You're in this sacred ceremony, and the big moment is... some fuzzy string switches sides? The Chancellor of Hogwarts will go, "By the power vested in me, you may now... transform." No one knows why we do this. Four+ years of caffeine-fueled memorizing, tens of thousands of dollars, and it's... flip that string over, you're a whole new person now. The whole time you've got "Pomp and Circumstance" playing on repeat. Its like the music you'd hear as a king gets crowned, not as Seymour from Slusher Hall waddles across the stage in a wrinkled gown. At the end you get to throw the hat. The first time this happened was at the Naval Academy. They got new officer hats, so no longer needed the old ones. It makes sense... new jobs, new hats. It's definitely a peaceful space, with botanical gardens, tree-lined walkways, and beautiful fountains that encourage focus, tranquility and serenity for every student on campus! The campus almost feels like a postcard, featuring 16th-century Plateresque architecture, a style of the Spanish Renaissance- paying homage to both San Diego's Catholic heritage and the Universidad de Alcalá in Spain. I do not like how you are taught by different instructors and every few months you are getting your schedule changed around from Tuesdays/Thursdays or Monday/Wednesdays. You also cannot work for the last 2 months up until your graduation BUT you HAVE to pay loans. Ms. Cooke does not have good hygiene; she also teaches slower and has us teach ourselves for the most part. She did not teach right technique on mannequin arms, so we got straight to using needles on each other fairly fast which can be quite dangerous when your classmate is not confident in themselves rightfully so. Staff is either understaffed or the staff that work have favorites. It is a mess; I could go on and on.

Early last year, I had trouble getting scheduled for additional classes. After weeks of unanswered calls and emails, my current advisor eventually responded and did help me get enrolled. At the time, I appreciated the assistance. Now, however, the experience has completely changed. Since November, my advisor has stopped responding entirely. No callbacks, no email replies, nothing. My last class ended in December, and as we approach February, I am still not enrolled in new courses, despite repeatedly reaching out. This is especially stressful because I was planning to graduate this year, and the lack of support may delay that goal. Another advisor managed to enroll me in one class starting in March, but that still leaves an unnecessary gap in my academic schedule. What makes this more frustrating is that my advisor previously told me to reach out within a "reasonable amount of time" to avoid scheduling gaps, yet I did, and I still ended up with a gap. So I have to ask: what exactly is considered a "reasonable amount of time" if months of notice still isn't enough? Overall, this has been an exhausting, disappointing experience that has disrupted my education.

The entire campus is flat, super easy to walk, and feels very safe. The buildings look new and are incredibly clean -- I mean really clean! Their athletic programs are top-notch. We spent the whole afternoon with the team and coaches, and everyone was welcoming and professional. And get this -- tuition for the first year is only $9,300, and the following year is ZERO dollars! Say whaaaat?! Huge thank you to the coach for taking the time to meet with us and even treating us to lunch. I was gonna take a class…read morefor the first semester but I couldn't because mesa was not accepting the form my high-school was sending them. my highschool sent one FOUR TIMES for saying its ok for me to attend Mesa to get extra credits and this went on for a MONTH while it keeps saying my high school needs to send a form and my school keeps saying they did and keeps showing me they are sending the form so i know it was not my high-school fault and everytime I tried calling the school no one picked up for THREE HOURS, if they did even pick up, a lady picks up and always send me to someone else because she dont want to be helping me and do her JOB, then am back on hold for at least another HOUR till someone picks up and then hangs up. I know its not a glitch in the system because I can HEAR someone Breathing or someone talking in the background. this made me not be able to get into a class because no one accepted the form on MESAS SIDE. the same thing happened when I tried getting in on the second semester but this time I went into the school because I was not gonna deal with the phone crap trying to get a hold of someone. so I made my STEP FATHER take off work for the day to go talk to the student services, the front desk people are polite and I told them what happen with the phone stuff thwy apologize and said they will talk with the staff about it, they DIDNT... because I tried calling for a question about the website for Mesa. then after awhile I got into the class I wanted, first day, I came