I got a Smith Brothers sofa from Homemakers in Des Moines, Iowa 8 months ago. The back pillows are already breaking down. I paid over $1,000.00 for this sofa. I went to Homemakers 3 different times to look at this couch and talk with the sales people. Note: I live 2 1/2 hours away. Not one sales person told me that the back pillows are NOT under warranty. Not one sales person told me that due to the loose poly fill construction of the back pillows they WILL BREAKI DOWN. My old couch that I had for 12 years still looks brand new. The only reason why I replaced my old couch is because we wanted a longer one. I read the story of Smith Brothers and how they have high-quality, American made furniture. They use premium materials for a durable style that will last for generations. HA! Emily from Homemakers offered to replace the back pillows for an additional $50.29 per pillow and I would have to pick them up. #1 I refuse to put more of my money into this couch. #2 The back pillows are sewn onto the couch so I don't know how this will help me. My Smith Bros purchase was very disappointing. Price wise, it's high end, and there are some aspects of the furniture that are very good, however some aspects are very low quality. For example, they didn't flow match the stripping on the sides of my two chairs, and the seating cushions have rumpled wrinkles on the cushion fronts. I have purchased a lot of furniture in my lifetime and have never had a problem with the cushions. They did take the chairs back and fixed the flow match but only after the retailer's buyer got involved. They were unable to fix the cushions. They have an amazing selection of fabrics, but the build quality was not great. read more

We ordered a sofa and used the dimensions off of the order sheet to set our room up, we also upgraded the leather for an additional $1,000 charge, when the sofa arrived it looked cheap and was almost a foot shorter than noted on the order form. The look, feel and size made it impossible to use in our room and when we returned the sofa, we were hit with a huge restocking fee even though the quality and size were absolutely not as communicated. I purchased a Smith Brothers couch from Heritage House furniture store and it has not held up as expected. Despite proper care and maintenance, the leather on the seams has begun to deteriorate prematurely, which is significantly impacting the appearance and functionality of the couch. This is especially concerning, considering the substantial investment I made in purchasing this piece of furniture. I understand understand that the couch is beyond the one year warranty. However, I believe that the issues I'm experiencing are indicative of a manufacturing defect or subpar quality of material rather than normal, ware and tear. Heritage House Furniture at one point sent out a company to "repair" the leather which ended up meaning a company came and painted it. When I tried to get ahold of customer service at Smith Brothers, I was directed back to where I bought the couch. This has been extremely frustrating and no one wants to take responsibility for what appears to be a defect. I do not recommend purchasing a piece from either Heritage House Furniture or Smith Brothers if you're looking for customer care or even a positive experience. read more

Received a new sofa right before Thanksgiving. It looks great and is comfortable. Order to delivery was around 25 days - slightly better than the 4-6 weeks we were quoted. We did a lot of research before we purchased - materials, construction techniques, support systems, fabrics - and landed on a few candidates. We made our final choice based on style. As far as the company goes or their service mentality is concerned, we bought from a local store with great customer service and haven't had or expect a need to deal directly with Smith Bros. With some things it just doesn't make sense to me to buy from a commodity seller. Yeah, I'm probably paying a little more up front, but the peace of mind is worth it. An observation concerning all the complaints about pilling: we bought Ethan Allen furniture a few years back at twice the price of SB and it pilled terribly. Price doesn't matter. All woven fabric pills with use, especially in the early days. The fibers in some fabrics are just more susceptible to the problem. Sales people could do their stores and manufacturers more of a service by becoming educated themselves and then advising customers on either how to avoid the problem or deal with it if a customer insists on choosing a fabric that is more likely to pill. Pilling is a completely manageable issue not worth losing sleep over and shouldn't influence a decision for or against any particular manufacturer. Our Ethan Allen experience caused us to buy a pill shaver; they work wonders. read more

