A bit on the pricey side but then it's in Franz Josef... 100% touristy. So all the stores here cashing in. This place has an interesting mix of Asian and western foods. We tried the Nasi Goreng and the Duck bao. Both were very tasty. Tried their curry puff, sausage roll and Chicken & Mushroom Fillo. All good. Only thing is that it was freezing in the restaurant! The doors were left open and hence very drafty. Had to keep my jacket on. Service was good. Though the bakery was a bit slow... in all pretty good food for the middle of no where!

What a pleasant surprise to find this place in a town that is so small. It's hard to find good food options in a place thats so small, let alone find good Asian food. We were stuck in Franz Joseph trying to wait out a storm when we found this place. It was certainly a fusion type restaurant, but after looking inside and seeing the semi open kitchen concept, I saw that many of them were actually Asian chefs. We sat down and were served by a very nice waiter who explained the menu to us and went over some of the popular dishes. We went with Pad See Ew with chicken and duck noodle soup. The noodles were cooked perfectly with just the right amount of spice. The portion was also generous. The duck noodle soup had a generous amount of duck inside, and the broth tasted of duck flavor. I also loved that both the dishes provided a bunch of vegetables. I will say that the prices are a bit steep, but I feel like this place is a decent bang for your buck. Regardless of where you go, everything is going to be expensive purely because of where Franz Joseph is. If I ever come back to this tiny town, I will for sure visit again.

Ate at Snakebite in Franz Joseph for a post-lunch hike. Although I really enjoyed the food it was definitely an unexpected food choice at a brewery. I ended up choosing the chicken pad thai ($24). The server was very accommodating and non-judgey with my rather uncommon food allergy. The pad thai was delicious. On the side was a slice of lemon, crushed peanuts, red pepper flakes, and a tablespoon of raw sugar. The portion size was way more than I could eat, even after a hike. They provided a to go box for my leftovers, which was nice. The restaurant also has a large outdoor patio area, mostly covered, with a mix of picnic benches and tables.

Local beers and Indonesian, Thai, and Korean food done right?! What a great combination!! We were so happy to find great food in the little town of Franz Josef! I had the Indonesian rice with prawns which was delicious! It came with shrimp chips and a fried egg which were excellent additions to the dish! The flavor was excellent! One of the others in our group had the Korean short ribs which he said were delicious as well! we ordered some dumplings to start, but those actually came out after our entrees; oh well, they were still good! All of our entrees did not come out at the same time, but all were served within about 5 minutes, so not terrible in terms of timing! The beer was excellent with an impressive selection of local brews on tap and some ciders as well for non-beer drinkers. This is a very relaxed, informal place. Utensils are in a container on the table, and customers walk to the register to pay their bill. Great place for a casual and tasty dinner in Franz Josef!

It's not the best asian food, but it's pretty good, especially for where it's located. Decent beer. Portion sizes are absolutely massive- be forewarned. You'll likely want to split a plate with someone unless you're a professional athlete and have just completed a 10 mile hike. I had a lychee martini, which seemed a bit watered down, but was still tasty. Decent beer selection. Hawker rolls are delicious. Good service. Kind people.

Great spot to kick back, grab a drink and have some great food. Personally, I picked from the Asian side of the menu and both were very good (crispy duck buns and dumplings of the day). They have a full bar, full service kitchen and also a counter of sandwiches/pastries/salads to eat in or take away.

As all the other reviews say, this place is the perfect place after a glacier hike! They have a really great selection of beers, food, and desserts. We got the Indonesian Nasi Goreng egg fried rice with prawns, mussel fritters, and calamari, which were all so tasty and flavourful! Not only was the food delicious, the service here was amazing too. We highly recommend this for those who are in Franz Josef and are craving some yummy Asian fusion food!

This place is good for a quick lunch. It's a counter service and they tend to focus on Asian food. Based on the few Thai/Asian food I tried I found this place just ok, but still good given the tiny town we are in. We shared the chicken kebab which is what I liked the most out of what we ordered. I really liked the peanut soya it came with. I ordered the green curry and thought the curry wasn't spicy enough and was a bit light to my taste too, but not bad. My wife went with the duck salad which was also just ok. The duck salad is more of the sweet side rather than the salty side due to the sauce. Finally we ordered the coconut fried banana for dessert. I would recommend skipping this order. It's not sugary enough for the amount of fat we are eating due to frying the banana. The desserts in their counter would be a better choice given that they had many tasty choices.

