Dr.Skay has been my eye doctor since I was a little girl and I've always received great care. It's easy to make an appointment and the front desk gets back you very fast, if glasses take a little longer to arrive they call to let you know. My experience has always been wonderful and my needs have always been met. They have a great variety of glasses on their wall ! Dr. Richard is an educated OD. Their facility is maintained and they provide services rather quickly. I was in and out of there in 30 minutes even after getting a new prescription. Where do I begin, I had eye exam few weeks ago. The Dr. asked if I have one and bring it to check it for comparison. Strangely my eye classes broke in half right after he gave it to me after check it. By the way, I have been wearing this classes for 3 years and nothing wrong with it until he checked it. My eye classes has translational lenses and I requested to have the same, but the receptionist said they will charge $200 for it unless I get another pair for $100, accepted and she told me will call me for pick up next week. This week will be my 3rd week and called to check and she said "oh we have it" really? Told her I thought you supposed to call she said yes we did and read a wrong # which was very upsetting attitude. Anyway, went to get it. In middle of way realized the classes doesn't turn dark, and called her again and she tells me that I didn't request it without looking at my chart, and put me on hold then said" oh the lab probably forgot to put the translational lenses, I want to send it back" I was like are you serious? I won't put up with this unprofessional attitude and not even apologizing for messing up my phone and my eye classes. I will go and give the glasses and get my money to get the hell out. I use this place because it was recommended on my insurance list for VSP. Everyone avoid this place at all cost! The receptionist Jessica is the epitome of bad customer service and resting __ face. The doctor was inpatient with my son and I. He even had the gull to place a rubberband on my son's wrist and snap it! He told us it should be snapped every time he said "ummm." What kind of backwards sadistic junk is this.Luckily the exam lasted less then 5 minutes and we could both get the heck out of there. Dr. Skay tried to keep us to order glasses. I refused to order anything from this place. I called my insurance and was able to see another doctor after complaining about this place. Very friendly personable staff. They make you feel like they known you forever. Never a wait, in and out. Dr. Skay is excellent, it was my first time ever needing glasses, so I was amazed when my glasses came back how on point they were, and I could actually see for the first time in a long time. I felt I had high-definition vision. So, if you don't like spending a half a day at the doctor's office and your time is precious, you will not be disappointed. I met with Richard Skay for an annual eye exam and new glasses. Zero time was taken examining my eyes rather he was only concerned on figuring out if my existing prescription needed to be revised for the new glasses. Perhaps it was all the time he spent repeating himself several times is the reason he never got around to answering any of my questions. Next thing I know I am led out to the showcase of glasses, pushed off to one of the women to sell me glasses, and Skay slithers back to his tiny office. The women then quickly reviews my insurance, tells me that only the 'eye-exam' was covered by insurance and new glasses will cost about $300.00 on the low end, but if I wanted what Skay had recommended that would be closer to $500.00. I then requested to get a copy of my prescription which, after the annoyed look on her face turned into more of a squinted scowl she briskly scribbled down my prescription and after a few attempts stood up from her chair and returned to the front desk. What I am trying to illustrate is that this felt more like one of those gypsy used car lots down in Pacific Beach and Oceanside. No consultation was provided, no listening (except for perhaps his own voice) was conducted. Their goal is to simply get you in, sell you glasses and get you out. The only reason you should go to this office is if you were fired by a gypsy used car lot and wanted to parlay your sales acumen to selling glasses. read more

His staff was quiet and efficient. I received my first pair of glasses quickly and they fit great. I didn't do a 5 star review only because I felt that there was nothing over and beyond. I wish I would have read some of the other reviews here prior to going to this office for reading glasses. I went in for a simple eye exam and a pair of reading glasses. I had never had glasses before so this was all new to me and I was looking to the Doctor and staff to make the appropriate recommendations for me. I was told "we want you to be happy, we'll do what it takes to make that happen". Well, that is until they have your money. Before I knew it, I had been up sold to "progressive" lens even though I was told my distant vision was better than 20/20 and only needed glasses for near vision. When the glasses arrived, they were horrible, completely unusable to me, but I was told "go home and give them some time, it takes time to adjust", so I did, 2 weeks later the glasses were on my desk and I was using the $20 Wal-Mart "cheaters I had been using with great success for the previous year (this after spending $225 in co-pays for "progressives" and "non-glare coating". I went back and told them I couldn't use them, they were giving me headaches and creating a lot of distortion. They then informed me I am allowed one "re-do" after which any other changes will cost me (by the rude lady that works there). I told them I wanted reading glasses (single vision) which is what I originally came in to get but was pushed into progressives. She said they will make me one "re-do" but there is no refund for the progressive up charge "co-pay" that I had already payed ($125!). She tried to play it off as the insurance company doesn't allow refunds of the co-pay, but the co-pay is between the doctor and the patient, not the insurance company (it is intended to cover what the insurance doesn't). So I go back to get my reading glasses that I originally wanted and she reiterates that I will NOT be getting a refund for the $125 I paid for the progressives even though I didn't want them, wasn't exactly sure what they were and ended up returning them! So I said to her "So basically I have now paid $225 in co-pays for a pair of simple reading glasses that I could have went and bought at Wal-Mart for $25, she looked at me and said "Yes"... YES!!! Unbelievable. In addition, the glass case they gave me (supposedly brand new) has a huge scuff on the front and there was no offer whatsoever to even change it out so it doesn't look like one that was kicked through a parking lot. It is a shame, because on my first visit the doctor seemed nice, but the lady that works behind the desk is awful with customer service and all they seem to be interested in is getting your money and hanging on to it, don't buy their "we want you to be happy" line, it is total BS. Next time I need an eye exam, I can guarantee you I will find a different place to go. read more

