Let me start with the food. Fries were pretty good, gravy was really good and the curds were decent. Overall you would think why the 1 star. Let me tell you. This place is located on the boardwalk in tourist heavy Halifax. What the tourist don't know and what is ultra shady is this location does a $1 for $1 exchange rate US to Canadian. Everyone knows that the exchange rate is in favor of the US dollar here hey this location thinks they can make their own rules and just decide to steal money from unsuspecting folks. No sign saying anything, just shady business practices. Do yourself a favor and find another place to buy your poutine. Shame on this business and their owner. read more

I hate to say it...but I don't get the hype around Smoke's. My husband and I went for lunch the other day and I was expecting a lot based on some of the reviews I've seen. But honestly? New York Fries is better. I know. I'm heart broken too. The interior is great - they've got a pretty small space, but there is a ton of seating. It's a little plaid heavy, but hey, that's the schtick right? I'm good with it. And they have a huge menu, so I was really optimistic. We ordered the regular poutine and the perogy poutine. The portion sizes are great - I was stuffed after. So it's a good value for money...if you like gravy that doesn't have any taste to it at all. I want to taste the gravy if I'm getting poutine! The curds were bland, and the fries were okay, so I was overall pretty disappointed with my order. The perogy poutine was a bit better because of the ham chunks interspersed within the fries. The perogy was medocre at best - it tasted like it was from one of those big bags at the grocery store that you reheat. But the ham gave the gravy more taste, so this one was better over all. I appreciate that Smoke's does vegetarian gravy and that they have a huge menu, but maybe they should perfect their gravy before going all out first? read more

I've never heard of anything called poutine before. So when we were just strolling along the bay downtown Halifax and stumbled across this awesome delicacy, I had no chance but to fall on love w a it. We ordered the bacon cheeseburger (perhaps the most sinful of all). It was wonderful! Chunks of beef and fried bacon, lots of cheddar and mozzarella cheese, gravy (not unlike what they use for KFC's whipped potatoes) and of course their generously cut fries. I began writing this review with 5 stars, but I felt my throat close up due to the heavy flavor as I was trying to finish it up. Tossing down against the local king of poutine, Willy's, Smoke's recently opened up directly across the street from Willy's, and with more regular hours, a more diverse menu and a less sketchy set up, Willy's has some serious competition on their hands. I come in on a Thursday after work and upon entering I am immediately greeted by loud rock music and and equally loud design scheme. There's a chalkboard and available chalk and what looks like random scrawling of people who were out at the Dome on the previous night. I may be in a suit and tie, but I dig it. Smoke's isn't large and seats no more than 12 at bars in the middle of the room and around the sides. There's a steady flow of people coming and going, running the gamut of all levels of society - suited professionals, starving students and a lovely young lady who was rocking the "hot librarian" look like no other, and probably wasn't a poutine regular judging from her figure. But yeah....back to that food stuff I'm supposed to write about.... With a menu that sports what I counted to be 18 different poutines, there is a lot of choices here. I settle on the Country Style, and choose the regular size ($6.99) as I want to be able to walk out of here. With large chunks of chicken, bacon and caramelized onions and mushrooms in addition to the usual gravy and cheese curds, this was a meal unto itself. The chicken is seems too uniform in shape to be anything but from frozen, but it isn't dry and let's face it, it's chicken. The chopped bacon is plentiful and delicious, and is still crisp with lends a nice textural contrast to the rest of this hot mess. The onions and mushrooms soothe my food guilt by being vegetables and are quite tasty themselves, although the caramelized onions have been seasoned with too much thyme and in the absence of any bacon, tends to dominate the flavour of a given forkful of poutine. The gravy is good, although thinner and somewhat lost amongst all the other toppings. The curds, while tasty, don't seem to have that squeak that poutine pros require. Me, I love anything cheese and continue to stuff my face. The fries have a good potato flavour and are crisp, even to the very last chip. The containers are cardboard boxes that are reminiscent of your stereotypical Chinese-takeout box, and are lined with some sort of plastic which will keep your pants grease free when one of these nights you're sitting on the wall by the church, munching on Smoke's and watching some poor drunk get thrown in a paddy wagon. The staff are awesome, the music is awesome, and with all the hills surrounding I at least work off 1/4 of the calories! The only downside, in my opinion, is that there is no SMALL size, the reg is way too big for me, and I cant share cause my boyfriend is weird and likes crazy things on his poutine! I've just popped a TUMS as I'm writing this. Those with stomach of steel can read further. Just got out of a late meeting and wanted something within a few blocks and cheap. Being after 1pm, the joint was empty. I quickly went up to the counter and asked the advertised poutine outside - beef curry poutine. I wasn't sure of the size, so