North lakes can be a bit of a maze to most (myself included) but Meatland is luckily not far from one of the Motorway exits. It is within eye shot of costco and bunnings. Parking is off road in a carpark at the front of the store. The shop area is much smaller than other wholesale butchers but stocks a large variety. I was impressed with the quality and the prices were fantastic, much more reasonable than the supermarkets. Today i picked up chicken breasts for 8.99/kg, and have previously been buying them in a supermarket for 14.99/kg. There was also a large variety of sausages to pick from and they stocked boerwors for those South African expats living in Brisbane. They had a mix of grain fed beef and also grass fed beef for those paleo people like myself. One tip when visiting this store is to bring your own jumper or jacket, and if you forget you can grab a quick $2 coffee or hot chocolate from the till area. Staff are friendly and enthusiastic about discussing cooking methods and recipes.

Perving aside, thus started my 15 year love affair with Andrew's Quality Meats. It sounds gross, like who the hell has a love affair with a butcher shop? Me. Okay? They always do a great rib fillet. They do $2.99/kg chicken drumsticks practically all year round (my honey soy drummies are fantastic), the cuts are always good ones, not sloppy fatty ones (you know what i'm talking about), they do a great roast chicken breast with macadamia and cranberries inside (oven roasted 180 degrees celcius for 40 minutes) and they do amazingly lean sausages that taste even better than the fatty ones. They will french cut the pork rack for you, they will practically kill a cow and slice the rump off if they are out, they will crumb your lamb cutlets in front of you if they have none in the display window. In fact, Andrew even told me how best to cook my rib fillet roast as i'd never cooked one before all those years back. The shop was busy, and he took the time to pull mea side and make sure I knew what I was doing, to get the best out of the great cut of meat i'd just paid for. They also do family packs, bbq packs, cheap bones and mince for your dogs... the mince is minced fresh daily as well. 2kg of Premium 4 star beef mince for $16. 4 stars people! The meat isn't glad wrapped up, they do great turnover and they take orders over the phone, there isn't much these great bunch of guys won't do. You can buy whole rib fillets or rumps and ask to have them sliced to your preferred thickness on site. You can buy specialty meats like ox tongue (GROSS!), rabbits and even kangaroo if you are into that sort of thing. They also have a load of smoked meats which are prepared in store. There's lots of marinated / ready to cook options, and the fridge holds speciality packaged products and incredible hams. But what I saw when I walked in was the childrens drawings on the wall, the certificates of appreciation from local community groups and the butchers greeting customers by name. Give them a few days and they'll do specialty requests (boned turkey saved me a lot of effort) and they are great at making recommendations. If you live in this area you really shouldn't be buying your meat from anywhere else.

These guys remind me of the butchers of old (yes I'm old to). They open the door for you, genuinely talk with you about.....anything really. Carry your meat to the car (which helps with screaming kids) and always remember who you are. The meat itself is amazing. My partner is a raving hippy so for her it has to be 'organic'. Me, I don't care, as long as its red, dead and juicy I'll eat it. But the different sorts of cuts and marinates really spices up our barbies and makes 'us' look like 5 star chefs! Mmmmm....meeeeeat.
