You move to a table, and order many many dishes (because they are nice) - we had the Jerusalem artichokes, the pate, the jamon and fig, a gorgeously simple green salad, a roasted pig and the bark-wrapped trout, the sweets, the sticky wines... great portions and fantastic dishes (creamy pate with pickled cherries, the artichokes were finger licking good, the jamon and gorgeous figs.. ...enough, you get the point...). Staff were fantastic, and I only wish the wine selection was slightly better balanced. However, our host pointed us to a really really good Mataro. The SA restaurant to beat in 2016 is simply called Seed. Don't ever complain that Clare is too far. This is a pilgrimage that your palate deserves.

We came here for lunch as well - the lunch was tapas, and they were all delicious. Wine is available for a very reasonable $6 per glass, and the food was enough for all the members of the table (it was around $25 per head). While Mr Mick doesn't have the cozy, feel-good vibe of some of the other wineries, it makes up for it with sophistication :)

Rather than go for the standard pub gear which was also on offer, we opted for oysters kilpatrick, marinaded pork belly skewers, arancini balls and grilled mushrooms with sliched brioche. All the food was good, and while nothing was particularly outstanding, there was definitely nothing bad either. Staff were enthusiastic, helpful and made great recommendations. The reasons for this are: The menus are presented on an A4 sheet of green paper, food on one side and wine on the other. Not the class of presentation we are used to here. The fish was the only menu item listed as GF; not every gluten intolerant person wants fish for lunch. We were specifically asked up front if we had any special dietary requirements but even so we were not told of any other GF alternatives. The home-made chorizo was slightly too dry and lacking in flavour. A sauce or relish was definitely required here. My wife had the pork belly. The waitress asked if she wanted it entrée or main size and said the main had 5 pieces of pork compared to 3 on the entrée. When the bill came we were staggered to see that to increase a $23 entrée to main was charged at an additional $28! I do not know how they can justify this. On the plus side the caramelised onion and Brie bruschetta was absolutely delicious and the bread roll was also very good, even though it was late in being served (we were beginning to think the butter dish was for decoration). Sorry Skillogalee, but you are no longer one of our 'must visit' establishments.

On the Sunday afternoon I visited, the store was full of customers but the line moved steadily and staff made sure that everyone was served quickly and efficiently. I was promised by my travelling friends to eat "the best sausage rolls ever" and was a bit disappointed (better than a Villis but not as good as my local bakery) as there didn't seem to be enough meat compared to the thickness of the pastry. The pastry was also a bit ho-hum but the sausage roll was piping hot compared to the lukewarm-ness (is that a word? If not it should be!) that has become common in many a deli. As I was feeling a touch greedy I also had a chocolate doughnut with my sausage roll and iced coffee (FUIC of course), and found it to be delicious and the icing spot on. This little bakery is an icon of sorts and worth a stop if you don't want to eat at the roadhouses but its not quite as cracked up as everyone says. Also, they make you pay 20c for tomato sauce, which never ceases to amaze me. Granted they do it properly and squirt the sauce straight into the pie/sausage roll/pasty, but I hate paying extra for sauce.