I picked large. Well mistake #1. Unless you'll be sharing this, go for the regular. After a 8 min wait, I got my hot box of gooey fries. At first it tasted fine, fries were still incredibly hot if you dug to the bottom. But as time went on the heaviness of the poutine was coming on. Cheese was a bit light and the fries were ok. Not overly impressed for what I got for 12$ (large poutine & pop) especially now the flavors have lingered and the meal has settled. I think the sauce is a bit off. From the previous reviews I will +1 to that. Presentation and service was fine, maybe I'll stick to the traditional dishes next time, or if I happen to in the area at 1am. I'll start this off by saying I'm not Canadian, so maybe I don't know what poutine is supposed to taste like. But, I got the beef deluxe at Smoke's and it was delicious! I really enjoyed the gravy over the fries, and although I would've liked more mushrooms, there was a good amount of beef, peas, onions, and mushrooms. This was our first time trying poutine, so I did some research. My husband is a vegetarian and this place had the option of a vegetarian mushroom gravy- so we had to try it. I got a little adventurous and tried the Philly cheesesteak poutine. I'm a Philly girl, had to get it. It was good, but obviously extremely heavy when it hits your stomach! My only critique is that the roasted red peppers on top are not really Philly cheesesteak related at all. My husband got the vegetarian poutine and his was really good. After my initial lackluster impression of Smoke's poutine, based on samplings of their classic poutine and one topped with vegetarian gravy, I had a hard time getting over the taste of either gravy. Add to that some hard-to-notice curds (no squeak), and you've got an unimpressed eater. But yet, the promise of specialty poutine creations drew me back in... On Friday night, I ventured back after a long day of pub-hopping which you can take to mean that I was in a happy, hungry mood with intoxicatedly low expectations. That's why I was so disappointed by the time I was tossing a half-eaten box of cheesy fries in the garbage because I just didn't care enough to keep eating them. I got the veggie nacho poutine which comes with salsa, sour cream, guacamole and jalepenos (which I nixed). If you were to break down the proportions of those toppings that came in the final product, it'd be 97% salsa, 2% sour cream (a drizzle over top), and 1% guacomole (a teaspoon-full in the corner). For most of what I did eat, it felt like eating cold salsa (which didn't do wonders for the overall temperature of the fries) by the spoonful with the occasional fry mixed in. While the guy working behind the counter was much friendlier than the folks usually behind the window at Willy's, I'm choosing my side of the poutine war based on which I'd rather be eating. I hate Smoke's. Actually, hate it. It is by far the most overrated chain of restaurants ever. People everywhere talk about Smoke's as if its the absolute holy grail of poutine but it really isn't. I've been to Smoke's a lot, mostly out of suggestion of my friends as they seem to fall in the above category. I've therefore tried a lot of stuff on their menu. The poutine gravy here is too salty and it sucks. They don't put enough curds on it and they aren't really fresh either. The vegetarian poutine is also far far too salty. I've tried several of their other poutines too like the nacho grande (garbage), peppercorn chicken (tasteless), veggie deluxe (tolerable with sriracha), and the chili cheese bacon - by far the most tolerable out of the Smoke's menu options, the cheese sauce is flavorless though so make sure to load up on the sriracha. The staff at this particular Smoke's also suck and are borderline rude. Pros of Smoke's: they sell pop shop pop, they also have a great amount of vegetarian options. Go across the street to Willy's. Do yourself a favor. read more

Being a poutine shop, you would think they would have great poutine. After several minutes of deliberation on the variety of poutine, I settled on a traditional-style poutine: fries, gravy, and cheese curds. I was underwhelmed by the poutine, which is served in a cardboard container. The large size yielded enough fries and gravy to choke a horse, but I found the quality wanting. My main gripe with Smoke's was the french fries. They did not taste fresh, and were far from crispy, as I would have expected. The fries felt like they had been pulled out of the freezer minutes before I arrived. The gravy and cheese curds were fine, but again, nothing spectacular. When I walked in, I was hit immediately with loud rock music, which I wasn't really in the mood for. The shop is also a little cramped for space, so you may want to take your poutine elsewhere to eat. The decor was kitschy and interesting, but it did not make up for the yawn-worthy fries. Super disappointed after everyone said it was great. Gravy had absolutely no taste and the cheese didn't even taste like cheese and there was barely any. Fries=super soggy I got the nacho grande without chili and the salsa was overpowering. Basically just small smushed tomatoes and onion. Knew the reviews werent so fabulous for Smoke's, but work wife and the other half of my review-o duo convinced me to go anyways. It was just ok. That is the best way to describe it. Im really not picky about my fries/cheese/gravy. I won't freak if they dont use cheese curds used and if they fries are frozen frm a bag I won't complain about that either. If I need something bad to eat, Im just happy to be eating something calorie-laden! I ordered Mama's poutine which came with chicken and peas.. sounded good to