I've just moved here and as an avid cook I wanted to befriend a good local butcher…read more Well, these guys didn't disappoint. From having a 5 min healthy discussion on preferences of wing-tip sirloin and ribs of beef I was given a sneeky peep round the back. These guys provide the beef for the best steak places in Glasgow. I'd eaten at one of them earlier in the week and my eyes were bulging at the trays of chateaubriands and rib in sirloins. So, as you'd expect, their meat is very well sourced and as good as you're going to get anywhere. I took a1kg 1rib Angus and pan roasted it in butter and wilted rosemary to get a good sear, then a quick 15 mins in the oven. I had it sat on some roasted beetroot puree with a port, wine and fresh beef stock reduction and the beef was some of the best I've ever eaten. Superb quality and ageing. Week after I wanted a lamb rump as I had the hunger for some dauphinoise. They were happy just to prep some up straight away, no fuss. The lamb was delicious........as was the dauph ;) ........and the sausages. Get the Italian fennel ones and slow cook cook them in your tomato sauce for pasta. Very, very impressive. Prices are as you'd expect for meat of this quality. Look on the window for weekly £10 deals. Steak and chicken. Well worth it.

First to review? What is going on, Glasgow Yelpers?…read more This JOINT rests unassumingly on Byres Road and claims to be purveyors of fine meats. They are indeed. Walk by often enough, but was compelled to go in today noticing the £10 offer which includes 2 sirloin steaks, 2 pork loins, 4 steak lorne sausages and 4 pork sausages. And if that doesn't make you want to go as well, you're either a vegetarian, or just plain ole crazy (yes, those are different). Nice decor, welcoming, with a good layout and professional staff. Excellent selection of all sorts, including lamb burgers that are absolutely getting destroyed next visit. Delighted with my purchase today and will return. Enough said.

I've bought an amazing lamb rack, steaks, sausages and short ribs from here. All of which have been outstanding. Firstly, the sausages. Crombie's are famous for them! And they are delicious. Well worth the trip just to stock up on sausages. Everything else, the quality of the meet has been great. I've recently purchased a sous vide machine so anything that can be slow cooked for hours is going from Crombie's butcher straight into my machine for hours on end. One thing, it's expensive compared to what you'd get from the grocery stores. I've found the quality to be way better but be warned- it might put a dent in your wallet. Great selection of marinades, ready to cook pies and other savoury pastries, and service is always friendly and helpful.

If you mention this place to any self respecting Edinburgh carnivore, they should acknowledge you with a contented sigh ("ahhhh, Crombie's") and a wistful look in their eye. Their sausages are widely regarded as amongst the best in the UK and they supply lots of local restaurants with them to keep the punters happy. There are many different varieties to choose from and they range from the traditional (pork, chipolatas, Scotch beef) to the exotic (boar, pork and stilton is an inspired and tasty combination). Asides from sausages, they do the usual butcher cuts of meat (steaks, lamb etc) and meals for you to heat at home if you can't be bothered cooking. Most of the meat is locally sourced and everything is incredibly good quality. It's just a shame that they close at 5.30pm, far too early for those of us with office jobs.

Oooooh, overall it's been such a brilliant summer in Scotland! Really though, as dreich as it can…read moreget sometimes in these thar parts, there's always a way to get round the weather and still make of it a fantastic day out. (Who can help it in one of the most beautiful countries in the world?!) One way is to invent the most perfect and ingenious awning-pseudo-tent-sort-of-kind-of-canopy that allows for BBQs despite any season, any weather, any temperature...able to counter even the infamous horizontal Scottish raindrops :) They say necessity is the mother of all invention, and when the going gets wet, the wet get going. Or something like that :) ANOTHER WAY to guarantee a good time for both grillmaster and guests is to make sure you've a splendid assortment of things to roast and grill, sear and broil. One place we've firmly established as our definite go-to for all things venison is Inverlochlarig. If you are a fan of high quality wild venison, this ought to be the place for you too. The other half is a firm believer in the imperative importance of supporting local establishments and purchasing locally sourced items, and especially if they are in the business of making excellent, high quality goods. He sees this as a vital and critical aspect of maintaining Scotland's great traditions of sustainability, and I can't more heartily agree! We came upon Inverlochlarig several months ago by mere (fortunate!) chance, having taken a random road to explore more of Loch Voil. That led to a small sign at the end of the road, which led to two simultaneous curious glances, which led to big grins and a mutually understood agreement to continue on the undeveloped road. At the bend in the road, it was decided that we'd part ways so that the mister could go off a little further down the road and explore whatever else there was to discover, while I would see if anyone was at home. The matriarch and patriarch of the farm were just finishing up their lunch on the sunny veranda and despite not wanting to disturb them, I was quickly and warmly beckoned in. Eventually I was led to a giant freezer containing recently packaged and frozen cuts prepared for walk-ins, just like me. Prices are more than fair, and there is such comfort and joy in knowing that they are right amidst the beautiful highland Perthshire country in which the indigenous red deer freely roam. We're not vegetarians, but neither are we blind omnivores. We have recently taken a vow that when we do eat meat, we will be conscientious and scrupulous of its source and origin. I just can't say enough about how much of an incredibly positive impact this has had on our health and overall well-being, in so very many ways. And when all is said and done, it hasn't at all been at any greater financial expense. If you are unable to make the trek to the farm (which is situated in yet another beautiful part of the lower highlands, in the Breadalbane area of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park - worth a visit!!!), they also have next day nationwide delivery. Please do go check 'em oot!!!
