Since my last review Pure Mixed Martial Arts has grown so much. It's a new and bigger facility. They now have Taekwondo classes for adults and kids! More jujitsu classes to include a expert level. Cardio kickboxing and an amazing striking program. My 8 daughter trains kids jujitsu there and loves it. It's the only sport that she has stayed with and loves going to class. The instructors are amazing and I have no idea how they get my kid to listen so well. Proud to say my wife is a member of the Main Chicks Jujitsu Team, the largest women's jujitsu team in the Northeast. Over 30 strong and still growing. Just attended an amazing seminar there by Ryan Hall, this season's winner of The Ultimate Fighter. I'm always seeing the areas top jujitsu black belts and professional MMA fighters coming in to train with Andy and Mike Main. The group of people that I have the privilege of training with are the best I could ask for, we all want to see each other improve. Andy, Mike, and all the instructors there have proven to me time and time again that truly care about my development as a martial artist. I feel completely comfortable knowing that I can walk up to any person there to help me. Doesn't matter if I want to practice, drill, or just have a knowledge question. The people that have been training longer will alway take the time to answer my questions or help me find the answer if they are unsure. I started training here just for fun. It has definitely been fun and so so much more. It has become something that my wife, daughter, and I have in common and can bond over. A great stress reliever and confidence booster. The people at pure have become our friends and going there is so much more then just training. read more

It's been 10 years since I wrote my last review, so I think we are due for an update. The Pure facility has more than tripled in size since 2015, and has turned into one of the largest, most state of the art MMA facilities in NJ. They have also grown an amazing kids and adults isshinryu karate program that started in 2019, and their women's Jiu Jitsu team has grown exponentially as well - making it the biggest woman led, women's only Jiu Jitsu programs in New Jersey. It has turned into one of the most sought after places to train, with multiple members who travel more than 45 minutes to train there. I can't express into words how welcoming the community is to people of all walks of life, all experience levels - whether you are coming alone or with your entire family. There's so much I can write about Pure MMA. The staff, the owners, the classes, the other students... they are honestly ALL amazing. Coming in to Jiu Jitsu with an extensive background in Tae kwon do I thought would be an extreme challenge... but here I am! Learning and loving every second of it thanks to everyone there supporting me and helping me be better on, as well as off, the mats! I never thought I'd find such an amazing facility where you legitimately feel like part of a family. My son and I have trained at a number of MMA gyms in the area and finally settled on Pure even though it is a 40 min. drive for us. It is huge with multiple classes in multiple rooms. The instruction is outstanding from kids to adults to pro fighters. Something for everyone 7 days a week. Highly recommended. The Main Brothers are exceptional to say the least. I have trained Karate (Since 1990), Boxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Since April 2012). There are so many different experiences I have had learning to defend myself. First is the Martial Art itself. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has been by far, the most rewarding and realistic experience that I have had in terms of self-defense. You know where you stand without question every class. Within each martial art are different schools and instructors. I have experienced everything from complete rigidity and cult-like expectations to the pure, conscious environment that the Main Brothers provide. It really is a place that you can come to train without experiencing ego. Both Andy and Mike are very skilled in the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, MMA and also have a way to make all students feel comfortable and confident. It is so rare to find a gem like Pure MMA. Here there are no expectations to blindly follow or to follow some political code like I have seen before. The Main Brothers give their 100% to every student that walks in that door. I have never witnessed them putting anyone down or seeming frustrated to have to repeat anything. This is BY FAR the most positive martial arts environment that I've been in. These guys really embrace the essence of true martial artists without being distracted by phony self-serving antics or practices that just get in the way of true development. There is so much to be said about the wisdom, encouragement and awareness of the instructors but you have to experience it to know exactly what I'm talking about. These guys are top notch. Their instruction and attention to detail is unbelievable. My abilities have exploded because of their instruction. I was stuck at a plateau but they helped me blast right through it. They do a great job of teaching the fundamentals but also incorporating technical and detailed instruction of more complex techniques that other schools usually hold back from teaching students. I strongly recommend anyone that is looking to train martial arts to train at Pure MMA! You won't regret it!! Every time I train is a blast and everyone there has a great time!! The atmosphere at PMMA is community-oriented and very welcoming from the time you get into the door, on the mats, and when you leave. People in class are very helpful, patient with beginners but also supportive while learning and building strength together. I really feel at home on the mat. I came to pure mma as a blue belt. But thats getting way ahead of myself because I first met mike main at AMA as a fresh wet behind the ears white belt. At the time Mikey was an instructor for the late Wednesday night nogi class. After attending a few of his nogi classes I noticed immediately how much he loved jiu jitsu by the way he taught. He walked around during drills with the same attention a parent has with their own children. Well placed words for adjustment with technique or encouragement were common place with this kid. I say kid because he wasn't old enough at the time to buy a beer yet, but had the maturity that some people spend an entire lifetime searching for. After receiving my blue belt from renzo Gracie black belt Jaime Cruz, I was unable to train jitsu for a full year due to unforseen circumstances. During that time mike main was not only winning championships in grappling at the highest level but was also opening a jiu jitsu school with is brother Andy who was also incredibly accomplished. When I first met Andy Main I had no idea who he was. His demeanor was that of Clark Kent only less nerdy and more articulate, but his ability on the mat was more like the DC superhero. When I was able to train again I knew where I wanted to go. As a brand new blue belt I had no idea what it meant yet. As a white belt, I wanted my blue belt so bad that when I finally got it I had no idea what to do with it. But training at Pure MMA gave my blue belt meaning and purpose. Like everything else in life, its important to enjoy the ride while you are on it. The way classes are structured at Pure, it allows every single student to enjoy the ride. People who have a passion for what they do will always find tremendous success doing it. Mike and Andy are progressive instructors with immense attention for detail and truly love what they do. Pure MMA is a great place to train and learn kids jiu jitsu. We came from another gym specifically to learn from the instructor there, Mike Main. Mike is a technical instructor and does a great job breaking down moves and explaining them well. You can tell that Mike genuinely cares about helping his students improve. I have been training in the martial arts since 1984, and Pure Mixed Martial Arts is by far the best place at which I have ever trained. The Main Brothers have created a wonderful environment in which to train. From the moment you walk through the door, they make you feel like one of the family. The school's mixture of a relaxed, friendly training environment and fight- and tournament-proven technical excellence is hard to beat. Both Andy and Mike are extremely accomplished martial artists so you know what they're teaching you is solid. However, it's their friendly, open, and relaxed approach to the fighting arts they so clearly love that makes it such a pleasure to train with them. You never feel pressured to do something you're not comfortable doing, and there's no hard sell. The Main brothers aren't teaching because they want to get rich; they're teaching because they love the martial arts and want to pass on what they've learned. I have been training at Pure Mixed Martial Arts for approximately 1 and 1/2 years. While I have trained briefly with several martial arts schools in the past, hands down, Pure MMA is by far the best school in the Northern NJ area. Both Andy and Mike bring about a wealth of knowledge in the areas of Brazilian jiu jitsu and mixed martial arts. They are both very skilled in this sport, and motivate their students of all levels, to succeed. I've never been in a place with a more friendly, open and encouraging environment, and yet the training that goes on here is deadly serious and the trainers and coaches are as good as they come. I train here myself and I bring my 7 year old son and 5 year old daughter here too. In the short time I've been training here I've been welcomed and made a part of a large team where every member is dedicated to the betterment of not only themselves, but of everyone they train with. This place (and the coaches, training partners and families that make it great) continue to allow me to grow and challenge myself and my entire life is better for it.