me. Claudia had the Nacho poutine. It was kind of gross watching the girl at the counter wiggle the box around to shift the contents, smoosh it all down with the lid flaps and then close it as the contents oozed out. I felt she should have washed her hands or gloved up before... she definitely could have brushed onto the food while she was doing this. We both ate most of our portions, and it did the trick for fries/cheese/gravy/calories, but not enough that I would ever go back! I could easily make a better version at home. So I friggin LOVE poutine. And admittedly, I love Willy's poutine. But I was nonetheless excited when I saw a poutinerie opening up next door to where I work. I have been there twice now- once with the Nacho Grande and once with the Bacon. Both were really really good, but as far as poutine goes, this is "technically" poutine, but if I wanted JUST poutine, I would choose Willy's hands down. The fries at Smokes aren't great and the gravy isn't as yummy as Willy's, but the toppings are delicious and is definitely on my list of junky food favorites. Next up-chicken curry poutine! Too much hype and no substance for overpriced pile of mess. Went their Saturday night after reflections, sadly it was all that was open. This was my 5th time eating here. I was never satisfied before but chalked it up to being a bit too drunk. This time I was sober and was very clear that this would be my last time eating here. We only wanted a small but were told we could only get medium. I got the beacon cheese burger and my friend got the donair. $23.00 later! Once we got home which took less than 15 minutes we began to eat. The toppings were good on mine. But my friends the donair meat was hard and old tasting. We got to the fries and they were gross and soggy. Neither of us ate any of the fries. At that point I remembered that every time we order from there we never eat the fries, now I know why. I've posted already on my favourite poutine place in town (Willy's) - but I still want to try different poutines from all around. I heard about this place from a friend who raved about it. Unfortunately, I'll be taking her dining advice with a grain of salt from now on - but I supposed to each their own. I enjoy the simplicity of a poutine - 3 ingredients, made to work together in a great mix. I personally don't like all the complexity of Smoke's poutines. There are just too many ingredients for my liking and my taste buds get confused - like I said, I like simplicity. I'd rather have 3 ingredients done really well instead of 8 done so-so. However, I will say that the portions are really big for what you order, even the regular is more than enough. Now some of you might be saying 'well just get the regular poutine!' and I'd reply with 'I did' - I went there more than once. The second problem that I found with Smoke's is that the gravy is just too bland. I think they try to cover that up with all the other ingredients - but when one of your main ingredient of 3 isn't good, then it doesn't matter what you add. read more

I went to Smoke's tonight hoping for big things. The size and choices of poutine seemed like this place would be a guaranteed winner. I mean if you had that many choices on the menu it must be good, right? Sorry, no. I had the regular original poutine and I was very underwhelmed. The gravy was too thin and it had a strange bland taste to it that didn't turn my crank. The fries were dried out and limp, like they had been sitting around too long. That's strange though because there were quite a few people there so I can only conclude that is how they make them. The cheese curds were tiny and not rubbery the way I think cheese curds are supposed to be in poutine. The other thing that I didn't like about this place was that the music was really loud. You'd expect some kind of music from a place like this but, turn it down a bit, I'm not in a club. If you want a better poutine go across the street to Willy's or head to Alexandria's. read more

I mean we're buying poutine here.. Clearly we are not that picky in this moment about our food choices. I like smokes because I enjoy all the topping choices. I just ordered and ate the county style. Although it was good, it was too smothered in toppingy goodness. Which made it difficult to get to the fries, gravy and curds. Who are the clear stars of the show. Smoke's Poutine. It's a tub of fresh cut french fries with cheese curds the size of a child's finger. There are different types with their own toppings which are LOADED on top of this already hearty mess. It comes steaming but after you gasp at the sheer magnitude of what's in front of you it congeals beautifully in the box which its served. Me and my gf call it a FOOD BRICK and absolutely adore this as the coda to a booze filled evening. Staff is great. Always friendly and ever patient even when suffering a constant stream of drunks (and if you haven't served drunks, let me tell you that some drunks are not very polite, while some are overly polite to the point of never getting around to making their order). But the staff remain at ease and get those poutines made... what I'm saying is don't be intimidated by long lines, you'll get your food brick in no time. My only criticism is the gravy, which doesn't have much of a taste. A little watery. That's a lot of people's criticism too. I'm not sure if it has to do with being mass produced or maybe the gravy is 'mild' so that it doesn't jar with the array of ingredients on the other poutines but, when people knock their gravy in favour of other places, I have to agree. That being said, gravy ain't everything and I'm more about the chips, cheese and other artery hardening hangover preventing goodies. If you're drunk, get the WOW size, it will sober you up. If you're sober and looking for supper, think twice second about that WOW-size and reconsider the Regular (seriously, don't be a hero). read more

