first, i should mention that i used to sell Smooth Ambler spirits in Chicago, so i've been a cheerleader for the brand since they bought their first barrel of Very Special Old Scout and distilled their first Yearling bourbon. if you enjoy super premium bourbons from Indiana (MGP) and Tennessee (let's just say that the juice is from the other TN distillery that wasn't founded by Jack Daniel)... Smooth Ambler procures some of the most delicious whiskeys from America's most historic distilleries. i've opened dozens (upon dozens) of bottles of SA bourbon and have never met a bourbon lover who didn't appreciate it as some of the finest hooch available! now, my personal collection is well over 1,000 bottles, but i've drunk and/or shared every drop of SA's older bottlings. time to restock! luckily, i was able to taste through the entire current lineup when we visited the distillery. if you get a chance to buy a bottle of their single barrel bourbon (they were out when we were there), snap it up! an excellent dram and it's sure to become a valuable collectible. the full-proof West Virginia series is also dynamite and you can't beat the $50 price tag. if you like tours that let you get up close & personal, you'll love the scents & sights! our tasting & tour guide, cheryl, was amazing!!! we arrived a little bit before they opened, but she welcomed us right in, to use the restrooms and look around. the property is small, compared to most on the Kentucky bourbon trail, but their hospitality is unmatched. almost every employee (from the master distiller to the master blender) came out to say hello. the ONLY drawback to our visit was finding the place - their road sign budget must be $0. take your time trying to find it, and drive slowly through town, or you'll miss the turn! finally, be sure to ask if they have any barrel-aged maple syrup - it's so damn decadent! read more

Cute place, new surroundings, friendly folks. Free tasting - pleasantly surprised by that. Tried four kinds of whiskey from strong to mild. Two tips to note-bar is tight and we walked in at prime time (4:30 pm) so we had to squeeze in, and tasting is in one single plastic shot glass, bartender used same plastic glass for each whiskey tasting (sort of distorts flavors, always had a fresh glass when I tasted elsewhere) but won't complain as it was free. Prices are a bit high but the place is worth checking out. read more

This is a great stop for anyone interested in the bourbon industry. This is a small craft distillery where they are going through some major expansion. We arrived about 25 min before the tour and went into the tasting room. We were greeted by two women working there. They began to offer up the three tasting options for the day. Old scout bourbon, an American whiskey and Contradiction which is a mix of their bourbon and purchased whiskey. They were both very friendly, nice and informative. Another two guys came in while we were waiting and the four of us went on a short tour. Val gave the tour and she did a good job. We were unable to go to parts of the facility due to construction. Based on what she said, they are presently making about 4 barrels a day but hope to get closer to 10 after the expansion. I think this will be an exciting place to visit once they are finished with expansion and have more of their own bourbon bottled and ready for sale. It was a very nice way to spent some time on a cold winter afternoon. read more

Definitely worth the visit! We did not go on the weekend, so we did not get a tour, but it was not crowded so we could sit and take our time enjoying the samples. Sheryl (not sure of the spelling) did a fantastic job of describing each sampling, the business, and more. We enjoyed talking with her. The property and visiting area were very clean! Both Old Scout and Contradiction are smooth and rich. Never had Smooth Ambler until we found the distillery during our vacation adventures, but it will continue to be in our house as long as I can find it to order. The merchandise is well organized. We shared the coffee beans with our neighbor who plans to order more. Thanks for a great experience! read more

I'm still somewhat new to the bourbon scene, but I've been developing a real taste for it and was excited to be able to visit a distillery while on vacation to West Virginia. Smooth Ambler is a small and still rather new place out in the middle of nowhere, but it's worth the detour. Most of their bourbons are still sourced (that is, brought in from other distilleries), but they're working on their own and making interesting blends. The Old Scout 10 year and the Old Scout Straight Bourbon (both sourced) were excellent. My husband (much more of a gin drinker than I) was equally impressed with the barrel-aged gin. The most surprising find was their Whitewater Vodka, which had a light, fruity taste that is a refreshing change from your standard "taste-less" vodkas. The staff was super friendly and knowledgeable, and the tour (offered on Fridays and Saturdays) is brief, but informative. However, if you can't make the tour, only the tastings, you're not missing out on much. But definitely go for the tastings if you're in the area. read more