I have been two him 3 times and once for my son and I am no longer going back because of how they treated me. the younger gal is newer and even her being new she treated me awful. If you want personal attention and service like you used to get in the good old days by a real doctor with an old school vibe I'd say this is the place. It's weird to pick an eye doctor from Yelp, but then, how else do you randomly choose one? I'd been just driving up to OC the last couple of years to see my eye doctor who knows my history but it turns out she'd moved to a new practice and the thought of filling out the transfer forms and such just didn't appeal to me. Plus I was over a year overdue on my eye appt and since I need contacts to function I had to buck up and go for it. Dr. Skay and his trusty sidekick Jessica (AKA front office wonderwoman) were awesome and I'm so happy I found them. The first day I pulled up and saw the location I'll admit I was a bit nervous but I'm really glad I didn't run. You almost feel like you step back into time, not because the equipment (which is all shiny and new) but because of the level of service and friendliness and genuine "hey, take care of your eyes" speeches and quizzes the doctor poses during the exams. He has a great gentle manner and a comforting sense of humor. I highly recommend going here, you'll feel like part of the family in no time. I went back a couple of other times for contact fitting checks and then to pick up my order and it felt like I was stopping in to a doctor I'd been going to for years. Be very careful. I called to see if they accepted my insurance in which they responded yes. They did, but it was some muted "discount" version of it. My daughter was already having the exam when I started asking cost questions. Turns out an exam would be $42, lens $40, frames would yield a $10 discount, and a 15% contact reprieve. My insurance is good, but turns out only at places that really accept it. Makes sense to me, but I felt it was ridiculous that they lured me in there as if they truly accepted the insurance. Out $42 for nothing. The only positive thing was that I didn't go berserk in there to stop the exam from finishing and refuse paying. Kids were around so I was able to exercise self discipline. So that means the meds and shrink are working....right? read more

Unfortunately I have to agree with some of the negative reviews given by other YELP'ers. Here's my experience: My company offers VSP eye insurance. With this insurance comes an yearly eye exam. Dr. Skay's office is the closest optometrist to where I live so given the location I thought I would give him a try. Booking the appointment was real easy, and the receptionist who answered the phone was extremely helpful. My initial impression of Dr. Skay was great! He was quick to fire off a few jokes and had me laughing at every one of them. The exam was no more than 10 minutes, and I felt extremely rushed. When he pulled the space googles (have no idea what the proper tools name is) away from my eyes, I had mentioned my vision was still blurred and wasn't convinced he had the right prescription for my eyes. I was assured he had the right prescription due to his "years of experience" and was asked to go to the waiting area to speak with another employee about eye wear options. Given the idea of me being able to see again, I was happy to choose frames and lenses, and the reception was extremely helpful and patient. ... Fast forward 2 weeks I received my new eye wear on a Friday. Once I tried them on I knew I had made a terrible mistake. With the glasses on my vision was better than without them, however I still couldn't read the signage in the neighboring parking. I had asked when the next open appointment was to see Dr. Skay. We scheduled an appointment for the following Monday and I agreed to wear the glasses throughout the weekend so "my eyes could adjust". My appointment was scheduled for 4:40PM that following Monday, so I showed up at 4:10PM hoping I would be able to be seen a little early, but not expecting a miracle. Upon my arrival I was told Dr. Skay was on vacation and would be returning on a flight that evening. At this point I was slightly annoyed, but agreed to take the first available appointment, which to my luck was 8:40AM the following morning (Tuesday). Tuesday morning I woke up to rain... Something we don't get much here in southern California. I was running a few minutes late due to the stop and go traffic and made it to Dr. Skay's office at 8:47 (7 minutes passed my appointment time). I was immediately told they couldn't see me and I needed to be rescheduled. The receptionist (a completely different woman than I have dealt with before) rudely explained my appointment was at 8:30 & not 8:40 and I was 20 minutes late. After leaving the office, again, without an additional eye exam and minor headaches when I wear the bogus prescription eye wear I called VSP and asked what they could do for me. To my surprise they were happy to refer me to another optometrist in the area and agreed to cover the additional exam. If I could leave a request on here for future patrons of this place it would be this... Do your research and read the reviews before choosing to come here. I have found a handful of other optometrists in the area with better reviews and would suggest checking them out. I can only hope that Dr. Skay and his staff read these reviews and invest in a few customer service classes. read more

