In the front there are toys to play with on site, as well as to check out, in addition to the themed bins of toys and materials in the back on shelves. They are arranged generally by age range/skillset. There's also a selection of books, CDs, DVDs, etc on everything from activity ideas to baby sign language and pretty much anything in between. These are just the free resources. For a nominal yearly fee you can expand your access to other materials such as a Cricut machine, laminating machine, and a die cutter, for which they have a multitude of dies and cartridges to play with. Foam sheets and paper are available on the cheap for whatever you can come up with. For example, I saw a die for a child's size crown. Foam sheet crowns, anyone? AWESOME! It's an amazing resource for anybody with children, but I could see it being especially useful to home schoolers and teachers alike. This is one of three locations in Onslow County. I have not been to any of the others, but I like the feel of this one--quiet and laid back.

They changed the parking to the next street and you aren't to enter at the flags like the ticket directions told you. I took a guided tour and learned about the Foy family that had a peanut and sweet potato farm. But the more important part of the story was about the Gullah Geechee people. I had first learned about them when I was in Beaufort SC. But there is a corridor that goes from Wilmington to St. Augustine, FL to protect the Gullah Geechee culture. Poplar Grove was built by the Gullah slaves who were very skilled. 59 lived on the property. They took care of the construction; lumber milling; brick making; tending to the livestock and crops as well as domestic chores. They need to be the focus of the tour.

I'm required to check in with the visitors centers at each base to get access so I've been in at least 20 over the past 3 years. I'm disappointed in Camp Lejeune. As one of the larger bases I've been to, this visitor center is one of the slowest and least friendly. There were 6 staff members there and in the 30+ minutes it took me to get through I only saw 2 doing any apparent work. Fortunately there was only two people ahead of me or I am sure it would have been an hour or more to get the 5 min clearance I needed to get through the gate. I've seen a trend. When visitors centers are staffed by civilians they are never as friendly or welcoming as those staffed by military personnel. They are also always slower. Camp Lejeune keeps that trend alive. At least I'm good for a few years before having to go back.

Due to the drought, country ramps close to our home in Richlands are too shallow for our bass boat. I asked around & folks suggested we check the put in here at the Landing a check out. Last week was a gorgeous day so we road into town to see if the Landing & its ramps would be good to use. Our regular fishing ramp was in Elizabeth City at Halls Creek. In our experience, the Halls Creek ramp was our favorite so I knew anything down here had big gills to fill, however, I found the Landing more than acceptable. There is a pull off boat set up section, a plethora of parking, ramps that don't remind me that I havent yet drawn up my last will and testament, picnic tables AND restrooms!! Restrooms y'all! Because hey, I am not one to hang my Lord given big bootie over the side of my bass boat. If it after all, a BASS boat, not ASS boat. Plus, the added bonus of being close to The Kettle diner. In EC, we would always stop for lunch at Bojangles because Chesapeake (at the time) was probably the one city in the south without a Bo, so, I'm looking forward to catching all the bass, dining at The Kettle and possibly placing a geocache along the river. Oh, I forgot to mention that it's FREE. How can ya wrong when the opportunity to outbass your hubby comes free!

Dudley, 1789-1855. Governor, 1836-41, the first in North Carolina elected by popular vote, first president of Wilmington and Weldon Railroad. Birthplace was 2 miles west." Online, there is more information. "In 1811 Dudley was elected to the first of two terms in the state House and in 1814 he returned as a state senator. During the War of 1812, he served as colonel of the Onslow militia that was sent to protect Wilmington against a threatened invasion. Shortly after the war Dudley moved to Wilmington and quickly rose to political prominence. He was elected as a borough representative to the legislature in 1816, 1817, and again in 1834 and 1835. Since one political party dominated North Carolina politics between 1815 and 1832, Dudley was designated a Republican, but he disagreed with national leadership. Elected to fill the seat in Congress vacated by the death of Gabriel Holmes in 1829, he found his views incompatible with those of President Andrew Jackson and his followers. Dismayed by the tactics of the president and the compromising nature of the Congress, Dudley refused to run for a second term." "Dudley's return home coincided with a groundswell in the movement to awaken North Carolina from its "Rip Van Winkle" slumber. He assumed a pivotal role in the formation of the Whig party that challenged the Democratic leadership by supporting constitutional reform, stronger banks, railroad construction and other internal improvements, and education.