Got the pork cheek rendeng for dinner last night (make sure they make it to your spiciness level. Ours was too spicy for me!) we also shared a chicken larb salad. It was more like fluffy ground chicken with red onion, lime sauce. Sooo good. Then we stopped in for a snack! They had passionfruit and coconut panna cotta! I got the dessert while the hubby got a beer. I Berry cider was pretty good! Not too sweet.

We heard there was a Maori show with dinner so we booked reservations. To our surprise, we were the only people in the restaurant for the show! It may be because it was a rainy day in the middle of winter in Franz Josef, but we fully enjoyed the food and show! We were able to engage with the Maori singer and dancers and we were essentially serenaded by them as we enjoyed our drinks! The food was delicious as well.. we ordered a Burmese noodle dish with prawn and pork belly dish. We ordered a lemon mint dessert with coconut crackling (cracker) that was an amazing blend of flavors! Needless to say, we got amazing service with delicious food and it's too bad all the other tourists missed out tonight. Come visit this place on Tuesday / Thursday nights for the Maori show and dinner!

Be sure to check out the deli case AND the menu as the deli case had some awesome Panini options. The fritters were actually 4 XL patties and the wasabi mayo enhances the flavor. Our wasabi mayo was spicy but not hot-very good balance. The pork bao buns had a great, slightly vinegar-ish flavor. The chicken wings were honey-mustard flavor. They do a lively lunch biz but cleared out by 2:00 pm. The micro brew draft selection was good from two-three different breweries. The berry cider was pleasing but I recommend a half-pint as it can be overpoweringly sweet in a large quantity. Can't wait to try their caramel slice! read more

Had the duck noodle soup which really hit the spot! Great flavor and warmed me for the winter day. They have a nice ambiance also and a good amount of seating to relax for a while. My friend had pan fried noodles which were also pretty tasty. read more

Very fun atmosphere and great food! We got the pad Thai & egg fried rice which were both delicious. We splurged on dessert and got the chocolate strawberry pie which again great. Strongly recommend. read more

The Indonesian Neal geocentric egg fried rice is gluten dairy free. Never expect a small town would have such high quality food. Really authenic. It is little bit spicy. Asian market salad with lime nam Jim dressing is wonderful. $12 for a salad is expensive read more

My husband and I had dinner here after a long day exploring Fox Glacier a town over. I had the signature dish "Beef Rendang" and it was surprisingly delicious! It was creamy and tender and just what I needed at the end of a cold, winter day. It came with a very generous portion of rice. The service was generally good, not too pushy. The atmosphere was clean and modern. It was a good option for us in a small town with only a few options. We love asian food and would go back here if we were passing through. read more
Like most travelers, we were visiting Franz Joseph for the glacier. After a long day of traveling and hiking, we asked our glacier guide and staff in our group where to eat dinner. Unequivocally, they exclaimed "SNAKE BITE." That settled it for us. We did not expect much from this small town but lesson learned. Our food was absolutely delicious. In fact, this meal is perhaps the most memorable of our trip! My friend had the recommended duck stew and I had Nana's famous muscle fritters. The stew was savory, hearty, so flavorful... just what one wanted after spending a day on the ice. The fritters were perfect... not oily. The flavor was amazing. The sauce served with them was a wasabi base with perhaps basil/cilantro. The flavors were so complimentary and unique. I think about this meal so often. Do not miss it. (They also have excellent Happy Hour deals...) read more

Wonderful space with a wide variety of well-prepared south-east Asian staples. The beef rendang was very tasty, and they had a limited list craft brews from around the south island on tap. A great dinner after a glacier hike. read more

Terrible food and service Went for a beer and burger. They tried to charge me 20% on my special because I wasn't a local. Total top off. And the burger was poor quality--lots of gristle.... read more

Good Asian fusion food. We spent here a rainy afternoon that turned into an evening, sampling small plates and having drinks. Definitely recommend if you want a good creative meal. The atmosphere is very relaxed, the staff doesn't rush you and doesn't try to turn the tables quickly. read more

Great place to stop for a bite. Amazing food variety for such a small place. I tried the famed green mussels and they were amazing with local white wine. Great place to people watch and enjoy a respite from being a tourist. Very friendly wait staff. read more

Definitely some issues here... Name has changed and now called Snake Bite. After a hike we stopped in for food during a not very busy time of 2pm... Put in our order and nearly 40 minutes later we had to go up and ask about our order. Apparently it never went through and they were out of ingredients. We asked just for the starter but 15 minutes later found it had not been started. After waiting for an hour the wife and I were starting to not feel good about the place. No offers for some bread or something to tide us over until the orders were ready when all we really needed was food. We paid for our drinks and left. They offered free drinks but what we had all the liquids our bladders could possibly manage. Hopefully the place gets their communication between front of house and kitchen figured out and staff trained better. They need a host that cares about the customer experience. The ginger beer concoction was refreshing however, 2 star for that. read more

