This cemetery holds so much history and it was a very interesting place to visit. It is a beautiful location and was so peaceful. We walked around and looked at the headstones thinking of what the lives of those buried there must have been like. Some of the headstones were very ornate and grand. There is no parking but you can pull in and there is a dirt road that goes around the grounds. There are some places to pull off to the side. Anyone coming in was very courteous and made way for other cars coming in or leaving. read more

Very old 1776 old cementary that has original deteriorating tombstones that are hard to read. A few monument signs and a log cabin. Good little history stop in town. read more

Established in 1773 for members of the nearby Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church, the original log church is located at the entrance. You'll also find a dispenser with maps that point out some of the highlights of the cemetery and a path for a guided tour. A bit uneven in some places, but still a lot to see and take in as you view the 200 years of history that have happened to bring people here. Several politicians including congressmen, at least one Virginia governor (David Campbell) and John Buchanan Floyd (Confederate Major General). The ivy-covered burial mound is unusual. It holds the remains of John Henry Martin, though briefly held General John Hunt Morgan, a Confederate raider who was renowned for burning railroad trestles and hampering the efforts of Union forces. General Morgan was taken from here to Richmond and later to Lexington Kentucky. Across the road, you'll find the African American Cemetery that houses the remains of slaves owned by original settlers and developers of Abingdon There is limited parking but on a Sunday morning I was able to park at a nearby shop that was closed and no one seemed to mind for an hour.
