I was ready to get out of my marriage as quickly as possible so I could move on with my life…read more Having signed a pre-nup, per my ex's request, there was no way there would be any contesting going on. A friend of mine recommended Jeff and I was not disappointed. Jeff's attitude was great. He truly wanted to fight for me even though he only does uncontested divorces. He wanted me to get more than I asked for from my ex. If you're looking for a lawyer that will get the job done quickly in an uncontested divorce, Jeff will do the job for you. The time it took for my divorce to be final from the day I met Jeff was less than 2.5 months and it would've been even faster had it not been for my ex's lawyer taking his sweet time... Thanks Jeff!

And a bitter divorce battle can have an adverse effect on your children. The division of assets, including the marital house and retirement accounts, also come into play. The last thing you need to worry about is a drawn-out divorce process with mounting legal fees and growing hostility. And trying to work through the divorce without an attorney can be just as stressful. Avoid an expensive, lengthy, legal process you may not be able to afford. Why pay your hard-earned assets and cash, in the form of attorney's fees, to the very attorneys that you hired to protect those assets? And often, in a contentious divorce, the Judge issues a final order that satisfies neither party. Alternatively, why take-on the hassle and stress of going through a divorce without an attorney? You will invariably make mistakes and have no place to turn. If you and your spouse can consider the issues rationally and come to an understanding, then everybody wins. The process becomes faster, cheaper and less bitter. At the Law Office of Jeffrey A. Auerbach, I specialize in the uncontested divorce. Since graduating from Emory Law School in 1990, I have helped thousands of clients navigate through the divorce process. My vast experience means you will have the confidence in knowing your divorce will be done competently and efficiently.

During my consultation, I was told to expect approximately $20,000 through mediation, and my assigned attorney's hourly rate was $400. I understood that additional costs could arise, but I believed the total would remain reasonably close to that estimate. My actual experience was very different. During the first two weeks, I was billed $2,833.22. During the following two weeks, I was billed $7,627.50, bringing my total to $10,460.72 in just one month. The fees continued to increase, and before my Temporary Hearing and Mediation had even begun, my legal fees had already reached approximately $28,000. Throughout my case, attorneys other than my assigned attorney became involved. Before my important 60-Day Status Conference, my assigned attorney went on vacation and another attorney appeared on my behalf. Later, I was informed that another attorney would likely handle my Temporary Hearing as well. During my Temporary Hearing preparation meeting, much of the discussion focused on explaining why another attorney would handle the hearing rather than discussing strategy. I was concerned that each reassignment would require another attorney to spend additional time reviewing my case, resulting in more billable hours. I also did not learn until later that the newly assigned attorney's hourly rate exceeded $500 per hour. The firm explained that cases may be handled as a team and that each attorney's hourly rate was disclosed in the engagement agreement. I acknowledge that I should have reviewed the agreement more carefully. However, when I signed, my focus was on my assigned attorney's $400 hourly rate. I did not fully understand that multiple attorneys and paralegals could each bill separately for time spent on my case. I was also billed separately for emails, internal meetings, file reviews, and paralegal work. Even the time spent discussing billing concerns or questioning charges was billed, making it difficult to raise concerns without worrying about additional costs. The firm explained that the large number of emails and documents I provided naturally required additional attorney time. While I understand that explanation, I personally did not feel that I received the level of strategic advocacy and case management I expected in return. By comparison, the opposing party's law firm, M&T (Meriwether & Tharp), appeared to represent its client aggressively while, to my understanding, operating under a flat-fee billing model. Meanwhile, I found myself constantly worrying about mounting hourly legal fees and hoped for a more proactive approach from my own legal team. Then, while my Temporary Hearing and Mediation had not even occurred, I received a request to deposit an additional $7,500 into my trust account. At that point, I became more afraid of the legal bills arriving every two weeks than I was of the divorce litigation itself. I ultimately concluded that I could not realistically afford to continue through trial under this billing structure and retained another law firm that offers flat-fee representation through trial. I did not change attorneys because I was afraid to fight my case. I changed because I could no longer manage the uncertainty of the firm's billing structure and the repeated possibility of attorney reassignments that could generate additional costs. I am not saying this firm is the wrong choice for everyone. Clients with substantial financial resources who are comfortable with a team-based approach may have a different experience. However, if cost is an important factor for you, I encourage you to compare different billing models--including flat-fee firms such as M&T (Meriwether & Tharp)--before deciding which law firm is the best fit for your situation. This review reflects only my personal experience. I hope it helps others better understand a firm's billing practices, staffing model, and overall cost structure before making their decision.