I must go on really, really good nights. I am super picky but I have truly lucked out with ridiculously good poutine at this spot. Ala 'Brokeback Mountain' - I just don't know how to quit you! I prefer my poutine to be traditional which tends to be what I order here. My fries are always perfectly done and never soggy. They put on just enough gravy to cover the cheese curds without giving my poutine soup. I truly appreciate that. C tends to get ridiculous meaty concoctions on his poutine and loves it every time. Went in for the first time ever and ordered a small snack of fries. The guy at the counter was friendly. Although I ordered a small, the container had a lot of fries in it. I noticed they came sprinkled with white salt (the chunky kind). I took one and it tasted really good. So I kept eating them as is. They were not too greasy, and they were a nice crisp (and crunchy) brown colour. Not too dark, not too light, just right! I really liked them a lot. And so I kept eating them as is. At the end I poured Heinz ketchup, vinegar, S & P on the remainder just as a test. But no, these fries were great just as they were served, with chunky white salt. I would order them again. Had to have a poutine at the place that gets some raves. Actually, we stopped in here twice. Once for the traditional, and another time for something of variety. On the hot sunny day, we could not tolerate being in the sweltering hot indoors. Got the traditional to go, along with a very expensive bottle of soda. The next day, weather was rainy and cooler, and the kids wanted to try it again. This time the heat was welcome indoors, and the kids tried some other variety of toppings. I was very excited to hear about a place dedicated strictly to poutine opening in downtown Halifax. Whether it's after a hard night at the club or a lunch after work in the mid-afternoon, I do enjoy finding a spot to grab a poutine and relax before heading home. There're already a few spots open within the vicinity so location-wise, maybe the new Smoke's spot is taking a chance. Or maybe not. Every time I've been so far, it's been fairly busy. With very limited seating (fits maybe about 10 or 11), ordering to go might be encouraged. But I usually prefer to eat-in and that's what I've done so far. You must be willing to handle high volume 80s rock, with extra cheese, if what comes with your poutine isn't enough because that's what's always playing. Hanging out for 15-20 minutes suits me fine but I don't know if I could handle too much more. The service has always been prompt enough for me, considering the poutine is made to order and there's a lot to choose from. Personally, I prefer the plain ol' regular poutine. I've been tempted to try some of the other types including the chili poutine last week and the bacon one awhile ago. While they might suit some people, I found the bacon one too... bacony. Yep... it can happen. And the chili one was pretty good but I'd still prefer the original so far. Compared to other poutines that I've had, I do find this one a bit too salty for me. Of course, with such a large amount of gravy and cheese, what do I expect? Speaking of sizes, there are two of them. I've only ever gotten the small size and it always did the trick, even if I walked in really hungry. I'm tempted to order a large just once but I'll be sure to order that to go. I can't promise a very long review about this place; I just don't have that much to say. It's quite small inside, and I've always seen it busy, so I wouldn't go there hoping to get a seat. Luckily, the food comes in takeout boxes, so transporting is nice and easy. There are a lot of different poutines to order from. This being my first time, I went with regular. Gravy, fries, and cheese curds. I mean really, what more do you need from a meal? We got our food pretty quick, and were lucky enough to have some seats clear up. Now the poutine here is by no means bad. It's good poutine, don't get me wrong! I just don't think it's anything amazing. It's not The Poutine, which I find myself still looking for. The bad first: The service is usually sketch, though today it was good. That being said, there was one girl who was delightful and gave me an extra fork because I ordered two poutines. When I gave it back, she said, "you're going to eat both of them?" and I said "yeah, I'm a growing boy" and she said "be careful or you're going to get fat" and I said, "darlin, I'm already fat" and she said "no you're not" and I believed she believed that, but I am fat. Oh Smoke's. How I love you. I've only been a handful of times, but I've yet to be disappointed. The Philly Cheese Steak poutine is great; as is the Country Style Chicken poutine. The menu is definitely inventive and fun -- it's especially an eye-opener for any traditional cheese-and-gravy purists who have yet to spice up their poutine experience. I'm also a fan of the decor. It's loud, it's crazy. It's red and black checkers, with the giant Smoke's dude plastered everywhere. There's a chalkboard -- or there was the last time I was there -- to write on. Revised review, not sure if the gravy formula changed or my MSG sensitivity has increased, but the gravy now makes me ill, cheese curds are no longer their fresh squeaky-ness they used to be. Sorry smokes, but if you can't disclose the ingredients in your product I can't eat it (asked if the gravy ingredients and the staff had no idea). read more