This is by far my favorite whiskeys on the market!! Everything I have tried by Smooth Ambler had been outstanding...bourbon, rye, whiskey, and blends, every single bottle has sustained and dependable quality. You can really tell the care and craftsmanship that goes into every barrel they rest, and spending time with Brandon and Val who were working when I went in, you get a sense that they truly enjoy the experience of sharing their spirits with their customers, both the bourbon and their joy if it! Best fact I learned: Every bottle is inspected, numbered and signed by two people in the bottling room, so that is real ink on those labels! And I just wanted to say a big gigantic thanks to Brandon especially for making this THE BEST brewery/distillery/winery tour I have been on, it validated my enthusiasm for what has always been my absolute favorite brand...and of course I need to thank my wife for having taken me...but Brandon AND Val were the best. read more

Whether you're a bourbon enthusiast or not, I highly recommend that you check this place out. I don't think that there is anything like it in the area. Considering that I'm from Kentucky, the home of the Bourbon Trail, I've been to a lot of distilleries. I must say that this place is top notch. Everything is impressively clean and staff are some of the most knowledgeable when it comes to spirits in general. The tastings consist of their vodka, hooch, gin and several bourbons. The high rye bourbon was my favorite. It was unlike any rye that I've ever tasted, in a good way. My husband's favorite was the ten year low rye, also not like any other bourbon. My husband is a bourbon fanatic. As I was trying to figure out what to get him for his birthday, I thought about things like date marked bottles and then the thought crossed my mind to plan a trip somewhere we've not been. So we ended up here a bit spur of the moment. We purchased the birth date marked bottleS and then some. We drove over four hours, why not stock up, right? I must admit that I reached out via email before we arrived, so we got sort of a VIP experience while we were there. Val was our amazing host/guide and I think she must have a P.H.D. in spirits and hospitality. We stopped and chatted with Paul, John and many of the amazing staff while we were there. They have this place down to a science, literally. I'm thinking that in a few years that you will have to wait in line to get into a place like this. The bourbon has certainly already caught on and you should consider yourself lucky if you can score a bottle in Kentucky or anywhere else. I certainly consider myself lucky for this experience. Move over Grey Goose, watch out Jack Daniels and Maker's Mark...Smooth Ambler is on the prowl and once your customers try the small batch, handcrafted spirits they are going to wonder why they haven't been buying true small batch spirits instead of factory liquor. I first heard about Smooth Ambler on Facebook when lots of friends kept liking them. So I had to try this stuff....crossed an entire state, drove 3 hours to the nearest placeI could buy some and bought a bottle each of the Vodka, Gin, and White Whiskey. The vodka was so good I bought some more bottles to hand out as Christmas presents and everyone loved it! The gin is pretty darn good too if you're into gin. Wasn't sure what to expect with the white whiskey, it's definitely not whiskey, but the start of whiskey...it hasn't been aged in a barrel yet. It was a bit harsh for my likes and is more of a moonshine than a whiskey....so I shoved some apples, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a dash of some other ingredients and let it age for a few weeks...warmed it up and it tasted like warm apple pie in liquid form. I'm a huge fan of whiskeys and bourbons so when SA released their first batch of Yearling Bourbon I made the 5 hour drive just so I could secure a couple bottles since there were only 350 produced. My wife bought two and I got two...so I saved two bottles of batch 1 as a proud trophy of an excellent WV made bourbon. When SA released Old Scout I noticed it was aged 5 years...but they had only been open two. They weren't hiding the fact that they "scouted" this great bourbon and great it is. I finished the batch 1 bottle the first time I opened it with two friends, it was that good. This is probably the best bourbon I've tasted and currently on my shelf I have Knob Creek Single Barrel, Four Roses Single Barrel, JD Single Barrel, Middlewest Spritis, 12 year Jameson, and an assortment of micro distilled bourbons and whiskeys and Old Scout is my favorite, especially at a $34 price point. The stillhouse at SAS is pretty cool too. Here you get to meet the owners, the guys who actually make the spirits and pour their heart and soul into it. It's a small operation with only 4 employees. There is a bar for tasting or ordering a mixed drink, a gift shop (got me a flask, shot glass, drinking glass, and hat), and of course where the magic happens--the stillhouse. On the tour John told us that Jack Daniels spills more whiskey moving their barrels to bottles than SAS makes in a complete run, talk about small batch! SAS makes an exceptional product, the owners are really good guys, and they're located in America's Coolest small town Lewisburg, WV. Stop by for a tour and a taste, you won't be disappointed. read more