Dr. Skay is a caring and concerned Doctor, testing all related arenas of my eyes. I came away with a respect for his technical and personable attitude throughout the examination. Where do I start. This office staff is horrible, rude, unprofessional and thieves. They just want to take your money. They lose things and don't replace them the accuse the customer of wrong when its really them. They lost my case for my glasses and I called for them to at least give me one since it was their fault for losing mine and they said no. So now I have to go spend my own money and buy something that they lost. They lady's working the front desk were super rude and so was the "manager". I've been a patient of Dr Skay since he took over the practice almost 40 years ago but I haven't been in for a checkup in about 8 years since my vision seems to have stabilized. I was glad to see that he hasn't changed a bit and he always provides a wonderful service. I've been using the Varilux lenses for years and the high index glass to keep the lenses from looking like they were made from coke bottles. He does a fantastic job of getting my prescription right the first time every time. I'd lost my backup pair of frames after moving twice so I had to pick out new frames and one of his assistants found the perfect pair within seconds. His staff worked with me to find a replacement pair of prescription sunglasses that I could drive with for a reasonable cost. Highly recommend Dr Skay especially if you have a hard to fit prescription. read more

Our family has been seeing Dr.Skay for over six years. I'm sad to say we will NO longer be going there anymore he has lost a family of six due to his new rude office employee!! I received a new pair of glasses , I only had for around two weeks which were obviously defective the arm no longer functioned. I went into the office to ask for help to see how i could get them fixed..... Eva took them from me looked at them and said : You SAT on your glasses.!!!! My reply : NO they're always in the case. Then she tells me to go somewhere else and have them fixed! There's nothing I can do for you. (Rudely !!! ) I asked to speak to the doctor and she told me he was on vacation. Maybe ...I disturbed her while she was eating at the Front desk . I was just a bother to her. My apologies Eva .....I interrupted you eating your pleasurable!! The doctor is very nice and seems to do good work however his support staff are less to be desired. I was okay with this place but our interaction just started off wrong. First I called the lady at the front desk and inquired about their services and how much they would cost with my insurance. They told me at most 40, I was thinking great, I'm going! So after my exam it turns out my insurance didn't cover something so my total was 85. I didn't make a big deal, I figured stuff happens and I paid and left. I then wanted to get some glasses but found a great deal somewhere else, I called in to get my prescription and I was told it could only be mailed or faxed, since I don't have a fax I opted for mail. 2 weeks later I called again and they assured it will be mailed. 2 weeks later I called back and spoke to the office manager. About two weeks later I get my prescription and it was only my glasses but I also wanted my contacts. So never mind that I get my glasses. Sometime later I need more contacts so I call to get my prescription faxed to my new doctors office and they said they can't because doctor is on vacation for a week. I'm like what? So I cannot get a prescription that should've been a mailed almost too months ago because I have to wait for the doctor to get back? And after I explain my frustration with this office she hangs up on me and doesn't take the fax number to get my prescription too. I call back and I end up driving there. I'm not a patient there any longer because of all this, it should not be this hard to be a paying customer to be brushed aside and be treated so unprofessionally. The staff needs training on customer service and to fix their faces because when they interact with the public your facial expressions tell a lot. Horrible experience. read more

I got LASIK, and also moved out of North County, so I haven't seen Dr. Skay in 5 years... So take this review as one from 5 years ago, I'm sure he's probably still providing great service. Dr. Skay is very thorough when he examines you and not only will he talk about the health of your eye, but you can talk to him about other general health issues, he understands that not all of us visit our doctor on a regular basis, so he can offer useful advice for other areas as part of your exam. I been going to Dr. Skay for about 7 years. Everything the above reviews (and most of the Yahoo reviews) say I agree with. In addition, I'd like to add that I've had glasses made by other doctors in the past and they have been OK, but nothing like the precise "fit" that Dr. Skay's prescriptions are. I swear, the guy is a wizzard at getting the prescription exactly correct for my eyes ... to the point where I almost feel like I'm not even wearing glasses. He is the best!
