I have been taking my dog Goose to SMS starting in Portland in 2021 and now to this location since June of 2023. First, on the program as a whole. I was very apprehensive about an e-collar at first, but it has been exactly the tool we needed. Goose was a rescue and was very aggressive and reactive toward other dogs and no amount of treats or praise would detract her from that. This training has made walks so much more enjoyable for both of us, given her much more freedom, and strengthened our relationship. She gets excited when I bring her collar out, knowing that she is going to work and get to do something fun and engaging whether that be around the house or out and about. Second, this location. The transition to transfer over was seamless and the trainers have been extraordinarily helpful. The free group classes for life are so valuable and help Goose keep up on her training. She has gone from not being able to be a block away from a dog without barking and lunging to practicing off leash in a room full of 10+ dogs. Nicole and Ed both manage to keep a room full of often reactive/ anxious dogs under control and create an environment where everyone can practice and work on their skills regardless of what level that may be at. I have personally watched other owners and dogs join group class after the training program and go from being no more than 6 feet from other dogs to integrated into the class within a matter of weeks. We came in for a consultation last Thursday for our 1 y.o pure bred GSD, Holley. We met with Ed Graves- he's fantastic! He confirmed our suspicions Holley is an anxious and nervous dog but very smart. During the consultation he worked with her briefly in their arena with his own dog, Pepper. Ed explained to us a couple years prior he struggled with Pepper in terms of training but after working with her personally, she's like a brand new dog! We have a 2 year old Aussie. We ADORE her. She is fiery, spirited and sweet- but she used to be a downright terror! She would bark at other dogs, pull relentlessly on her harness on walks, chase things, growl at people on walks, wouldn't come when I called her, jump on the counters and grab things and run away, would beg during meal times, would be in our guests faces, would start fights with our 15 year old Sheltie, and would just do anything to get attention... you get the picture! Then with our newborn son, he had even less freedom as we could not trust him near our son being so hyper all the time. I didn't think Keej could be trained anymore at this point. After adopting a 4 year old Mastiff whose personality fit perfectly with our family I began the arduous task of training a dog that had been neglected by his prior owner. After 3 months of owning Bowser we had made some progress but decided that some professional help was needed to speed things along. Training is a continuing process, so besides following the instructions at home, we are happy to keep returning to the facility as long as it takes to get Bowser to a level where we KNOW he will listen to our commands, not just hope as we were before starting the program. I just want to say that Sit Means Sit has changed our lives. Since getting my puppy Golden Retriever Tofu almost 3 years ago I have tried everything to try and get him to walk with a loose leash. I started with treats and then that didn't work after months and I went to the gentle leader. That didn't work, so I finally had to move the pinch collar just so Tofu wouldn't pull my back out. Fast forward 2.5 years of frustration, and we moved in with my parents while saving up for a down payment. They also had a 3 year old Australian Shepherd puppy named Cooper. The two males couldn't be in the same room together as they would fight viciously until they were broken up so we had to keep them separated at all times. Obviously this was a huge strain on our lives and very stressful. This is where Luke Kindall and Sit Means Sit dog training comes into the story. Sit Means Sit has empowered my dog's confidence and behavior and fundamentally changed how he interacts with the world in positive ways. I'd spent two years training via rewards based programs and while Milo did well, his fear index stayed high and he was overly protective of anything he felt was his from me, to the car, to the house. As a German Shepherd his behavior was frightening people. He was reactive to men, and really reactive on his leash to dogs he'd love to play with when he was off. I had a two week work engagement out of state and signed Milo up. He THRIVED in the program. He went from freaking out on strangers (he was mostly reactive to people) to sitting quietly in a "placed" position waiting until he is released to meet and greet. His confidence is at a level that he is not freaking out at every turn. He is self managing his reaction WAY better and is enjoying himself way more. For example, we go the big dog park/open space 6-7 days a week and prior to SMS he had NEVER willingly let a dog chase him. He'd put his tail between his legs, get stiff, and get really nervous and scared/uptight. Now, he has realized that dogs chasing him can be fun and he willingly engages in this behavior. It's so much fun to see him so happy. Many people speak negatively to the collar and I'm the first to say it's not my favorite; and I have seen it work wonders for two of my dogs over the past 14 years. What I am the first to say is that my dog is FAR more comfortable, safe, and happy with his life. When I picked him up he ran around wagging his tail at all his trainers as if to say...look mom, I made so many friends while you were