Smooth Ambler Greenbrier Gin is great. Its not like any other gin I have had. I personally like to have it with ginger ale or tonic water. The small batch quality and uniqueness can be tasted in every glass. I also love that it is an American product. read more

4.5 really. What a nice find while tooling around Lewisburg on a cold winter's day. We went in for a tasting to warm our ears and wound up bringing home some of their fine 7 year bourbon and some pretty awesome Jamaican rum they carry. Also brought home some vodka blueberry chocolates, some caramel bourbon sauce, and a mixer for that awesome rum. The bourbon, to me, is the star of this place, and should they ever put their mind to it, this bourbon could be right up there among the best of them all. Smooth, caramel undertones, and nice and warm all the way down. Strong but not harsh at all, has an almost velvety feel. I am really looking forward to enjoying this. Next time we're up that way, I think I'm going to buy a few bottles for Christmas gifts. It's pretty special stuff. read more

My wife and I went to Ambler today we really enjoyed ourselves. Melissa was an excellent host. She is personable, knowledge, kind, and thorough in her work. She takes particular care to ensure the space is clean and she always wears a mask to protect herself and her customers. We bought a bottle of whiskey and would love to return. So while I was visiting Lewisburg and the Greenbrier Inn I also checked out this little distillery. They provide tours, but it was a little bit earlier than their posted times, so I decided to have a tasting and perhaps acquire a bottle or too before heading back to the Tarheel state. One of the owners happened to be there and helped me to a few tastings. Their selection is larger than I thought it would be and I was pleasantly surprised when he offered to show me around the place for a little private tour. It was truly fascinating to learn about how they got started and how their business is growing in addition to some of the experiments that are working on to create the next great blend of liquor. After the tasting and the tour I decided on the whiskey that had a taste like Markers Mark due to the wheat they use. Very smooth and well worth the price. I live in NC (have traveled, lived, and tasted all over the globe) and keep coming back to this place. I love it. The tour is great and the staff folks are sincere and exceptional. But most importantly, the bourbons etc. are delicious and evolving, and there is something for everyone in the tasting room. I'd recommend Smooth Ambler to anyone in the region. I called a week before arriving and spoke with a woman about their tours. She said they had one at noon and one at two and they take around an hour or so depending on questions. We first went to Organ Cave for their walking tour and it ran over around 10 minutes since there was an older couple who needed a lot of breaks. We called the distillery to get directions since the address would not show up in our gps. The girl could not give directions and sounded like she was drunk. We went back into Organ Cave gift shop and they gave us directions. We showed up at 12:05pm. I stood in their tasting room for around 5 minutes while the employee was talking to a couple and the other employee was standing in front of the cash register. Neither said anything to me and I had to approach them when the couple left. I asked her if we could join the noon tour. She then proceeded to tell me it was cancelled 5 minutes after noon but if she could of stopped her personal conversation long enough to ask me how she could help me then she would of known we were waiting for the tour. I left and my husband spoke with her. He said with there being two of us couldn't we get done with the tour faster than normal and she told him that if they don't start at noon it will run into the 2 o'clock tour. The parking lot was empty at this point and she was just using this as an excuse. My husband asked her if it was her just being lazy and didn't want to give the tour. She then told him to leave and she didn't want to give him a tour. The place is no bigger than a barn and would of taken 30 minutes max to do the tour. The employee then proceeded back into the tasting room were she and the other woman started drinking. I will never be back and waste my time again. I had expected to take the tour and then sit down in the tasting room and buy anything my husband wanted so they really missed out and I will never buy a smooth ambler product because of how horrible they acted. Don't waste your time or money here. Thankfully we went to Kirkwood Winery and Distillery and they made up for the horrible experience we had here. read more
