The Skokie Public Library was my 2nd home growing up, and now as an adult it holds a bigger place in my heart. When I was younger, I used to sit in the chairs and spend endless hours read through all the books after school. And throughout high school I would meet up with friends after school so we could work on projects and homework together. During my undergrad it was the hub for research. But since graduation I haven't had the opportunity to visit often. So this week, in lieu of National Library week, my colleague and I decided to co work at the library! There are so many changes and upgrades since I've last been here. The library is more spacious and they now have break out rooms for different age groups so they have their own area to be in. The children's section of the library had small tables and chairs along with interactive games for them to learn to read. While the teens sections has study rooms for groups to work on projects together. The center of the main level has all of the media, from audio books, movies, cds, and more. Upstairs are most of the adult books, and various large tables where folks can work, along with different rooms for coworking and activities. The openness of the library has a bookstore feel, where it's all bright lights, highlighting books by genre just as you would find at a Barnes and Noble. There is a cafe area for those who want to eat and utilize the vending machines, and a few outdoor spaces with tables and chairs if you wanted to sit outside. All in all, we got so much work done, and the staff was incredibly nice. When they gave us a heads up that a large group of middle school students were about to come in and areas where we'd find more quiet spaces. With recourses like computers for folks to use, access to printers, local resources and more, there's so much to offer and do at the library!

A mom-of-two's (a toddler and preschooler) straight-forward review - Pros: 1) The library is massive with books that cover lots of genres. We were very pleased to find a wide range of books emphasizing diversity. If your child loves to read, this will be the perfect place! 2) Space is very clean and the staff were very diligent in organizing the books. Cons: 1) There are several sections for young children to play, such as a table with magnetic building blocks, a table with a train set, a kitchen with two pizza ovens, a stove, etc. However, it looks like the play sets were incomplete. For instance, the stove did not have any toy foods or pots and pans. The pizza ovens only had one random slice of pizza. If you're here for play, it might be a bit of a challenge especially if there are a lot of young children.

Popped in the Skokie Library to do some coworking. This was my first time here and it was a treat to visit. I like how the space was presented with a bookstore feel. The collections weren't cluttered and overwhelming but seemed more carefully curated to catch your eye. I initially found some tables by the Teen section since their study rooms were all booked up. I was able to work for a little bit but then school was letting out so I moved upstairs to the second floor. There was plenty of seating to plop down with your laptop. It was also nice to see that there was a community puzzle for people to do while they were there. I was surprised to find out that there were actually three levels considering it didn't look like it from the front of the library. It's a very beautiful library and would be back again when I'm in the area.

It's a great place to meet up friends. Also the librarian are nice. Has so much books and dvd that you'll probably find what you want. And it's always clean and I never seen it dirty. Plus I came here when I was a little child.

There's also a quiet reading room on the main floor if you're interested in a more immersive reading experience separate from the cozy chairs and tables in the various aisles. The main star of the show is the children's area downstairs: it's the entire floor, and the librarians do an excellent job of putting out award-winning books, different themed collections, and maintaining the various game stations. Recently, my partner visited, and I asked him to surprise me with a new mystery read. The librarians at the front desk were really helpful in his search, and offered him a selection of nine suspense, thriller, and mystery books to choose from. They really knocked this request out of the park. The ease of self-checkout is also coupled with the vast interlibrary loan program. I'm able to request any book within the system of regional libraries, which makes it so easy to get any book I'm curious about. Great parking lot out back with some street parking out front.

It is a cool concept, as they put different stations up throughout the library that tell the story. It's too advanced for my toddler but their publicity for this made it sound like this isn't a one-time sort of event, so I'll look forward to a future interactive story. Whilst we were here we stopped by the children's section. It's located in the library's basement. They have areas for kids of different ages though of course kids can hang out in the different areas regardless of age. In the section for littles, there's a pipe that spans a portion of the room and kids can talk to one another through it, which was kinda cool and fun. MGPL has some good programmatic offerings, and I'd like to take them to my kiddo when we can make it. They recently had a magician in their auditorium, and I believe they have an evening story time as well. The only thing I am unsure about is the parking and its relationship to the doors. I parked in the back since all the street parking out front was taken, but it doesn't seem like there was any door from that back parking lot and I'm not sure I was super comfortable with that when it was so dark and we were ack there alone. The side entrance may be open during all hours, though, so that may be the option.

So happy to find it is still on their schedule! We've been a couple times now and will continue to go whenever we can. Most libraries have a story time in the morning, which is not something I can ever get to as a working parent. But family story time starts at 7, and I'm willing to let my kiddo go to bed a little later in order to attend this particular event. It's really well attended; there have been 5-8 kids there when we've gone. The librarians set it up with little rug tiles, individual ones for the kids to sit on. Most adorable of all the librarians have a variety of stuffed animals placed at each place for the kiddos to hug and play with during the story time. Great idea and great way to stick with the theme! This story time lasts around 30 minutes (though the first time we were there, Ms. Mary went 45-60 minutes) and includes stories and songs. I don't have a library card for this branch, so I haven't explored any of its books or other offerings. However, I believe that they offer passport appointments, which is a nice alternative to having to go to the post office to do it, though I'm not sure if they only do that for residents or not.

