Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours exceeded my expectations and provided me with a bucket-list experience that will be a lasting memory. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Motorhead (retired sled dog). He was so friendly, sweet, and engaging. The shop space is open and offers a slue of gift shop items and rentable gear (snow boots and snow pants are a must!). Clean bathrooms are available because once you get to the top of the mountain, there are only porta-potties. I loved my dog team (Ghost, Poblano, Ivar, Mayday, Gomez, and Kannicky). They are definitely professionals and they commit to running. However, when we had some breaks, they were very sweet and enjoyed positive affirmation and pets. Driving the sled is more physically intense than I expected. You will need to do some running up the hill with the dogs. However, the thrill of the experience, wind in your hair, and breathtaking views is beyond words. In my experience, Snowy Owl treats their dogs well. I appreciate their use of colored collars to signal whether the dogs are shy or overly friendly. One of my tour guides for another excursion affirmed this sentiment as well and spoke of them in high regards. This is a must-do experience (expensive, but well worth it). What an adventure! We had the greatest time learning to mush and the dogs were all so loving and happy. Our guide was patient and fun, the trails were groomed, yet with powder for a great ride. We had an arrival time of 8am and the bus left sharply at 8:20, don't be late as you definitely don't want to drive up to the mountain on your own. Be on the look out for big horned sheep on the way up. The lady at the counter was very friendly and helpful. There is equipment to rent, except for goggles. Our bus driver was fun, very careful and cautious while driving in such snowy conditions. There is a photographer that will take a photo of you at take off and return, the photos are 40.00 but well worth it, especially if you are the one mushing. We all did mushing and found it to be such an amazing experience and would definitely do it again. My daughter and I booked a snow dog sled tour and kennel tour with Snowy Owl Dog Sled Tours and, unfortunately, our experience left much to be desired. We originally scheduled the tour for Sunday, as we were arriving in Banff on Friday. However, the manager emailed asking if we could switch to Saturday since they had nothing planned for Sunday. We rearranged our plans and agreed to Saturday. As part of the booking, I opted for the combo package, which included the kennel tour. The sign-up process involves a mobile form, which I completed electronically. On Saturday, we arrived at the main office (109-829 10th Street, Canmore) only to find no one there, despite the sign saying they opened at 8 AM (Google said 9 AM, which added to the confusion). The manager had emailed previously asking if we could do an 8:30 AM tour at Boundary Ranch, but no clear directions were provided. As first-time visitors, we had no idea where Boundary Ranch was relative to the main office or the kennels. The manager eventually showed up just before 9 AM, and instead of offering helpful advice, she rudely told us we were at the wrong location and there was no way we'd make the sled tour. She then printed out the agreement form, showing the Boundary Ranch address that wasn't clearly communicated earlier. I was instructed to fill out a refund form, which I did, only to be denied two weeks later because I had signed the agreement form. We ended up doing the kennel tour, which was the highlight of the day. Mitch, who led the tour, was fantastic, and it was nice to meet the dogs. For the kennel tour, you meet at the main office and then follow them to the kennels. Some much-needed improvements: 1. Clarify Location Information: When communicating about Boundary Ranch, clearly state that it's a different location and include the full address in the email. 2. Fix Signage and Hours: At the main location, correct the posted open times and add clear signage with directions to Boundary Ranch for sled tours. 3. Streamline the Process: The number of emails and forms involved was excessive--9 emails just to sign up for two people, not counting the refund request. Simplify this for customers, especially those using mobile phones. Overall, the poor communication and confusing process made this a frustrating experience that cost us hundreds of dollars. We opted for guided sled since we didn't know what to expect and had no idea how fast the sled were. I would definitely recommend Snowy Owl Sled tour. I checked off one of my bucket list today. Awesome is an understatement! This was the highlight of my trip to Banff! All of the employees were very pleasant and communicative. Everyone from the front desk ladies to the hilarious bus driver to the guides. You purchase a dog sled either with a guide or you can choose self guided. My husband and I took a self guided sled because that was the last available on the day we needed. Upon arriving to their office in Canmore, we were given the waiver papers to sign and the option to rent snow boots and pants. Then we loaded up onto the bus and were driven to the Spray Valley area for our sled tour. The guides were very friendly and informative. We were allowed to go meet the dogs and take pictures. They were already harnessed and excited to go! We then were given safety instructions and for those who were doing self guided, instructions