gone. He LOVES the team at SMS and that is a wonderful sign to me. When we go to classes he enthusiastically runs and greets his friends (trainers) there, when he's released of course ha ha ha. His obedience is way up, even when his collar is off (which is most of the day as I work at home). Now instead of having a complete melt down fit when a package is delivered for example, he barks to alert me, and I can easily redirect him to lie on his bed. The best news is that complete strangers (WAG Walkers) can now come to my house and walk Milo. Our 3 year old shepherd mix was getting aggressive with other dogs. She would pull excessively on walks and take off after rabbits. After putting her through the 7 day boarding and training she has become an excellent companion. I witnessed a trainer from SMS yesterday at Red Rocks. The dog's tail was tucked and the body language was that of a tense and stressed dog. I was watching this trainer as he repeatedly shocked the dog. I saw the dog scrambling to try and figure out what he was supposed to do and clearly just wanted to stop the pain. The dog was whimpering and yelping. I'd never recommend anyone use this training company. There are MANY alternatives to train your dog that doesn't have to involve fear and pain. read more

Sit Means Sit has saved the life of my dogs in multiple occasions as they love to chase after wildlife. I'm able to easily and confidently stop them from running into the streets or other dangerous areas or after dangerous animals. I can walk them off leash with pride. I rarely use their leash because it's more stressful for me to try and untangle the leashes and deal with that mess. Sit Means Sit has allowed my dogs to be dogs. They can run free and smell anything I allow and I can let them because I know that I have no problem controlling them at a distance. As for the cost.... It's for the LIFE OF YOUR DOG... I found it fascinating that in all these reviews no one ever mentioned the cost other than to say it was 'pricey'. For all those out there, here is the breakdown. First, to participate in their training you must purchase a special collar/remote system that is $243 for each dog you are training with them. The board and train options for 1 week start around $1000 and go up respectively for the longer the sessions. This includes a comprehensive training package but no guarantees. It also comes with some follow up private lessons and then unlimited group lessons. Their second option is a group class with 3 private lessons for $695. They have a second dog discount on this package, but not on board and train. Frankly they seemed nice enough but not being upfront about pricing is a negative. The free demonstration was nothing more than a sales shpeal and then we looked at a price sheet. The guy didn't even bend down to pet our dog! They may have worked miracles for some, but just know the financial commitment your going to have to make to get there...all with no guarantees. read more

I have read all the reviews and really want anyone who is thinking about this Sit Means Sit training to hear what I have to say. I got an eight week old Chocolate Lab male this past July from a really great family. I met Bailey's Mom and Dad, they both had great dispositions and of course his other eight brother's and sister's. I knew I was getting a great guy that would be a breeze to train. I took Bailey to work with me every day. We were glued together. He knew his name, and how to sit and that was all. My past experience is with a Rottweiler and German Sheppard they were both well trained in Schutzhund obedience and protection that I learned in Germany by some very experienced trainers. That training did not work with Bailey at all. I could see that I was breaking his spirit and I did not want to do that. I joke about Bailey is the first born and a Taurus, he owned me he was unruly, bossy and wild. I knew about Sit Means Sit (Anthony, Bob and Jimmy) but thought it was like very one else out there, I promise you they are NOT. My thoughts on dogs are that they are a family member and an investment. Like anything thing else, I want a quality product. I feel I have the best dog, Vet, food, groomer and now I have the best trainer's. This company is nothing you have ever seen. They have every kind of dog you can think of from ten years old to seven months old and any breed you can think of. I went to see these guys in August Bailey just turned three months, we met with Bob and Bailey barked the whole time that we were talking. Bob was patient and understood what I was going through, by the following Saturday I had Anthony at my door ready to begin training. We did private training until they thought he was ready for class. He was ready at five months, which is young, but I started him training with these guys at three months. My investment is paying off I have no worries of him running in the street, jumping on people or barking for no reason, I have not raised my voice once with Bailey. This type training is not for every dog. My dog does not respond well to punish based training. This training turned my dog into a rebellious German Shepherd every time I picked up the remote. I witnessed one of the Sit Means Sit 'trainers' (I use the term VERY loosely) walking with a dog at an event this weekend. The dog had no idea what was going on and was walking around with its tail tucked in fear. The so-called 'trainer' was making sure to shock the dog frequently though neither the dog or anyone in the area had any idea why. Poor dog got the crap shocked out of him with no clue what he was supposed to be doing. Do yourself a favor and use one of the many qualified, positive reinforcement trainers around town instead of these jokers. If you want to build a positive relationship with your animal you don't need to shock them. read more