I can't express strongly enough the extent to which I regret the purchase of my expensive Smith Brothers sectional from Missouri Furniture. I feel foolish, like I've been duped by scammers. I have never spent this amount of money on furniture before, and this is definitely not the quality furniture that was assured. It looks old and worn even though it is lightly used and barely a year old. Within the first week, the fabric on the wedge cushion began to pucker. It was replaced, but the new cushion had the same problem as the original one. Then the fabric on the smaller cushions and the back began to pucker after use. I have to smooth it back out or it looks awful and cheap. The cushions also slip out of place after every use and have to be pushed back into place. One of the cushions is starting to look misshapen, even though I filp and rotate them every month. I have communicated with Missouri Furniture and shared photos with them for months only to be told repeatedly that Smith Brothers claims that this is normal wear. I demanded that action be taken. Missouri Furniture said that Smith Brothers eventually agreed to return it to their factory to look at it. After over two months of waiting for this to occur, I was recently told by Missouri Furniture that they were going to demand a date from Smith Brothers. They said they would contact me by a specific date and let me know. That was four days ago and I've heard nothing. After reading another review, I now realize that having them take the sectional back to look at it would be a total waste of time, since they are unwilling to accept any responsibility for their shoddy materials and products. I've also experienced the problem mentioned by other reviewers of loose feathers everywhere from the expensive feather pillows. The legs were also crooked and a technician had to fix that too. An inexpensive sectional that we purchased for our downstairs family room has been much more durable and still looks great. They have my money, and it is gone. Do not waste your money. I saw the sofa in a local retail showroom and it was recommended by the retailer. When the sofa was delivered, the cushions and back was very dense and uncomfortable to sit in. I cannot sit on the sofa for more than 10 minutes. Guests won't sit it in and seem very uncomfortable in it. I called and they tried to fix it but nothing worked. The sofa design, material, and craftsmanship are terrible. I purchased a smith brothers sectional 3.5 years ago for over $7,000. It is not used everyday but looks horrible. My grandparents 20 year old + sofa looks so much better than this. All of the cushions are out of shape. simply adding more fill does not help because the cheap quality of fabric has no dimensional stability. Smith Brothers furniture looks great when the store drops it off in your living room. Just don't sit in it every day. Here's where mine is after only ten years. I have one of their leather chairs and an ottoman. The armrests need reupholstering. The ottoman isn't far behind. We also bought a sofa with cloth fabric. The fabric has done nothing but pill, and pill, and pill ever since. It won't be long until it's threadbare. My family and I pride ourselves on taking care of what we buy and keeping it well beyond "normal" life expectancy. We spend more time at home than most people, so we went with what we were told was better quality. We are not large people, and our children were not rambunctious. Leather furniture should last 25 years. Yet here I am, looking at a nice bill for reupholstering, or buying new furniture. I would not buy A coach when I know the fabric is not better quality than that. They are certainly able to make better fabrics. Do your research. Bottom Line - DO NOT BUY SMITH BROTHERS! Their furniture was quality years ago but that must have been under an owner/CEO who gave a damn about their product. Today it is expensive and breaks down within a very short time. Our $3500 sofa and loveseat was worthless after a year. We developed back problems from the back cushions sagging and the seat cushions sliding out forcing you to sit in an uncomfortable reclining position. Smith Bros ignores your complaints if you contact them directly and directs you to your retailer. Our retailer didn't correct the problem and we threw $3500 out the window and bought new furniture. Not surprisingly, none of our three boys wanted the couch and loveseat when we decided to get rid of them, although the fabric was like new. Purchased a sectional sofa with chaise approximately 3 years ago for around $5000. I am sooo terribly disappointed. Special ordered this piece from Nebraska Furniture Mart. Waited about 8 weeks to receive. I thought I was getting a great piece of furniture that would last forever, what a joke. This letter will help to explain the facts that lead up to me writing the demand letter. I'm a eighty year old gentleman and my wife Marsha is seventy-six and we decided because of our age we needed to buy two chairs that