After a very long hike at the glacier, my wife and I stopped by for a quick late-afternoon bite ahead of dinner. There's clearly some kind of staffing issue here; the sign outside said to wait to be seated, but no one working at the restaurant even acknowledged our presence outside until we went up to the bar and asked to be seated. Once we were there, our order was taken slowly (I walked up to the bar and put it in), and at least the food came out quickly. Once we were done, I then had to make the journey up to ask for the check, which I just paid at the cashier promptly. Overall, from a service perspective - clearly not impressed. As for the food, it's a mix of different Asian favorites (I spotted Chinese, Thai, and other south Asian-inspired dishes) along with typical New Zealand fare. We got the duck rolls and the roti canai, and there's no doubt that the latter was better. The coconut dipping sauce gave the chicken a subtle fruity flavor with a tinge of spiciness, and the roti canai itself was crisped perfectly and was not too thick. As for the duck buns...I have had better. The duck is okay, but the hoisin sauce is pretty much nonexistent, and the buns were far too big and fell apart too easily. Drinks were not much better - for a brewery / brewpub, I don't understand how you have none of your own beer available and only a handful of the others available (along with your big-label macros). I ended up going for a Spring & Fern lager, which for lagers was alright but lacks the oomph of the paler ales that I prefer. My wife went with an iced chai, which was okay - more milky if anything, with the chai flavor almost not there. There aren't a whole bunch of spots in town - Franz Josef is just a few blocks off the highway - but I was less than impressed with my experience, particularly from a service perspective and from a brewery having none of its beer. The food was a mixed bag. I had higher hopes going in than I had coming out. read more

Snakebite was an overall meh.. Food was an artistic and well presented average tasting experience. The servers were nice, but not the most expeditious or attentive with the drink refills and that kind of stuff. Overall, an almost average experience. read more

I came to the Snakebite on my own for an early dinner. When I arrived the staff ignored me so I seated myself at a table. The waitress was serving the people at the adjacent table so I figured she'd greet and serve me next. I was wrong. I sat there and watched other people come into the restaurant where they were greeted and given menus. Finally a male staff member (perhaps a bartender?) noticed that I'd been completely ignored and he came and served me. I ordered the vegetarian pad Thai and it cost a hefty $24 and didn't come with any vegetables! Just noodles, tofu and egg. How very disappointing. read more

We went to Snake Bite twice during our short stay in Franz Josef. Our food was delicious both times! I tried their beef cheek curry the first time and it was very tender. It was a bit too spicy for me (I don't eat much spicy food) but they were able to make it more mild and it was delicious! For lunch, I tried the duck noodle soup which was perfect after a glacier hike!! Would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone going to that area. read more

Surprisingly the best food we've had in New Zealand! Had the beef cheek rendang and duck noodle soup and then came back the next day for the chicken pad see ew, seafood laksa, and fried banana for dessert. Amazing food and service! Tourist prices but everything is in this area and it was definitely worth the value in portion and flavor. Highly recommended! read more

Staff was friendly enough, but food was not good at all. Hamburgers had a funky taste. Soup and kebab were OK at best. Stay away from the red meat if you stumble upon this place. read more

I absolutely love this restaurant. I am living in a nearby town and my boyfriend and I always go here for date night. I love the Thai Green Curry but everything on the menu is SO tasty! Also grab one of their beers to chase down your delicious food. It is one of the best craft beers I have experienced in New Zealand yet! read more

Was pretty slow. Service was bad, waitress took order and took off. Cook served food. My fish burger ended up a egg sandwich with some fish in it. Never could tell waitress about it she never came back. Told gal at counter, she said she hated them as well. Then told me now I know not to Order it again. 2 bites cost me 20$, had to stop somewhere else to eat lunch. Thanks read more

This was a great find in small town Franz Josef! Judging based on atmosphere I most likely would have gone else where but reading the reviews (and recently being in Thailand) we decided to try it out. The fried rice (can't say the name), Asian Market salad, and coconut chicken Hawker roll were so flavorful. We like spicy food and usually get side eye when asking for more spice and they happily obliged making everything spicy for us. This is a must do and good for a change from pub food. read more

Service is good. Neither of us had drinks so can't say about that. Had the vege tofu coconut salad which was quiet good: nice coconut fried crisp on the outside with nicely flavors salad. Also had the green curry which was creamy, but lacked a nice spice that we would have liked. Banana coconut dessert was very nice as well. Not too many vegetarian options but there were a few things to choose from. read more
