I wish I could give Meadowbrook Senior Living more than 5 stars…read more My sister and I brought our mom here for the last few months of her life, and we could not be more grateful for the love and care she received. From the executive staff to the med techs to the caregivers, every single person treated her as if she were their own family member. The facility itself is warm and welcoming, and even the residents showed such kindness to our mom and to us. It gave us such peace of mind to know she was surrounded by compassion, respect, and genuine care. Although we wish she could have stayed longer, she did pass away -- but we will always be thankful for the time we had at Meadowbrook. They made an incredibly difficult chapter of our lives so much more comforting, and we will never forget it. Thank you, Meadowbrook, for everything.

The staff from day 1 were accommodating, friendly and seemed genuine about making sure he was feeling taken care of. The facility is very clean, the rooms are nicely up-kept and I hear the daily food offerings are quite good. Over the weekend, one of the med-techs pointed out an ailment that was of concern and helped us with getting care in place for him within a matter of hours. My wife and I are very fortunate to have found this place for Dad.

I was…read moreterrified of him becoming just "part of a business plan" and nervous about giving up control. I knew I needed to move from being a caretaker back to being his daughter, but I constantly wondered: Could I find a place that would care for him like I would? The answer is a resounding YES at The Ridge in Westlake. It is a true hidden gem. After researching every option and watching this facility being built, I was initially hesitant about choosing a newer place. That changed the moment I met the "heart" of the operation. Ivette (Memory Care Director): Ivette is incredible. Her expertise and accessibility are unmatched. She truly listens, keeps me posted, and I genuinely feel she keeps a personal eye on my dad. She is a kind soul who ensures his quality of life is excellent. Ian (Health Services Director): A true med-tech extraordinaire. Juggling medications is a massive task, and Ian is a pro who stays on top of every detail behind the scenes. Tonya (Activity Coordinator): I call her the "Cruise Director." She has the utmost patience and creativity, engaging residents at all different levels with physical activity and brain games. Her kindness radiates, and the weekly excursions are a wonderful touch. The Care Staff: I wish I could name them all in this post. This is a hard job, and they are amazing. I feel so lucky knowing they love my dad and made it a priority to get to know him. It didn't take long for them to figure out he loves to sleep in, needs his paper in the morning, and is always down for anything with chocolate! I pop in all the time and can always count on them. If you are reading this, you're likely navigating a difficult chapter that nobody prepares you for. You will doubt yourself, and the transition is hard. But the peace of mind here is real. The best testament I can give is a text my dad sent me the other night: "They are making me hot chocolate with marshmallows. I love this place! " The Ridge is secure, safe, and fun. When I leave my dad, I don't worry--and that is worth every penny. Yes, they are still working some things out as a newer facility, but don't let that push you away. Everyone has to start somewhere, and this is an opportunity you shouldn't overlook. Come visit--my dad would be the first to tell you how happy he is to call this place home.

The place seems more like a nice hotel than an elder care center, with beautiful grounds, winding paths, and even bunnies! This was the second place she was in memory care, and there is no comparison. The staff here is so caring and professional. They keep in regular touch with the residents' families, and spend a tremendous amount of time on enrichment activities with each resident. The food is excellent, and was served in a restaurant-like environment before the pandemic. Now it is catered to each room They also hosted a private birthday lunch in one of their small dining rooms for our family and my mother-in-law. Since the pandemic they have done a marvelous job of keeping residents safe. Most of the staff and management have been here a long time, and it's easy to see why.