would be easy to get out of and be comfortable so in our later years we could use these chairs. We picked Gigglin Pig because the furniture seemed well made, we checked out the furniture in the store and my wife found one that she found very comfortable I also found one that was a tall men's chair and was easy to get out of. When these chairs were delivered my wife found that her chair was different than the one at the store, it did not support her back and the only way she could use it she needed a pillow at her back. My chair I found was very hard on my buttocks I could only sit on the chair for two days at a time then I would get sore also the back was very soft and would push my head forward when sitting on the chair. After about three weeks we went back to the store and reported the problems to them and the chair my wife sat on was not there as it had been sold, so we were unable to compare the chair that we originally chose. They told us not to worry they would contact the company and get back to us. It took quite a while and a few telephone calls, we finally received a bag of material and we were told to fix it ourselves. The material was very soft somewhat like cotton wool and when compressed had no density I installed the material the best I could but I could not get the chair from pushing my head forward. I put some in the seat and found I could then sit in it approximately three days before I had a problem. On my wife's chair it did not fix her problem I used the whole bag of material. We reported the problem to the store he said that he would get the manufacturer representative to come out and check them, I offered to have them take the chairs back and I would take a discount so they would not lose money and he refused that. A representative did come out after I insisted and she told us there was nothing they could do about the chairs. We have both developed problems with our backs and hips and I also have some problems with my neck. We have tried our best to rectify this problem but we are left with no other option. We cannot live with these chairs for the rest of our lives they are too painful to sit in and we are going to donate these chairs and buy new ones as we cannot try to sell them because of existing problems. After purchasing a $4,000.00 sofa, we learn that it will be months before we receive the furniture; 8-12 to be exact. I realize it takes time, but perhaps a little more directness and honesty would be in order. Speaking to their customer service person to achieve a bit more accuracy and clarity, I was rebuffed and told to "work through your dealer". :-( Very nice man but again, how about a bit more straight talk and receiving furnishings in less than two to three months? I purchased a sofa and wing back reclining chair. I have a piece of wood under the cushion to prevent me from sitting inches from the floor. Don't buy from them. The fabric was awful. You could not sit on the couch with blue jeans as the dye transferred to the couch. I have had the couch for just under two years and it is ruined. I have had professionals clean it and they couldn't get the dye out. Now I will be spending $1500.00 to have it reupholstered, after spending almost $3000.00. There should be a disclaimer on certain fabrics to let buyers know which fabrics will do this. Checked availability of Fabric on Smith Brothers website, found it and also discovered a statement which indicated this fabric should not be used on recliners (specifically). 4. Contacted the Mart. First said it was outside of one year fabric warranty. I explained and sent evidence of fabric rupture and screenshot showing their error in selling us the recliners with that fabric. 5. Time passed. Eventually Smith Brothers agreed to send us small pieces of fabric for particular repairs AND I PAY AN UPHOLSTERER TO RE UPHOLSTER. 6. Thanks for nothing Warren Buffet and the Mart. AVOID! I love the styling of my sofa. It has character rather than a run of the mill sofa. That's where the lord be stops though. I hate giving a bad review to an American made product. But... I spent a lot of money for what I thought was a quality sofa. Structurally, the sofa is gone. Functionally, its a wreck! The 3 cushions shift around. Theses overall a 3 inch gap. I have to stuff a pillow on one end to remedy the problem. As much as I paid and with it just a few months old, I ought not be doing that! The do have a warranty, for what it's worth which is apparently nothing. One huge red flag, there's no way to contact the company directly. It has to be done via the retailer. So, I jumped through those hoops. My sofa was picked up on August and returned in October. Absolutely NOTHING was done. I was without a sofa for a couple months. Then, when it returned, nothing was fixed. I'm back to stuffing the pillow on an end so as not to fall between the cushions. It's uncomfortable with the gap. Just run far away.
