I used NOVAworks back when I was unemployed after my contract ended; they're a government-funded…read moreorganization that basically exists to help the unemployed with their career, whether you're in the stage of resume-building or trying to advance your current skills. It's completely free, and they have opportunities that even fund some of your education should you qualify. To apply for their services, you need to have multiple forms of proof that you're unemployed. Once confirmed, you meet with an advisor before you get access to anything. My meeting was pretty cute; we talked about my experience, resume, and thoughts on my future career for an hour. I was given advice that seemed a bit outdated, to be honest, or at least not relevant or typical in my usual field. My advisor also repeated herself a few times and basically told me to cold call or message random people to market myself, which obviously is rather uncomfortable. Anyways, once you're done, you get access to attend various workshops or meetings held on Zoom or in-person (mostly at their Sunnyvale location). Based on the meetings I attended, a lot of people utilizing this service are older or have very niche skills, but everyone's backgrounds were quite diverse. In a lot of workshops, you will most likely have to participate or at least be encouraged to contribute. The types of workshops ranged from career exploration, resume and emotional help, networking, interviewing (task-based interviews), and pretty much most things related to the good ol' job search grind. I was able to find a job completely by myself (I was already in the interview process before I gained access to NOVAworks), but I think there's a benefit to their services and connection with other job hunters. If you sign up and go inactive, you eventually get banned from using their services for a long time, so I wouldn't sign up unless you have the motivation and time to actually use them. Their office in San Mateo was a little hard to find. They share a large parking lot with other random businesses and apartment complexes, and the building they are in is hidden behind trees. You have to find their organization name when you enter the ground floor, go up the elevator, and turn down a narrow hallway. It's a quiet and neat place, and really useful if you need to use a computer or printer.

I thought long and hard about whether I wanted to leave a review or what I might say in a review…read more So, just know that it is with a heavy heart that I feel compelled, despite my instinct, to get my story out there. I was offered a job earlier this year directly from the principal. I was uncertain about the role but was deeply inspired by its prospects. Sensing my uncertainty, the principal invited me to speak with her recruiter, David, at Palo Alto Staffing. I spoke with David for several hours across several phone meetings. By all accounts, things were going smoothly. That was until I got a call from the very principal who offered me the job telling me that she was uncertain about moving forward. When I asked why, she told me that David told her I would be a liability and that I was unqualified for the role. Now, keep in mind, at this juncture David had articulated to me on more than one occasion that "there was no doubt in his mind that I could do the job." So, you can imagine my surprise when I learned he articulated the exact opposite story to the company. Moreover, I asked David as candidly as I could whether he was supporting and endorsing me for the role, to which he responded, unequivocally, "yes." Adding insult to injury, David expressed to the principal that he administered a test to me and that I failed that test. That is wholly untrue. Instead, David asked me one question over the phone regarding concerns relating to booking travel, and -frankly- my answer was far more sophisticated than his own. Somehow, David felt emboldened to translate that unstructured and cursory dialogue into a "test," that apparently I failed. The principal then told me that David put himself up for the job! Let me say that one more time so it sinks in. David, the recruiter, in the same email in which he disparages my professionalism and undermines my qualifications, submits himself for the role. Nevermind the obvious conflict of interest here, but if allegations of professionalism were my shortcoming, I can think of nothing more unprofessional than to overtly and explicitly betray the trust of the principal by simultaneously minimizing a candidate and then offering your own services in lieu of the candidate. In my final discussion with David, he instructed me to send the principal an email highlighting my enthusiasm for the role, and we planned for him to follow-up on that thread with his endorsement and a plan on next steps. Again, you can imagine my surprise when I sent the email he directed me to send, and David never responded. Curious, I sent him a text message and reminded him that I had sent the email. Still, no response. Instead, David decides to contravene everything he told me on the phone. It is worth noting there was one other individual in the discussion process who was an outside service provider for the principal. I called that person to ask what her and David discussed following our conversations that so dramatically altered the outcome. She told me she was, by all accounts, enthusiastic about me coming aboard. I was, yet again, shocked to discover that David never actually coordinated with this stakeholder, as he claimed he would. In other words, it never occurred to David that before he comes to the conclusion that I would be a liability to the principal, to check in with the one other person in the interview process. If that was insufficient for a review, let me add a few more notes. David insulted the principal to me! He criticized the size of her SFO. In the interest of placating him, I echoed his concerns, but I found it wholly inappropriate that he was insulting my putative boss. It was conveyed to me by a person whose privacy I would like to maintain that David may have intentionally torpedoed my candidacy for this role because I was sourced directly from the principal, perhaps calling into question whether he would be compensated on the hire. I cannot say if this is true or not, but at this juncture, it would not surprise me. I view David as a feckless sycophant, eagerly attaching himself to large-net-worth individuals and siphoning whatever value he can. I have a law degree with a certificate in corporate law. I worked at two startups leading up to their IPO. I have worked on dozens of multimillion-dollar deals. I served as Volunteer Assistant District Attorney for the Resentencing Task Force under DA Chesa Boudin. I have litigated on behalf of immigrant families who were taken advantage of. I raised 15k for the Alzheimer's Association last month. I was the former Head of Legal and Compliance at Planned Parenthood Northern California. I hold degrees in philosophy, business and psychology. I am certified in PostgreSQL. In short, you can believe what I am saying.

