first it was due to privacy concerns and now it has been removed because not enough information has been given. I brought my mother here a couple of months ago. I came to visit if not one but twice a week. I have been in this facility long enough to know that the "caretakers" do not care about their job. My mother came into this facility with no pressure ulcer. Every time I came to visit I noticed more and more redness on her bottom. I asked how often she was turned and staff told me every 2 hours. When I asked my mom she said staff maybe turned her once if she was lucky. My mom also told me that when she had a soiled diaper she had to wait hours before she was changed. In addition: First, they do not hire qualified staff. Some of the CNAs are not even certified and have never had experience in taking care of elderly patients. A certain LVN is extremely rude and unprofessional. I do not know where she was trained or got her education, but from the care I have seen her deliver it is definitely not to standard or protocol. From what I know, at least one RN must be present to supervise LVNs like her, but I did not see one present. I find it upsetting that the combination of these staff members are the ones in charge of taking care of sick, elderly patients. Please, please do your research before sending your loved ones to an assisted living home and avoid ending up with a place like this. read more

I placed my cousin at Silverado last October after she was diagnosed two years ago with a form of dementia called Frontal-Temporal Dementia, a particularly cruel form of memory impairment that, unlike Alzheimer's, targets a much younger population with symptoms that are behavioral, physical, and neurological. I am making the effort to post my experiences here with Silverado to counter some of the recent negative reviews which I believe were posted by former disgruntled employees who seek to do unjust damage to Silverado's reputation. The task of caring for those with severe memory impairment is monumental. Silverado executes their program with unyielding love and attention to the safety and well-being of every one of the residents, one that consistently rises to the highest level of professional industry standards. The management has continuously impressed me with their ongoing effort to improve upon their services. This is not an easy task. Watching the decline of someone you love with dementia is absolutely heartbreaking. If it wasn't for these kind and courageous caregivers at Silverado the task of practically caring for people like my cousin would be not only heartbreaking but impossibly disruptive to my personal well-being and those of my family. In short, I am deeply indebted to the nurses, caregivers and management at Silverado for assuming the burden and responsibility of caring for my cousin with such love, kindness, and professionalism. I honestly don't know what I would've done had they not stepped up to the plate. They are smart, committed and compassionate and deserve the highest level of praise for doing the good work that so few would otherwise choose to dedicate their lives to. They are a breed apart. This community has faced challenges that were dealt with accordingly and created the research and training that helped to educate current and new staff. The actions of those accused and committed should not reflect the entire image of such a great community that caters to the residents and supports the family. The use of pre hire exams to hire associates that can emotionally and physically perform their duties to work with those inflicted by Alzheimer's and other memory impairment is now enforced. We love the staff and management at Silverado. They are wonderful to work with, and they treat us very well. We are there weekly and are very impressed with the resident care. Everyone who lives here is well cared for. Since Andrea and Mike have joined the Silverado Team, the level and quality of care has been markedly improved. There is no Assisted Living Community devoted to Dementia Care at this level, it is an extremely difficult job and they are very good at it. read more

Silverado has been a Godsend for our family. Early this year, I had to make the very difficult decision to place my husband in a memory care facility and I have total peace about him living here. The level of care that he receives is fantastic and the staff are dedicated to doing all that they can to make our lives better. The nurses, caregivers, ambassadors, activity staff, laundry staff, maintance staff, cooking staff...everyone... takes time to make him feel special and see that his needs are met. I am grateful for them all and appreciate how hard they work and for their patience and kindness during difficult situations. If you love your family member DO NOT PUT THEM HERE!!!!! Although there are a few nice workers, my family members have been neglected and looked over way too many times. Their job is to care for these people but instead they abuse them and look over things that need immediate care. Older members continue to come up with "mysterious" bruises and are constantly dirty, unshaven, and wearing clothes that don't fit them right. This place should be shut down. I wish I could afford a better place, but when you have to send a loved one to a home you hope that they will be treated with love and patience and of course the correct medical care. This community is open and spacious and they really want their patients to thrive, not be isolated or confined to a wing. Silverado Care has been wonderful, caring and compassionate for my wife. the facilities are very beautiful, clean and well maintained. what is very helpful is that it is all inclusive; administrators, doctors, nurses and caregivers all under one roof. i brought my wife from a small care facility that didn't offer these services. the staff is very supportive and makes it very comfortable for me to work with them. i am there every day and we have a great team that provides comfort and care to my wife. our personal physician says Silverado is the finest care provider he has seen in all his years practicing medicine. he says my wife has thrived since she became a resident of Silverado. my children and grandchildren enjoy visiting as well. there are swing sets and an assortment of pets for the kids and residents. the entire community makes it condusive for the entire family to thrive given the terrible disease my wife is dealing with. Alzheimers is a very difficult and tragic disease for both the person and their family. Silverado helps in every way to enable my family cope with this. i would recommend that you consider Silverado for your loved one. read more

