A year ago I would have given this restaurant 5 stars: it has been one of our favourites for20+ years. However, after going there for lunch on Thursday I have downgraded it to three stars. The reasons for this are: The menus are presented on an A4 sheet of green paper, food on one side and wine on the other. Not the class of presentation we are used to here. The fish was the only menu item listed as GF; not every gluten intolerant person wants fish for lunch. We were specifically asked up front if we had any special dietary requirements but even so we were not told of any other GF alternatives. The home-made chorizo was slightly too dry and lacking in flavour. A sauce or relish was definitely required here. My wife had the pork belly. The waitress asked if she wanted it entrée or main size and said the main had 5 pieces of pork compared to 3 on the entrée. When the bill came we were staggered to see that to increase a $23 entrée to main was charged at an additional $28! I do not know how they can justify this. On the plus side the caramelised onion and Brie bruschetta was absolutely delicious and the bread roll was also very good, even though it was late in being served (we were beginning to think the butter dish was for decoration). Sorry Skillogalee, but you are no longer one of our 'must visit' establishments. read more

Finally made it here! A slight detour on the Riesling cycle trail but worth it! Set in a bush setting, even if you don't get a seat on the verandah this place is great. Everything we had was perfect. Great wine and food, end of story. read more

It is a beautiful day in Clare, the dust road tempts you to veer west and up the slopes to this winery. The food has been announced in every brochure. The restaurant staff are nice (not so much the tasting staff). Menu seems good (if pricy, 2 mains, 2 glasses fo wine, 1 entre = $90). However, food is far from good, the duck and fig salad sounded so fantastic yet turned out to be very sweet and the dressing drowned the duck flavours. The ploughman's platter was so uninspiring we wilted with the lettuce. The wines are ok and the cellar door is tiny and hard to enjoy a tasting. Meh, with the quality around Clare --- just keep driving up the road. read more

Yesterday wasn't our first visit to this winery & restaurant. We've been coming here a couple of times a year for many years. This was the 1st time I turned up @ their door with a bleeding hand though, after successfully jamming my finger well and truly into the rear door of our car. As quick as a flash, we were escorted to our table and promised 1st aid asap. Within no more than a couple of minutes a very friendly, calm and competent young woman appeared with dressings to tend my wounds. During our conversation, I mentioned that we were celebrating my partners 55 years. Once I had been patched up and with no further ado, a waitress appeared with 2 glasses in hand and a bottle of Skillogalee sparkling Riesling. Well what a perfect and lovely response :) Orders were taken promptly without pressure, and we settled into enjoying our lunch. For starters my partner enjoyed the orrechiette pasta of the day with tomatoes, olives and artichoke hearts, which was fresh & perfectly cooked. I went for the parfait, with liqueur poached cherries, & I savoured every mouthful. The toasted bread was crunchy & light and the the cherries were the perfect accompaniment to the chicken liver. We both ordered the wild barramundi, thank goodness. Served with warm beetroot, orange segments and fennel in a dill & lime sauce salad which was just as it sounds... A gorgeous cacophony in the mouth. The generous serving of crisp sweet potato shards Provided some additional crunch & sweetness. The fish was perfectly touched by the chef. If I had to fault the dish at all, I would have preferred a crunchy skin on the fish... As it was I gave mine to my partners who doesn't mind the oiliness of the un-crackled skin. In between we enjoyed some tastings at the cellar door, and the kitchen staff kept us promptly informed when our meals were ready. We topped the meal off with a good hot coffee. All this happened in a packed house, just as busy as they could hope for. Who could ask for better than this? read more
