While in Scotland we were looking for a spot that was open early and had a decent breakfast. It's a hole in the wall but there's some seating. Pricing was affordable however I'm not sure why we were charged way more than the posted prices. I notice most places in Scotland do charge a bit more if you're eating in but this was almost double. The girl behind the register wasn't really friendly but I guess it was too early. The vegan breakfast was quite tasty. The vegan sausage didn't even taste vegan. The breakfast sandwich was on a roll with 3 items you can pick but we were charged $3 per item. You can add ketchup or other condiments to it since it can be dry. Overall a decent spot for a quick breakfast at 7am. read more

Definitely a place for the locals. A no-frills, CHEAP cafe with a bit of everything on the menu. Great for on the go, not much of a seating area. This place was recommended to me by a friend who went there during his university days. The breakfasts are filling and the food is great. I loved the all day breakfast, as it was enough for me for the day. What was also nice was the fact that I could change one thing to substitute something else (so I asked for haggis instead of black pudding). This location is like a hole-in-the-wall type, where many construction workers go. But the women behind the counter are kind and informed and they seem to really love their jobs. I'm not sure what all fuss is about with Snax. Sure, it's as cheap as anything you'll ever get, but it tastes cheap too. The eggs are disgusting, the sausages tasteless and the ketchup seems to tastes like a mixture of vinegar and soap. I know people go here for hangover food because, at under three quid for a breakfast, you can't really argue. But you know, I feel like it's worth spending a little bit extra and getting something a bit better. I've been to the bigger brother of this snacks on Buccleuch Street a couple of times and my experience was no better. This place is just the same, but with fewer seats. Cheap, quick and right where I needed them to be. I had a ham and cheese panini which I enjoyed, plus a big bottle of Barrs lemonade which was perfect for the train journey I was about to get on. It can be all too easy to be blissfully unaware of Snax, tucked in behind Princes Street and it was only by chance that I ended up there at 6.30am in the morning after a long night on the town, finishing off at neighbouring pub Penny Black. A night of drinking made me feel ravenous but I was fortunate that I was sober enough to enjoy a full cooked breakfast for the very modest price of £2.70. Snax offers fantastic value for money with 2 sausages, 2 rashers of bacon, 2 eggs, black pudding and a roll all included in the full breakfast price. The café assistant was also kind enough to give us extra eggs and rashers because he had cooked too many. Further, my vegetarian friend who had the vegetarian cooked breakfast was also in agreement that Snax offers great food for a very good price. After having visited and enjoyed the other Snax on Buccleuch St, I was expecting good things from this branch as well. However, the experience just did not meet expectations. This branch is a very small café, with minimal seating space. I assume most people take away anyway, but it's nice to be able to sit and enjoy breakfast or lunch during a busy day in the city centre. Prices, like at Buccleuch St, are amazing. You can get a full breakfast sub £4 and morning rolls sub £2. It's pretty unbeatable, particularly for somewhere right in the heart of the city. Also very good is the quality of the food. My bacon was freshly cooked for my roll and it went down a treat. Unfortunately, I was not impressed by the cleanliness of the Snax at all. I'm not generally fussy about this, and am happy to eat in greasy spoons of all kinds. However, this branch is quite grimy, and this contributes to an all round cold atmosphere, especially compared to the other branch. However, the great prices and tasty food earns this café a rating of A-OK. read more

Having previously given the Buccleuch Street branch of Snax Cafe a 5 star review, I find it hard to believe that this can be the same company. To summarise: Buccleuch Street do good food, good tunes and friendly vibes. West Register Street on the other hand do mediocre food, awful tunes and bad vibes. I was starving, so paid them a visit and ordered a panini. It was ok, nothing to write home about. The eating area was a bit of a mess and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a while. They had annoying chart music on. I wouldn't go as far as to say the staff were rude, but they seemed more interested in having a loud and explicit conversation with a friend over the counter, the content of which I can't repeat in a Yelp review. Having said all that, I would probably return, but only because they don't seem to have much competition around that part of town so options are limited. But as a fan of the other Snax Cafe, this branch is disappointing. read more
