Parking is one of the main things that should be addressed for a large volume center. Whether you are part of the large workforce in the many hospitals or a patient visiting the clinic or ER, parking should be easy. Some of garages are designed badly (two way traffic in narrow lanes and lots of blind spots). It can routinely take more than 10 minutes just to park in a garage, on top of travel time in Houston. As part of the business, parking seems to be a large source of income. I have gone to several locations in TMC, and the cost of parking is $$. Some garages charge $5-10 for the first hour, but I never have been in and out within an hour. Most garages are $10-20 for an average, single appointment. If you have lots of appointments, just parking alone gets expensive quickly. In addition, public transportation in Houston is not a good option. While the cost of a bus ride is much more affordable, the time you need to spend looking up routes and the time spent waiting and getting the bus can be easily 2-3 hours, if you aren't already inside the inner loop of Houston. Since TMC is a large campus, you would think that there might a regular bus loop for the different parking garages and hospitals and other buildings. However, since there are several different, large healthcare groups, each of the groups only provides transportation services to their own group of buildings. Privileges for a student or staff for UT Houston and Baylor College of Medicine are completely separate.

I'm still clueless as to why this makes a difference if a patient has arrived before another patient before their scheduled time to register for surgery. The person that actually turned this around and made this a pleasant experience for us is Elda. You can tell she cares about the patients and takes the time to explain things, even in Spanish, which my mom appreciated. Elda is kind and thoughtful. I told her she is good at her job and that's the truth. My mom finally got called from the waiting room and taken into surgery. She said she sat in the surgical gown for an additional hour. One of the nurses called me after I spoke to the doctor to reiterate the post surgery directions. Mom's doctor is awesome! The nurse brought out my mom and we both loaded her in. I think they're a bit understaffed and could use more space. There was literally nowhere to sit when we arrived. This is important because there's a lot of elderly and handicapped people who walk in!

I have nothing but great things to say about Dr Mathis he and his staff are excellent and have treated me respectfully since I began seeing him in 2003 for my first knee replacement. I recommend him for knees, shoulders, and hip replacements. I first met Dr Mathis when we both were working at the VA Medical Center in Houston Texas over 30 years ago. He was then the chief of orthopedic surgery. The first time I saw him after he left, we both looked at each other with a sense that we somehow knew each other and we talked about the VA and that was our common connection. Dr Mathis shared with me that he loved taking care of veterans and like most orthopedic surgeons when it comes to knee replacements required morbidly obese patient to lose some weight prior to surgery. He shared a veteran story with me that changed the way he looked at the process. He told me he had a veteran who was a prisoner of war (POW) who had normally weighed over 200 pounds but when he was released from captivity weighed less than 100 pounds. The veteran went on to explain that he was not going to deny himself food after that life-changing experience. Their conversation showed me that he had the capacity to connect with his patience and me being a veteran and I see how it translates and reveals itself in the care that he and his team provide!

When we found out my wife had breast cancer our PCP referred us to Dr. Hude for Oncology. We went…read moreto one visit (office) where he told us we would need to start Chemo therapy and do a PET scan. My wife did not feel good about this doctor so we found one that she felt comfortable with. After 1 visit we find out that she is not as bad as we had been led to believe. After bloodwork we find out that Chemo would not have even helped my wife's cancer. So instead of going with Dr. Hude's opinion, we saved my wife the damage of Chemo, had breast conserving surgery and is only going to need 4-6 weeks of radiation treatment. Please be careful and trust your feelings when they are telling you that something. This one guy could have made the rest of my wife's life much worst by predisposing her treatment, however we have a much more effective Oncologist and a much brighter future thanks to his open mind his ability to treat the cancer according to its properties. Not gonna say that money was a factor in any decision but the difference between them is astounding.
