They have also grown an amazing kids and adults isshinryu karate program that started in 2019, and their women's Jiu Jitsu team has grown exponentially as well - making it the biggest woman led, women's only Jiu Jitsu programs in New Jersey. It has turned into one of the most sought after places to train, with multiple members who travel more than 45 minutes to train there. I can't express into words how welcoming the community is to people of all walks of life, all experience levels - whether you are coming alone or with your entire family. The head instructor presents himself as some kind of modern stoic philosopher, but what I…read moreexperienced was less Marcus Aurelius and more bargain bin philosopher king running a sweaty little dictatorship in pajamas. Every opinion is delivered as absolute truth, humility appears to be something other people are supposed to practice, and disagreement is seemingly treated as evidence that you simply haven't reached his level of enlightenment. Even stranger was his apparent refusal to meaningfully acknowledge the gym's women's and children's programs. For someone supposedly leading an academy and building a "community," you would expect the women and kids training under the same roof to actually be treated like part of that community. Apparently leadership only extends to the portions of the academy he finds worthy of his attention. Which usually is people who have left his program and he clings onto for relativeness. (You can review his facebook and Instagram posts for clarity) Then there was the hygiene I personally witnessed the head instructor use the women's bathroom to take a huge waffle house shit and then walk directly onto the mats barefoot. this action was the justified by spraying his feet with lysol and combing his hands through his receding hairline. At a jiu-jitsu gym--where everyone is rolling around with their faces, hands, cuts, and bodies pressed against those mats--that is absolutely fucking disgusting. During my time there, many staph out breaks occurred and no one was properly protected or notified. The entire place felt like what happens when one man reads three stoicism quotes on Instagram, develops a messiah complex, and is subsequently given control of a martial arts academy. If you want good leadership, an inclusive academy culture, basic humility, and the comforting knowledge that the person teaching you isn't tracking bathroom floor bacteria onto the surface where you're about to put your face, I would train somewhere else. Marcus Aurelius preached virtue and sel--discipline. Jonathan Helwig apparently can't acknowledge his own kids' program or put shoes on before taking a shit.

Our younger daughter got involved and realized she too is strong and capable and the instructors have been great with her as well. I cannot recommend enough the Kids Night Out events - they entertain your kids for 3-4 hours while you get a break! Dragon's Den takes care of your children like they are their own. They are competitive but they are so family friendly - something other martial arts establishments lack.