Er, hello to you too? The more information I provided, the more hostile she became. Despite providing no context for her call, she was incredibly offended when I asked to know more about her company (which virtually has no online presence, is located in SF and has no relevance to me otherwise). I tried to defuse and explain that her messages were pretty vague, that I of course wanted to learn more, but she claimed she was intentionally being vague. Uh, so why would I want to talk to YOU? She had reached out saying she wanted "to discuss the details of this exciting opportunity!" So you're a stranger on the internet, with no credibility, presenting yourself on lies? Yet I'm kindly giving you my slammed time, which is why I didn't even see all your e-mails. Rude. She never did discuss any "details." I was astounded that she seemed to absorb nothing despite a lengthy, detailed and organic dissertation that clearly fit the role even before I found out what it was. Despite admitting she didn't have any exposure to this industry, she then claimed that I wasn't qualified for this fishy "multi-media platform" that "was just getting started" in LA and the reason her "friend" who "owned the company" was panicking asking for her help. I WONDER WHY. Drained AF, I reiterated my points and tried to wrap the call. She then seemed to hesitate at her hasty (highly confused) assumptions and asked me for my resume. Severely dismayed at this point, a surprised laugh escaped my mouth. What baffles me is 1) HER own admission of HER utter lack of grasp of the entertainment industry 2) the gall to tell an actual relevant professional her (self-confessed, unqualified) opinion 3) the fact that SHE reached out to ME because of MY experience 4) DIDN'T READ MY LINKEDIN despite contacting ME. ON LINKEDIN. NOR ONCE THINK TO REQUEST MY RESUME (are you sure you're a recruiter?!), but was angry that I didn't know who the hell SHE was?! (LOL) 5) never explained nor seemed to know the point of her own call herself, and 6) after crystal-clear, thoughtfully detailed answers (where she continuously cut me off before I could finish, really), then deciding, with her limited toxic 1990s operation and understanding, that whatever compelled her to message me repetitively was also magically defunct. Do you even know what a reference is? If your friend knows no one in LA and they're supposedly such accomplished C-level execs, are they so helpless and ignorant that they do not know to connect to relevant and QUALIFIED executives and agencies, HERE? Don't YOU? So.. not just one, but two unqualified individuals who are not only lost in the weeds, but completely resistant to locating the most common-sense answers sitting right in your hands.. deciding who is qualified. Uh, okay. The network of C-level assistants here is tight, and we and our bosses talk, you know. If your company is a start-up that's new to the LA+entertainment bubble, most competent assistants will not want to work for toxic AND incompetent people, ma'am. The big names might be abusive, but at LEAST there are solid connections and advancements to suffer for. You need us more than we need you - enjoy the oncoming years of high turnover, lmao. This 17-minute ordeal was ill-organized, unprofessional, unnecessarily aggressive, dehumanizing, toxic and overall, archaic as shit. Even the most reclusive person (me) living under a rock under a pond is inevitably exposed to and can easily understand the gist of basic current events. The bare minimum of professionalism requires knowing why they're calling, being civilized, respecting peoples' time, LISTENING and not openly projecting such personal flaws. Before stumbling on all these questionable 5-star reviews, I fully thought this was a scam. After hopping onto the rest of my meetings for the day, I couldn't help but marvel at how much.. a wild blip in the Twilight Zone, this whole encounter was, in such stark contrast. Granted, Hollywood is brimming with crazies at every level, but this was still so horrifying to me. I am amazed that professionals so out of touch and so lacking in self-awareness are allowed to exist - the exact opposite of the reviews written about her own employees on here. Note no distinctly good mentions of Jen and consistent patterns in the hidden(!) scathing reviews. Whatever world operates in such defeatist fashion, you deserve better. Save yourself.