Throughout the years I've lived in Chicago I've never lived terribly far away so I've been by lots of times, but have never had an occasion to stop in. However, the Northwest Chicago Historical Society hosted a program here a few weeks ago called Distilled in Chicago. There's a community room up on the second floor where it was held and it was a very good space for it. Also up on that floor is a very large study room up there as well, and some tables in the open space as well. There's some artwork here through Percent for Art, part of the City of Chicago Chicago Public Art Program. They're mostly various pastoral or landscape images. I think it's really cool to stroll slowly through the community room and view the 15 or so photos they have of early Edgebrook, showing the original school, the train station, and so on. Pretty cool. The branch has a dedicated parking lot but there's also street parking along Devon and, if necessary, the neighborhood streets. The entrance facing Devon does not have a button to automatically open the doors for some reason so if you need that you'll enter through the parking lot. On the west side of the library there's a little garden area with several park benches as well.

Lincolnwood Library is on the smaller side but there several modern touches that make it stand out. Note: I'm a booknerd who is always in search of the perfect study room for when I tutor students (as my side passion project when I'm not working in corporate during the week). The Lincolnwood Library shares its network with fellow northern Illinois libraries so I was able to use my Skokie Library card there! This is convenient because the Lincolnwood Library is super clean and has a "one-stop shop" feel. It is only one floor so it has a certain ease of access. They have a variety of computers, a nice children's area and newer study rooms. I rented a room and did not have to go through the computer system like at the Skokie Library which I found super convenient. The reason why I dislike booking a room through Skokie is that you are only allowed a certain number of hours per study room. I always end up having to stack library cards from my friends and family to achieve the amount of hours I need to study in a private room. I understand the logic behind that policy but in practice it was just a lot of extra work and I felt bad that my friends had to help me with their cards. The Lincolnwood library has the nicest study rooms because each includes a table, chairs, and a huge flatscreen television. The room is made of glass which gives it a modern touch and you don't feel claustrophobic. The rooms are very clean and the chairs are very comfortable. The staff at Lincolnwood are very polite and warm. They are helpful and a few of them are really cool! They seem to have a great selection of books as well. Note: limited parking spaces and an overall smaller feel.

I never even visited this library when I lived in West Ridge, though this is the newly constructed iteration. Today we attended family story time hosted by the children's librarian. This branch is very modern and is a mixed use space. It looked like there was a green roof so I asked the security guard about what was upstairs and that's when I learned it's a shared space--the bottom floor is the library, and the upper floors are apartments. This branch is using windows to their greatest advantage, as most of the outer walls of the library are almost entirely glass. I think that's great since it makes it a bright welcoming space instead of dark and dank as some of the branches can be (and especially here, where the apartments overhang the library, it could make it dark). The huge mural (nearly floor to ceiling) just past the entryway was created by a Rogers Park native, and I love that they're keeping it local. In the center of the library there's an outdoor courtyard space with a few tables which is a lovely addition. When we were here for the children's program (August 2023) they had free COVID tests available for folks to take (one per person). They also have narcan available at this branch (though it was kind of hidden away, unfortunately, so here's me letting you know you can find it here). There's a family bathroom in the children's section, which I think is a great and smart idea, though you have to get buzzed into it by staff at the circulation desk (luckily the desk is right by the children's section). The parking lot is small, but ample.

When I was here I saw some advertisements for some really cool programs. Children, teens, adults can all find something interesting. There are in person programs as well as hybrid ones, and some of their book clubs meet both in person and virtually, which is pretty great. Interestingly, they don't seem to have a checkout desk--from what I can tell, it's all self checkout. There's a patron services desk when you enter, but that's more for help and information. To the right of patron services is a self checkout and there's also one in the children's services department. There's a large meeting room on the first floor, where various events are held. The children's services section is one we haven't fully explored but they have an all-gender toilet with baby changing station, as well as a calming room. The calming room requires access from one of the librarians. There is a portable baby changing station here (be sure to bring your diaper changing pad since it's fabric, and you know there's a baby who pottied as their diaper was being changed). There's also a sink, which is helpful. And there are some toys and materials that help children to be calm, breathe deep, sit and decompress. It's a great idea. Outside there's a little courtyard with a sculpture and they (sometimes, at least) have some Adirondack-style chairs out to kick back and relax. There's also an area that has some chess tables outside of the library. There doesn't seem to be dedicated parking for the library. Instead, you'll find parking on the street or in the public lot to the west of the library. It's public, free, three hour parking but it's shared with any businesses in the Uptown district. The Park Ridge Metra Station is also directly to the west of the library. In the outside as well as inside there's a sensor where you can wave your hand to hehe the door open, rather than one of the push-button ones. Although it's in general accessible, there are detectors when you enter the library so I'm not sure if someone with a wheelchair or other mobility device would be able to easily enter.
