I'm so pleased with their sweets! I first stumbled upon Simply Sweet at The Pillars' Marry Me event. I sampled a cupcake, I liked it, met Danielle, and took her card. Fast forward, I now see the range of their sweet options and I'm a whole fan! What's more, their work with very neat (super important to me) and I can report that everything I've ever tasted from Simply Sweet is spot on, and trust me, I know my sweets and have the dental bills to prove it. Macarons-- with perfect feet. CHECK. Mousse-- creamy and delish! Fudge-- yum. (Hubs tested this as he's the resident chocolate lover, and it passed with flying colors!) Cake pops-- I don't do cake pops (a texture thing for me), but I took a bite of a red velvet one just to see what they're working with. I didn't finish it, but the flavor was legit and I raised a brow. If I liked cake pops, I'd do it again. Cupcakes-- favorite of all, were perfect per usual. This time the cupcakes had a fondant logo on top, and get this, I like the flavor of their fondant. It's marshmallow-y and not waxy, just the way I like it. Very poor business practice. I ordered a cake to be picked up today, "by 5 PM". My husband arrived after 4 PM and there is a sign on the door that says, "due to unforeseen circumstances, we are closed today and tomorrow". The building was dark, no one answered the door and so I called and no one answered the phone. I left a voicemail. Then at 4:50 a young lady called and said the cake was ready to pick up. I explained that we'd already been there and no one answered the door. In a PANIC, my husband bought a cake at Flour Girls. We felt lucky that they had an extra cake! Back to SS, I asked for the owner's phone number and of course, the girl couldn't give it to me so I went on Facebook to leave a message. The owner, Danielle Behr, started an argument with me. It did not go well. They won't give me my money back and it's too late to pick up the cake. I wouldn't trust this business with a cake or cupcake order. This is a little shop just a few minutes from my house. They've been open, I think, for a couple of years. After my first chocolate cupcake, I'm surprised. Maybe my expectations were too high. Not sure. I just know that when you pay (relatively) a lot of money for a cupcake, it should be an experience, not just something you shovel in your gaping maw to satisfy your hunger. I got 2 chocolate on chocolate cupcakes, because I had a Buy-one, get one free coupon. Even at half off, these are over-priced. In fact, they were so plain and ordinary, I'd say you'd be better off getting a Hostess Cupcake, you know the ones that have the white squiggly line with more preservatives than a bottle of salt? What was really disappointing was that when I shared my disappointment, they could not have been less concerned. I did get an apology, but when I told them the sponge was tough, they never thought that it might have been past it's shelf life. They just don't care, at least the two workers that were there didn't care. I can't recommend anyone buy cupcakes from this place. A shame, too. They're so close to my house, and I pass them when I go to work. Specifically, if you're reading this far, my complaints are that the sponge wasn't light, it wasn't fluffy. It was dense, and it didn't taste like chocolate, not even a little bit. When I peeled the cupcake liner off, a quarter inch of the cake stuck to the liner, so I know something was off, I've never seen that happen before. The frosting was just lard. At least, that's what it tasted like. No sugar, it wasn't even sweet. And it didn't taste like chocolate. It was just brown lard. I think someone goofed on this batch! I'm a fan of small business - that's why I went back to them first, before I gave this review, and they took no action. Maybe they didn't have the authority. Either way, a darn shame. Ordered a birthday cake from here last Friday (1/24). Specifically asked for "wedding cake" style. The cake was denser than a pound cake and looked undercooked or like the ingredients were mixed wrong. The icing was very tasty and they did a nice job decorating but the quality of the cake was terrible. This is the second time we have ordered a birthday cake from Simply Sweet. The first time was in November and it too was terrible. Both times we contacted and spoke with the owner/manager who was no help and had no empathy. In November she blamed us for ordering the cake wrong. When my girlfriend spoke with the owner Danielle today regarding the latest cake she was not apologetic and did not offer a refund, only a credit for half the cake or some cupcakes from their shop. Not only does this shop have terrible cakes their customser service is even worse. In summary, save your money go somewhere that has better cakes.