My five stars go to Sunrise's executive director, Edith Kennedy, and the nursing and admin staff…read more They are exceptional, and I don't use that word a lot. Edith is particularly outstanding because she truly cares and is on her game with details, always wanting feedback (good or bad) to make your loved one's experience the best it can be. Now, with assisted living facilities this can sometimes be like moving a mountain. But, she earnestly tries. She's got your back. However, despite this, we are actually moving my dad to another local facility shortly due to one of Sunrise's bad qualities, horrible in fact, and that is...pricing. Again, to be found at many assisted living facilities but costs at Sunrise are higher than most...and they price differently than most. For example, when you first talk to them they speak of the rent as a flat rate. But it's not. Sunrise charges you a day rate per month. So your cost varies per month based on days of the month. The rent is better in February, September, April, June and November. But the other seven months with 31 days...all higher. And surprise...there are more months with 31 days in a year so the house wins. It's a bad optic. Despite the costs, they serve generic soda vs. Coke and Pepsi brands. Small yes, but at these prices...bad optic. They only have transportation offered 2 days a week while most other places provide 7 days. Again, for what they charge...bad optic. And one other thing. No matter what month you move in, your rent will be increased come January by 5-10%. The contract makes it sound like it's a random event, but it happens every year like clockwork and you will be notified 60 days in advance. And remember, you have your highest leverage to negotiate (the move-in fee, etc.) before you sign the contract. So with Sunrise, the people are terrific. The prices are not. And in the end, it's a shame that a business that exists to provide care often comes across as caring more about the money.

Belmont is a great option if your family member is fairly healthy but just needs things like meals…read moreor basic cleaning managed. They have a large dining area (they can also deliver meals for $10 per delivery) and host a ton of outings and activities. The residents who can tend to the majority of their own needs seem very happy and enjoy the community and their friends. They even welcome pets for added comfort and the feel of home. They can schedule transportation to and from doctors visits and appointments. Many of the staff are wonderful. During the day, the team that manages the front desk are exceptional (Cristina especially!!!) They are kind and friendly. The teams truly care about the residents and it shows. Now here comes the HOWEVER and what earned the lower star rating: If you have a person who needs more care and cannot care for themselves, please think hard about Belmont and ask harder questions. Ask about PAL turnover and average tenure. It will be PAL availability that most impacts a resident. Our experience was wait over an hour to be assisted to the toilet, especially around meal times when PALS tend to be stretched thin transporting residents to and from meals. Ask to speak with the people who will directly interact with the resident from from desk to circle of care to overnight teams. The woman who works overnight at the front desk still brings tears to my mother's eyes. When I would call myself she would say things like "your mother calls all the time so she needs to understand nobody is coming right now. She needs to stop calling." When we complained about this person we were told that she "didn't mean it that way." I can only hope when the overnight receptionist is older, she never calls someone begging for help and have the person on the other end of the phone say that nobody is coming. Ask about the technology and ask to see the reports and the process documentation. Ask about hospital transport procedures. Ask WHEN a resident is taken, ask what information the health team will share when contacted by doctors. Get it in writing what information WILL be shared with doctors and ER teams to best treat your loved one. Ask for detailed care accounting. Get a clear understanding of how MUCH time the teams are having to spend with the resident to deliver the care you pay for. Also ask about their response time protocols. Ask about the consequences for not meeting that agreed upon timeline. Ask about scheduling minimums and how many PALS are on each floor for every shift. They DO always have the legally required staff count on duty at all times. That is NOT the same as having ENOUGH staff. Ask about bad reviews, notices around investigations or citations listed on California's Community Care Licensing Division that includes 5 years of certifications, inspections and infractions online. If any facility or individual is stonewalling or NOT answering issues head on..take that as a flag. Not saying this is the case here. In fact, I always found Nancy, Belmont's director, to be straight forward, honest and understanding. Nonetheless...look up the history of inspections and ASK if you see something that concerns you. Honestly, Belmont would have been ideal for us if we didn't need significant care. In the end this was a bad fit with significant questions around what we were sold and the reality of their capabilities and procedures. In the end we moved, and now receive 4x the care at a third of the cost with a smaller care facility that is less about the window dressing, activities and outings and more about availability of care. It was really easy to focus on the surface things because we wanted to picture mom happy. If you or your relative is truly independent and just needs a bit of help, I'd actually HIGHLY recommend Belmont. But if your elder resident needs care or serious assistance...ask the hardest questions and look WAY beyond the fresh flowers.