on how to drive the sled were also explained. Everyone was assigned a sled and we were off! The guides are always nearby in case you need help. We had one who was two sleds ahead and she would stop to give us a warning about sharp turns ahead. The dogs get a small break halfway through the tour and you can switch out driving with your partner if you like. After arriving back at the starting point, you can help feed the dogs after their run. Then you get to gather around a fire, have a snack, and apple cider. Hop back on the bus to return to Canmore and that is everything! It's about 3 hours in total if you arrive early to start the paperwork. This also includes bus travel time. I'll just start with this was the HIGHLIGHT of our trip. My wife and I booked the self driven sled. And it was incredible. For arriving, make sure you are there AT LEAST 45 minutes early. At the 45 min mark they were calling and asking where I was (fortunately we were almost there). Parking is street parking (and you pay online or at the pay stations). Service from the group was incredible. They normally charge for warmer boots but because it was so cold they gave us them for FREE. (Even if they don't offer them for free you should upgrade for the warmer boots). And then my main guide Will was so helpful and personable. When I mentioned my fingertips were kind of cold, he gave me a pair of his mittens that he said would work better (and they did). There was a total of 11 sleds with us. Every 3rd sled had a guide on it, and throughout the journey they stop and give us instructions or tips to make it through the next section. The views were incredible. The experience was awesome - truly a once in a lifetime type experience. The halfway mark of our trip was a path we drove on the frozen lake. This is where we stopped, got pictures, played with the dogs. Will even took some photos for us on our phones. The halfway mark was also where you could switch who was driving if both people wanted to drive. If you are nervous about driving a sled, don't be worried. The dogs are pros and do most of the work. But if you can make a few calls (which they will teach you) and help run a bit when going uphill, then you will do great. Top notch. Booking a tour on the phone went well. Abby assisted me and it wasn't like pulling teeth as some bookings are for companies over the phone. The electronic paperwork was easy to fill out and submit to secure the reservation. I booked round trip transportation from Banff to Snowy Owl's location and it went smoothly from pick up to drop off. In hindsight, we could have driven ourselves to Canmore because we have a rental car but it was stress-free doing it the way we did. We wore our own winter gear, but cold weather clothing was available to rent. Their office facilities were clean and nice. Bathrooms are available. The bus ride up to where we met the dogs was pleasant and without issue. The dogs were the stars of the show but the guides deserve props as well. The guides were friendly and well-spoken. They communicated instructions thoroughly and efficiently. The landscape we rode through was majestic and breathtaking, absolutely gorgeous all snow-covered. Snowy Owl Sled Dog tours was some of the most fun we've had on our short visit in Canada. The instructors were amazing, informative and very patient with everyone. Before our ride we had a moment where we could walk up and pet all the dogs, after we were instructed on how to operate the sleds. From there we had some super excited and charismatic pups pull us through the snowy hills and you could tell they had a blast doing it. Every time we would pause the dogs grew impatient and wanted to roll, tugging at the anchored sleds. They loved it, and you could tell these pups were very well taken care of. When they're ready for retirement they are put up for adoption! My wife and I got to take turns directing the pups with our awesome instructor. It was a very laid back and exiting adventure. Afterwards we were able to sit around a fire, drink hot cider and purchase some printed pictures with an accompanying USB flash drive. This was the highlight of our trip! Everyone from beginning to end was so helpful and knowledgeable and made us feel so comfortable. We were a party of 3, so we did the self driven sled. I recommend booking ahead of time. We almost didn't get in but found a slot the day before we left. My 20 year old son guided us. They give proper instructions prior to the journey. It was so breathtaking especially going across the frozen lake. The dogs were so sweet and love their job. They got lots of love and attention from us. You can't come to Banff without doing this, at least once. At the end we had brownies, hot cider and a bonfire. If you are ever in Banff, please do a dog sled tour. It is one experience you do not want to miss. This experience was one of the more costly adventures that we planned but I felt it was way worth it. First off, dress comfortably. Read the the disclaimer, go on the website, look at the FAQs. There is a lot of information there so that you and your crew will be prepared. You check in, take about a 30 min bus ride up and get to see some amazing and breath taking views. After unloading you get to meet the dogs and the mushers give you instructions. It was our first time so we did the instructor led sled. The staff are all very attentive, funny, friendly, and educated on not just the dogs, but the environment and sledding. We were so impressed