When I was 4 months pregnant, I had the greatest idea to add a dog to our growing family, thanks hormones! Not only did we get a dog, we rescued a 1.5 year old dog from the Denver animal shelter. Odin seemed great at first, he was not aggressive or vocal whatsoever and while he didn't seem to know any commands he also never eliminated in the house or seem to be scared of his new home. Boy were we wrong! The shelter didn't have any information on him other than he was picked up as a stray. When we got him he was very skinny, 45 lbs, and had large paws and head size so we thought he was still a growing pup. Well the day after we brought him home the husband and I left him in a crate and went off to work. I came home during lunch time to let him out and little did I know what I was about to encounter. Odin not only bent the wire crate and escaped, he went on to tear down all of our curtains, ripped up the carpet in front of the door and destroyed a few boxes we had in our back den. the destruction continued for a few more days, including another broken crate, a broken window, and more damage to the carpet. By the end of the week it looked like the Tasmanian devil whirled thru our small house and completely destroyed everything in its path. Long story short, we found out Odin had very severe isolation/separation anxiety. We put him on doggy Xanax and Prozac and consulted with several dog trainers before choosing sit means sit. The Xanax did nothing and the Prozac did not really seem to do anything other than dull his personality. We started training with Anthony and by the end of the second week Odin picked up several basic commands. As for his anxiety, it took several months of getting to know Odin and as he transitioned to be a part of our family, we also learned how to deal with his anxiety and mitigate it as much as possible. The collar system has been extremely effective and Odin continues to show us how smart he is. Now, nearly 9 months and one baby boy later, we can confidently leave the house without worrying if he is going to lose his mind while we are gone! It hasn't been easy and it's something that we work at every day but it works, and for us sit means sit was the only promising option we had, apart from surrendering him back to the shelter. We have been so happy with our results that we constantly show off Odins skills when we are with family and friends, and we have referred several friends over to Sit Means Sit. We are so elated and thankful to Sit Means Sit for the complete transformation of our 8 month old, formerly out of control, German Shepherd!!! Anthony came to our house for a free consultation and demonstration of multiple dogs being obedient and I was sold. We purchased the package where Izzy would actually live with the trainer, Dan, for 7 days and then individual and group training for the life of our pup. We had some serious issues with her nipping at the collar of our 2 year old Lab during fetch and it was ruining our Lab's good time and really stressing us out as well. We called her a CHUPACABRA on a leash because she would turn into this concrete clawing wild banshee, hair standing up on her neck and barking at anything that moved, a leaf, human or another animal. Dan did an absolutely amazing job with her in 7 days. She responds very well to the command Come and its almost comical how energetically she returns to us. It's almost like she is a different dog. We have only had her back for 5 days and we are able to give commands without the stimulation collar and she still responds well. The most unbelievable breakthrough is putting Izzy on "place", and playing fetch with our Lab while Izzy obeys and stays in the place position until we tell her to take a break. I completed the Sit Means Sit private lessons program with Anthony and couldn't be happier with the results. I have a Collie, which I bought because they are friendly, good with children, athletic, and smart. As our puppy grew, we went through traditional puppy class and intermediate class with good results, until he reached about a year old, and he developed some significant stranger anxiety. We couldn't even guess where this had come from since he has always been well socialized and never mistreated. Once I began seeing these fearful behaviors, I became worried that this would escalate to aggressiveness, and I started shopping for trainers to help me work with my dog. I even visited with Sit Means Sit, but initially decided to go a different route because of the cost, and my fear that the collar based training might make him even more anxious and fearful. I tried a private trainer with a traditional click/treat/reward/positive reinforcement based program, which just seemed to reinforce the fearfulness that I was seeing and despite my dedication to his training, his anxiety just seemed to be escalating. After the failed attempt at the prior training program, we decided to go back and try Sit Means Sit, and I am really happy that we did. Together with Anthony, we developed a plan to redirect my dog's nervous energy toward his obedience and learned behaviors, and almost immediately saw a decrease in his fearfulness and anxiety. He has continued to improve, and, while he is still not a social butterfly, I can say that I am confident that I will be able to keep my dog safe and under control while we continue to do all of the things that we love to do with him.
