Well, my boyfriend and I hit the jackpot. We went on a Tuesday morning @ 9am for the 2 hour trail ride & no one else showed up. We got our very own personal tour! First off, the two hour ride through the desert is hands down one of the most unique experiences you can ask for. Debbie was our guide & she was great. Her and I spoke most of the ride so on top of great views I got a little bit of insight on Joshua Tree, Palm Springs & Frank Sinatra. Our horses were full of personality & we loved every second! It was great fun. Love Murray Canyon. I would say not a typical open trail ride. We went to the top of the ridge the dropped down into the canyon and crossed the creek several times. So it was a bit technical but the horses all know the trail well. You just need to redistribute your weight when climbing or going down the hill. I have to say the helmets as cowboy hats made wearing a helmet fun and great pictures. read more

What a great time. I was visiting a friend in early March and he set up a 2 hour ride for us at 8am. We had a very nice talk with the owner who was very gracious and easy to speak with. We then had our horses show up with the trail guide. No waiting and a private guide for two! It was a slow and easy ride and very enjoyable. Our guide Salvador was great. He was extremely knowledgeable about the area and fun to be with. We started in in a very flat area and moved on to a rocky environment then to the foothills of the mountain range where there was a stream and a shady area for resting. Wow! What an amazing experience this was! The trainer was knowledgeable and patient, answering all of my questions. The horse was wonderful, too. The trainer suggested that a private lesson with the two hour ride would be better than practicing in the Arena on flat land. A bit more expensive but totally worth every penny! Horseback riding at Smoke Tree Stables was the highlight of our trip for my kids. They were a little skittish about riding horses for the first time. The staff was very accommodating and made them feel comfortable and at ease. We went on the hour-long ride and afterwards, my kids wanted to go again. This was definitely the highlight of our weeklong stay in Palm Springs. We did the 2 hour Murray Canyon haul ride and our guides were Colonel, Joy, and Alex, they were exceptional guides. When we return to Palm Springs, we would do this ride again. Cost was $120 for the 2 hour ride. We drove out to the Indian canyon and got on the horses there. At first, it was a little nerve wrecking because we were told not to hold on to the saddle horn but once you get going you'll acclimate and will get it. It was good advice. If you held onto the horn, your body will pay for it. We were well taken care of and had so much fun. Arrive early because You'll need to sign waivers, and get proper helmets on. They give you bags to store your phone and whatever you're bringing along and they provide water. Wear sunglasses and sunscreen. read more

Our group went on a two hour tour on a Monday. We had a nice, dusty, quiet ride. Very scenic. Our tour guide Jeff was great. He seemed quiet and brooding, just what you'd want in a cowboy. :) He was very helpful and knowledgable about the trail. Unfortunately he wasn't partial to us Texas folk. Or our state anyway. Ha! WOW! This was the best part of my trip to Palm Springs. The website gives very accurate information, and the staff are all very helpful and nice. I was lucky enough to have Debbie as my guide. She was the perfect balance of conversation, area knowledge and horse whisperer. My one hour ride was comfortable (I am not an experienced rider) and the route we took was breath taking. My two girls have been begging me to take them horseback riding while we are out in the desert. Smoke Tree Stables was recommended by the concierge, so we drove out Sunday morning for a one hour ride... Never disappointed! This place is exactly what someone who has had only a little experience with horses can feel safe and secure. They provide you with saddlebags for all your "cargo" (ie water bottle, phone, camera, etc.) and either a helmet for kids (required) or a cowboy hat (optional). Our guide Jeff was fantastic! My mother had never ridden a horse before, and he gently helped her mount and dismount her horse "Dusty," and made her feel comfortable the entire ride (she was a tad nervous). My two girls were so excited to be out on the trail, zero complaints the entire time (that coupled with my mom actually riding a horse, two miracles in one morning!) that all involved truly enjoyed the experience. I would highly recommend Smoke Tree Stables for anyone looking to do something a tad different in Palm Springs! read more