if I could give this 0 stars I would. This place is nothing but BAD! The smell, the way things are ran, they have this room call the "back spa" nothing but horrible thing. Doesn't even scream spa once you walk into there. They use this "back spa" to shower all residents using the SAME shower chair for all residents for those you cannot help assist with a shower. Left feces were all over in the shower before my my dad's shower. Caregiver said to not worry that she'll just "Spray it down with the shower head. haven't they heard of SANITATION?! Many of the residents here are not even cared for. Caregivers do not know how to show care and compassion towards the residents here. They come in, clock in do what they have to do and get out once there shift is over. Not once have I seen any compassion towards a resident with a caregiver. "Nurses" think they know what they are doing and know whats "best" for these residents. Jennifer the nurse is very rude to some of the residents. She would scream in the middle of the dining room if the resident would not corporate while trying to take in there meds. This place has had so many horrible things happen, I am surprised it is not yet shut down. Trust me when I say this, DO NOT BRING YOUR LOVED ONE HERE. They will get neglected and caregivers will not care. Don't even bother talking to Jennifer. She'll simply agree then go back on your words once you walk out that door. The senior management here is as good as it gets, and I have to tell you, they have their work cut out for them. They are dealing with Alzheimers and high levels of dementia exclusively, and it is very, very difficult. Their floor nurses are also top notch and always know what is going on. Not a well run establishment. The grounds are great, caregivers dedicated, but poor communication between departments.

There are lovely caregivers at this facility. But I witnessed many problems of neglect endemic to the management of a place like this. I have visited other facilities and this one may be better than some, but I would not recommend it to your loved one. Caregivers are over- worked and often carry a load which is not according to contract. If you have no choice but to send your loved one there, be sure to visit on a day unannounced and during the weekday to see how things are run. I feel a little sorry writing this as I grew very fond of some people while my mother was there, but I am thinking of future residents and I do this in support of them. My wife started living at Silverado at the end of February 2017. She suffers from a very challenging form of Dementia known as Frontal Temporal Dementia. She was diagnosed nearly 10 years ago and her disease has really progressed. I think another reviewer for Silverado did a much better job than I ever could in explaining the ravages of frontal lobe dementia, especially its cruelty in afflicting younger patients. My wife was only 51 when diagnosed. We've been at Silverado for 3 months now and I can say I'm very pleased with the compassion of the caregivers, nursing staff, and all the personnel charged with cleaning and administering the facility. They are really focused on the particular set of issues affecting my wife and are thus in good position to anticipate things ahead of time. Putting my wife into care was easily the most wrenching and difficult correct decision I have ever made, but Silverado is doing a very fine job in caring for her. I feel fortunate that the facility is only 12 miles away from my home so that I can easily visit everyday. All the folks at Silverado care deeply about the patients and their quality of life. My father was a very active 83 year old with Alzheimer's disease. We were told by Silverado mgmt that they would be able to keep him busy. They didn't. Dad would not sit an make puzzles or watch TV so he was miserable. We had meetings, made suggestions and offered to help, but nothing changed. Silverado made us promises and told us things that they didn't follow through with. They were very slow at returning messages. The ratio of staff to residents is 1 to 7 in the morning; 1 to 9 in afternoon and 1 to 18 at night. The caregivers that interacted with my dad were fantastic. They seemed like they really cared, but were just too busy to be able to say anything more than a hello. The activities people tried but they too were just spread too thin. Since my dad wouldn't sit and play their typical games, he was left alone. He wanted to get out and move around. The pool, a putting green, animals, and pool table are just a few of the things there that aren't used. If your loved one will sit quietly then Silverado is a great place but if your loved one is at all active, you need to find a better place. read more
