It started off well with colourful displays which made good backgrounds for photos! - and of course lots of animals in tanks to look at and discover all sorts about. There was also a tank which was more open, where they sometimes held demonstrations and allowed the children to pet the stingrays and smaller sharks etc. But then it ended rather abruptly. We came out the other side into a gift shop, just when we were really getting into it... and after the gift shop was the exit! Overall quite disappointing for the prices. We only bought a shot glass as a souvenir because everything was rather overpriced.

What really makes WMZ worth a visit is the stunning location, set high up above Colwyn Bay with views across the surrounding area and the sea at Rhos-on-Sea. Having said that it is still a zoo and the animals are kept in cages. Most of the animals are small including lots of little monkeys and there are a lot of reptiles as well although there are leopards, crocodiles and ocelots if you want something a bit more carnivorous. The downside for me was the cost of admission which I felt was way too high given the size of the zoo. On the plus side you could buy tubs of nuts and grapes to feed to the monkeys which my daughter really enjoyed. It's probably worth a look if you've got some cash to spare.

Full disclosure: I've never been to an animalarium or zoo in the U.K. All of my experience with zoos has been in the U.S. This zoo is filthy, dated, and very sad. There is a wide variety of animals there, from Sheep and Goats to Lions, Linx, and exotic monkeys. None of the enclosures seemed big enough for the animals. This was especially noticeable for the Leopard, Crocodiles, large snakes, and Lions. I was also concerned about safety. The big cats were separated from the public by little more than chicken wire and there was one disinterested, young, female employee with the lions. Moreover, the enclosures were dirty, stinky, and overrun with weeds. I felt sorry for all of the animals. Allegedly, all of these animals are rescued and rehomed and my two year old enjoyed the animals, so 2 stars seems appropriate.

They have combined a new learning and activity space within the aquarium; the Living Laboratory. In this part everyone can get up close to fish and other sea life in special low-level tanks. As interesting as aquariums are, they can often be quite boring but with the staff running regular demonstrations for the visitors and a chance to observe and properly get involved so for that reason it has to be one of the better ones that I have visited. There are many displays and activities in the Living Laboratory and they have tried their best to emphasise links between the live specimens and the museum's historic collections. Video conferencing facilities are also available, this allows to link through to behind the scenes activities, events in the Treasure House Theatre and other parts of the museum.
