My previous review was a first impressions look at the food bank, and now that I have gone several times, I can say that I have some updated information on their treatment of those with disabilities. I have added one additional star bringing them to five stars in my book now that I have a good sense of how it works. Although it is not publicized, they do allow the people with disabilities to line up toward the front. You can sit in the cafeteria area and wait for the disabled line to start going through - there is no need to try and squeeze in with the rest of the people in the traditional line. On going through the line, often they will have someone to help you with your boxes or bags to a cart. Sometimes someone will be able to help you take your cart to your car. You can take a cart out to your car, and usually someone will be assigned to retrieve carts. Just start to take the cart back and someone should come and grab it from you so that you do not have to make the long walk to the food bank from the parking lot. As far as disabilities go, you still need to be able to walk from your car to the food bank, which is about a block and a half. If you can do that, they will help you as much as they can and let you go first in line. Please read my previous review to get a sense of the food bank itself for those who are new or thinking of going. This is an excellent food bank with really nice people and fast service. They often offer a lot of good produce that is in great shape in addition to their great normal selection of food and bread.

The volunteers are just the neatest bunch of people and they work hard to service clients with dignity, respect, and humor. The food bank has raised garden beds where they grow food and at times there are food service volunteers who help teach clients how to prepare nutritious meals from fresh vegetables and such.

Now is the time to stock up on potatoes! You can go once a month for a bag of food, twice a week for produce, and twice a week for bread and bakery. The bag of food they gave me contained three types of frozen meat, a Haggen's sandwich (not expired), and pizza among many other staples. I really appreciate these folks who really stepped in to help me and my wife in times of financial strain when we cannot buy food. So thank you Help House for being an angel in a time of need.

They provide SO MUCH of the food basics, they help keep families, the disabled/handicapped and seniors from malnutrition and hunger on a regular basis. Local produce is delivered daily. The people are friendly and familiarize themselves with the regulars. This place speaks to the character of the citizens of Oak Harbor in a VERY special way!

The grocery store system is perfect, offering choice to folks who don't have much nor get that kind of respect. Since then food banks, distro and community assistance has been a growing interest for me. I look to copy the standards and general set up of Stanwood Camano Foodbank at each place I volunteer for. Love the staff and volunteers! It was difficult to walk away from such a fine organization when I had to relocate. Kudos to the Thrift Store, too. Endless merchandise for all who are in need and probably the most organized of any I've been to. In some cities thrift stores gouge customers by misidentifying antiques that are simply regular items. No joke, there are a few down the street from me and it's pathetic. This one is reasonable and fair. I highly recommend volunteering for both the store and the food bank. If you do though, remember it's for the community not for you, and should not be looked at as a job but as an opportunity to serve. It's not a grocery store so wait times can be long. But food is expensive and some of us don't have a large budget and it's great. The volunteers are so helpful with assisting customers so it doesn't feel like you have to pay a lot for food to get great service and groceries. Kudos to everyone who donates or volunteers.

When you're unemployed, broke, and the food stamps have run out, this is the place to turn to. Bring a postmarked piece of mail to show you are a Bellingham resident, and it's best to bring a few empty grocery bags as well, because they tend to run out of boxes. Be prepared to wait in line an hour or more. They are open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 12:30-3:00 and Wednesday 5:00-7:00. Fridays towards the end of the month are always busiest. If you come earlier in the day, the line is longer, but the selection is better, too. Later, on towards 3 o'clock, the line is shorter, but the selection of food is less. Lots of grocery stores in Bellingham (Haggen, Trader Joe's, Price Chopper) donate their just-expired or just-about-to-expire bread, pastries and such to the Food Bank. A thousand praises on the volunteers and staff who keep this place running!

Clients( as they are known) line up outside and are invited in to be taken around by volunteers who lead them around to select items of their choice within certain parameters. The amount they get is based on numbers in their family. What I don't like is that this place gets fruits and vegetables that are not in very good condition - especially the greens and more delicate produce. The items here are donated by local stores. I don't believe the public's donations go to support this location. It is not a very nice facility so should be nicer when they move.

Big ticket items needed are soya sauce and honey. Donations not required are ANY kind of vitamin supplements as they cannot be distributed as the food bank does not have a pharmaceutical license. I didn't think I'd enjoy this Yelp event but I did! Really opened my eyes as to how easy volunteering here would be and I'm seriously considering it. Thanks again for a great event.
