Schwartz's tends to be place highlighted by travel bloggers and social media influencers, but digging deeper to see where the locals go, Snowdon seemed to be a popular choice. The one day I had a car, we went here. We found pay street parking immediately in front. Once we went in, we noticed it wasn't too busy, maybe 3/4 full. Certainly no line ups. It's a classic looking diner that probably hasn't changed in decades. We tried the smoked meat platter which roughly equates to two sandwiches. Sometimes iconic foods are overhyped, but I can honestly say their smoked meat is worth a try. It was smoky and ultra tender, so I can understand why it's so popular. My only reference point is Katz's in NYC, and I would give the edge to Snowdon because it's equally good, but no long lines and more reasonable price. The fries aren't bad either. Service was very good. Our server was a long time employee, was very polite and did everything right. Overall, a worthwhile visit. Great example of Montreal smoked meat with less tourists. Comparison to Schwartz: this restaurant is super clean. The smoked meat is definitely different. Schwartz's meat is more dry with deep smoky flavor. The smoked meat here is so tender and moist. Tasting like corned beef. Smoked meat poutine was a larger portion with more gravy (yum) more cheese but a little less meat. The coleslaw was entirely different from Schwartz but it tasted good. It taste so good esp.if it's hot. Parking in front of the deli shop is not allowed but you can park on the side street. Wanted to try a place where the locals get their smoked meat. I'm a benedict fiend so I wanted to try the smoked meat benny. I'm not sure how they make the hollandaise sauce but it seemed almost mayonnaisey which I wasn't crazy about, just different than I am used to. Highly recommend this spot when visiting Montreal. It's right on Decarie, and a short walk from the Snowdon metro station. Definitely worth visiting for smoked meat that they cut up fresh when you order. The smoked meat is comparable or better (depending on who you ask) to Schwartz without the massive wait/lineup. Today I find myself at Snowdon Deli, a very much traditional Jewish deli. My mission? Well I'm in search of the elusive famed Montreal smoked meat. Before we jump into this, I'll go ahead and address the elephant in the room. Yes I know this is not Schwartz. Their queue is insane, not that I've let that stop me from good food before. But I will tell you what has always been my road block, cash only. I NEVER have American dollars, yet alone Canadian. Lucky for me, Yelp nation has clearly made it known that Snowdon is every bit as good, or even better than those other guys. Back to the subject at hand. Snowdon features classics like knish, matzah ball soup, latke, and even liver! Their even baking there own caked and pies. But of course smoked meat is king. Very similar to our American pastrami on rye, the sandwich features mounds of meat and a slab of mustard. What's great is even though the meat may appear to be overwhelming at first glance, it's super tender, making wrapping your mouth around this sucker quite achievable. The meat itself is flavorful and the mustard only adds additional punch to the flavor profile. A great sandwich overall. Also tried the fries, which many mentioned were not to be missed. Although I love the crispy texture, there is a sweet component that I am not at all used to being in fries. Personally not a fan. I totally get why this is a thing.