early to find the class and it was a SUB because the real teacher couldn't come in because he broke his hand, the sub wrote down everything we needed to do till we see eachother the next meeting day also which the teacher did NOT ADD ANY WEBSIGHT TO FIND CANVAS on the board on thw first day so i had to CALL THE SCHOOL AGAIN, WAITED A HOUR and had to give my information to another lady becauseonce again the firsr lady never does ANYTHING and had to get a email to my professor to get everything done. when I came in the next time I came early once more, also had everything DONE because I had to take a bus. I got onto canvas on my laptop because i haven't login to it on my laptop because i did my work on my home computer. once I am in canvas it said I am not ENROLLED IN ANY CLASSES so I went BACK to student services ask a man whats going on and showed my id, he said I got KICKED OUT BY THE PROFESSOR and said NO REASON ON THE COMPUTER...I was PISSED because I did the work and was not late and came to school...so I waited for ANOTHER SUB and she didnt know what happened or why the teacher KICKED ME...so I left that class even tho the sub said I can stay, I didnt want to stay because all this work for me just to get kicked OUT???. so I wrote the sub why did he kicked me out and I had to wait a few hours for him to reply, which with him I find reasonable because he got a broken hand and once I got the response he said I was not there on the first day...which I WAS because if I wasn't there on the first day how did I send him a picture of HIS white board of what the sub put on the first day sent to him because when asking for the canvas link I send the picture along with it, so I basically GAVE UP and left this school and NEVER COMING BACK to Mesa to deal with all this drama. During these times of COVID (everything is online, even PE - and Mira Mesa, Miramar and City are…read moreconsidered one combined entity, which I really like) I decided to quit my job and go back to school after decades since graduating high school. At the beginning of the semester I was fortunate enough to start chatting with a classmate who is going for the same degree as I am. We are trying to match our future core classes up so we have each other to lean on during this adventure over the next 2 years. I am just finishing up a semester here and so far have found the classes interesting and the professors competent and mostly communicative. I am looking forward to continuing my education here. I think, under the circumstances, this school has made reasonable adjustments to move 100% online. As a result, though, the website is pretty clunky and sometimes difficult to navigate, but you can more or less get what you need if you set aside a day and go through it thoroughly. There are a lot of self-tests and videos to watch to get you acquainted of how things are done. If you are pursuing a degree, you are required to speak to a counselor (online of course), and making an appointment with one is pretty much impossible via the website without assistance (search engine is useless); you have to call the school for advice on how to set up an online appointment with one. Someone got back to me the following day. Finally, after a couple weeks' wait, I ended up with a pleasant counselor, who helped me with my education plan via Zoom. Come prepared for this appointment by writing up a list of all your questions so you do not have to get another appointment. Besides the eye-rolling liberal vibe here, nothing can be more ridiculous than the staff who handles transcripts. I have never encountered such incompetence in my life. I took online college for a certificate in Internet and Website Development back in 2004-2005. Unfortunately the college I attended had closed sometime over the past 15 years so it was a cluster to track down my transcripts. SDCCD denied my transcripts because they keep asking me for a "missing" transcript from another state. The college I went to was online and had like 800 campuses and my profs were from all over the country. Apparently my one set of transcripts is not enough; they want the same set from another state(??!) and I am not completely sure why that is, and I do not think they know, either. I told them more than once I am unable to provide transcripts I never had; I gave them everything that exists in my name and what they are asking makes zero sense. I resubmitted my request to have them re-evaluated and was promptly denied again. This did not discourage me from continuing my education here (transcripts that ancient are probably not worth much), but it has definitely left a bad impression. I received zero assistance in rectifying this and gave up. Other than that, I am happy here so far and am (kinda) looking forward to putting in the sweat to get this degree. Go to a site like ratemyprofessor and research reviews of your future professors before signing up for courses. You will also have to move quickly as seats fill up fast. Good luck.

