You get up in the morning, get pampered with a big Scottish breakfast. I liked to take a walk around the driveway afterwards and I saw deer a few times. The pub is downstairs, but around the corner, so inn guests have a little space from the comings and goings. Speaking of the pub, they have 400 whiskeys on their list, and a number of flights. It's also nice to go curl up on the couch next to the wood stove on a cool evening with a good book in the hotel living room. There's a dog and a cat in residence who are pretty sure that they run the place who are very good company. Dinners are large portions, I was more comfortable with the appetizers, especially the Kintyre smoked mussels. What really touched my heart was I'm gluten free, and they went out of their way to get gluten free bread and crumpets for me. I did not expect it. That's the first time I've gotten to have bread before a meal outside my home. Usually, I sit there while I watch everyone else eat theirs. I'll never forget that. The rooms tend to be on the smaller side but the bathrooms are new and spotless & the water pressure is strong and stays hot. After a long day of sipping drams of whisky and shoveling fresh seafood down your pie hole, you be glad to discover that An Cuan has the most comfortable bed you'll encounter in all of Scotland. Pros: - Breakfast. WOW. Best breakfast I had on my entire trip. Seriously. Perfectly cooked bacon. - Super friendly and accommodating staff - Ultra-comfortable beds - CLEAN bathrooms and rooms - Very short walk to Bowmore distillery, the round church, 5 or 6 restaurants, a Co-op, several shops and a filling station. - The table in the entry way is full of maps and pamphlets featuring things to do on Islay plus the staff is quick to help you out if need be Cons: - Wifi is spotty at best but may very well be a common island occurrence - The rooms are small but it sort of adds to the cozy atmosphere - There are a couple dogs on-site. They're kept away from guests but you may hear an occasional bark. The staff is quick to shut that nonsense down though - to their credit Overall, this is an awesome B&B and I would highly recommend it. If I'm lucky enough to visit Islay again, this would be the only place I'd want to stay. The setting and staff are exactly what you want to encounter on a trip to Islay and the home cooked breakfast is a thing of beauty.

Our room was clean, comfortable, and well-appointed. It was quiet and cozy, and we slept wonderfully. We loved visiting Islay and only wish we had been able to stay longer. Additionally, Don is very attentive to dietary restrictions and needs. He went way above and beyond in accommodating our need for a gluten-free breakfast. So, if you have food restrictions or allergies, do not hesitate to stay here. Just let Don know, and he'll take of the rest. We hope to return to Islay, and we will certainly return to The Lodge.

We had the room in back that overlooks a cute back courtyard and has a very nice, modern bathroom. The little Port Ellen market is a few doors down and the two restaurants that were open for dinner when we visited were within easy walking distance. Just around the corner, you'll find the Three Distilleries path, a walk to Laphroig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg with beautiful ocean views. It's also easy to catch a public bus to other points on the island...and we did have time for a visit to Bowmore, which was well worth it. Some people try to make it to all 8 distilleries on the island, but we were happy to visit four. We didn't meet our host Don in person, but the woman who was assisting him with keys, etc was friendly and helpful, and even made a phone call for us to get a restaurant reservation. Carol's taxi got us to and from the airport with ease. Our time in Islay was the highlight of our Scotland trip for both of us....and only one is a whiskey drinker. This was the best bed & breakfast experience I've ever had and ruined me for the rest of my trip. Andrew and Allison were the ideal innkeepers. Warm and friendly and amazingly accomodating. And if you're a whiskey lover, Andrew has a vast knowledge of whiskies. If you're going to Islay, I hope you like whiskey. I was booked for a single room and wow. King size bed and a room almost as large as my first apartment. And the bathroom, just gorgeous. Just a slight warning, if you're a shower singer, sound travels. I enjoyed a morning serenade from a couple of the Swedish guests on our tour. It was a nice way to wake up but not everyone is as willing to explore others' musical talents. Each morning, they set us up for our day of whiskey drinking with a full English breakfast (delicious) and the offer of a dram of whiskey. I passed for the fresh squeezed orange juice because I'm a giant lightweight. Our last night there, for a small fee, they provided us with delicious house made sushi, oysters and seared scallops. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. As much as I loved the whiskey tour, I would come back to Islay just to stay at Bowmore House. It's worth every penny.