I've taken classes at three of the four San Diego Community College District's schools. Of them,…read moreSan Diego City College has been my worst experience by far. Safety: This is the biggest concern. The open campus is located in a high traffic area (due to the trolley being right next to it). Anyone can come and go from the campus with little issue. There has never seemed to be any campus police presence. I've never felt safe walking to and from campus, even during the day. Atmosphere: SDCCD's family of schools like to promote that they're inclusive and "safe-spaces" for marginalized groups. And while I've gotten that feeling from City's sister schools, I constantly see vandalism on City's campus targeting racial and sexual minorities. Combined with the fact that the campus is kept up about as well as the surrounding downtown area (in other words: not kept up very well at all), this does not feel like a welcoming and inclusive space. Faculty: Every professor I've taken at City College has fallen into one of two categories. Either they use the class to espouse their personal beliefs (often on topics not related to the class), or they just don't care about their students' success at all. On one occasion, both. Teachers who brag about their fail rate on the first day of classes, smugly saying that they expect 70% of the class to drop by the end of the semester, need to reassess their teaching styles. 70% of your students should NOT be dropping or failing your class. Administration: If you have any problems with a teacher, you'd be better off just dropping and taking the "W" on your record and retaking the class at Mesa or Miramar. Attempting to get an appointment with a counselor is next to impossible, unless you have all day to wait around for a possible drop-in. If you try to reach out to deans or department heads, expect to wait a long time before you hear back--if you ever do. No one at that school cares about student success or well-being. If you need to register with a service like VA, EOPS, or DSPS, you basically need to go to campus and force them to schedule you, because they won't respond to calls or emails. Disabled Students: The campus is a network of hills, with very few elevators. It was clearly not designed with disabled students in mind. Unless you're in an electric wheelchair, it's nearly impossible to get around quickly. As I said above, attempting to register with DSPS is fruitless unless you physically go in to schedule. Campus Layout: The campus is a labyrinth built into a mountain. The buildings are laid out in a toggled grid pattern and labeled with letters that sometimes correspond to the subject(s) being taught in those buildings ("MS" being "Math and Social Sciences" and "S" being "Science"), but also sometimes not ("D" being the campus store and "L" being the "Academic Success Center"). The buildings aren't laid out in any sort of alphabetical order ("A" building is on the opposite corner of the school from "AH" and "B" buildings), so it's next to impossible to figure out where you need to go unless you have the campus map in front of you. The Library (what they call the "Learning Resource Center") is located at the far front corner of the campus, as far from classroom buildings as you can get, which makes it extra difficult to study between classes, and there are limited study spaces inside the classroom buildings. You either need to schedule your classes with no time between, or an hour or more between, or get comfortable with studying while sitting on the floor or outside. Programs: Since City is part of the same District as Mesa and Miramar, they have a lot of the same classes. So even if your specific certification/degree isn't offered through Mesa or Miramar, you can still take your classes there and get your degree through City College. The major exception are vocational programs, like Cosmetology or the AIRE program. If those are the directions you want to go, you'll either need to tough it out at City or look into alternatives (private institutions, Palomar, Grossmont, etc). Overall, San Diego City College is just a mess of a school. It's worth the extra hour or so to commute to Mesa or Miramar instead. Both of those campuses, while not without some administrative flaws, are much better, safer, and just generally care more about their students.

May I say the trip to the college on a Saturday the many buses you can catch bsck to Lajolla Village for many of the busses do conbect at the Lajolla Village Trolley. For the Mira Mar College is one of the closet to the North County with the man6 buses that travel through the many areas of the Mira Mesa and the Kearny Mesa. Mira Mesa College is one of the wide colleges yet with the color of the color the buildings in grey brick with the large milar sign at the front. As a Yelp Elite Reviewer the many places that I have been the many places have great histories with the best food you can find some of the best.