that they knew the names of all the dogs and they have well over 180 of them. We had 7 pups working hard to pull our sled and got to know them all. Though I did forget some of their names... These dogs are amazing and all have their own special characteristics and personalities. You can play and feed them and of course take pictures. The views you get from the sledding are the best part. We visited in March so the sun was out and I'm the cold was doable and not too harsh (either that or we were dressed properly). They also have a sweet treat we had brownies and nice hot apple cider after the tour to be enjoyed by the fire. Loved being a passenger and also a musher. This is one experience I will never forget! The most AMAZING experience! Definitely should be on everyone's bucket list. ESPECIALLY if you are a dog lover and enjoy the outdoors. Now to start, it is pretty pricey. But with the amount of care I'm sure these dogs need and just the experience alone it makes it all worthwhile. The tour starts with a pickup from your hotel (we stayed at the Rimrock) and about a 45 min drive to the start of the experience. Once you arrive they send you to the sleds to give the dogs some love before a quick instructional on how to ride. You get pretty overwhelmed because there are at least 100 dogs just waiting for some attention! It was awesome. When the ride starts some sleds have guides and others don't. Ours did and I liked it because he gave us a little background on the area and dogs, etc. I'm sure the other sled had fun as well thought because they got the full feel as to how to drive their sled. We did the 4 hour tour which included a lunch over a hot fire and we got to feed our dogs too! Just overall an amazing experience and I would definitely even do it again. We loved our tour! We booked a month in advance for the busy weekend before new years and got one of the last self-driven sleds for two. It was ah-mazing and the dogs were all so sweet. We came from Banff and pick up/drop-off was included. We made a quick pit stop in Canmore where we got some free dog treats for the pups. You can also rent clothes here if needed but if you follow the instructions provided beforehand you should be okay. The tour itself was extremely organized and super easy to understand what to do when on the sled. We had Ian guiding us and he did a great job. My only suggestion is that if you book and you're on the fence for doing a longer tour, do the longer one! We had so much fun! I was honestly fairly disappointed with this experience. But first, let's start with the good. The guides were full of energy and had great personalities. We also got to pet the dogs which was awesome because who doesn't love dogs. Finally, the views atop the mountain are breathtaking. On the negative, you spend 30 minutes in a school bus going up and then down the mountain each way. You get 30 min of instruction, one hour of riding, and then 30 minutes of hot cider and cheap dollar store snacks. Then, you are offered to pay $40 for two professional photos taken while sledding. When you factor into account the $450 paid, it's only 1 hour of experience with the dogs. And then you are nickel and dimed for photos. Overall, for the cost, meh. read more

Hands down, THE best experience I have gone through! Even before the trip, the employees at Snowy Owl were so kind and genuine when helping me with any questions I had as well as the payment process. The website says to book a month in advance, but my fiance and I were able to spontaneously book this trip fewer than 5 days in advance! When we got to the Snowy Owl office around 8:15AM, I asked about renting some gloves, because I had just lost one. Although they didn't have any glove rentals, the employees went out of their way to even let me use some of their lost and found gloves as well as find the correct size for me. They even let me borrow 2 pairs of gloves because they were too big by themselves! When we got to the trail, the first half hour included with playing with the huskies as well even taking pictures! The guides also instructed us on basic commands and instructions on how to drive the sled as well as communicate with the dogs pulling the sleds. My fiancee and I were both able to drive the sled as well as ride in the sled and relax. Be warned, there is some "running" involved, which is more so helping the dogs pull the sled (and rider) up whenever going uphill. Afterward the guides prepared us a bonfire with snacks and apple cider to warm up. Along with reading how Snowy Owl treats all 190 dogs humanely, I absolutely loved being a part of the dog sledding. (How much more Canadian can you get?) The price is around $200CAD per person, but compared to other places and considering the whole experience itself, this is worth the money! The tour was ok. They promised two hours. Turned out that included time to get oriented with all the types of dogs, time to unhook the dogs, time to wait for a couple of groups to get lined up and posed for their photos, and time to wait for photos to be developed that they would sell for $30 (2 5x7s) This was all just ok, as the ride was good tho short, and there were way too many people on the trip. I think we had 8 or 10 sleds going all at once, with others coming as we were leaving. But, what chaffed me the most was that I upgraded the package to 'gold' to get my own sled with only one other person. This brought the trip to $450+tax for one hour of sledding. Then as we were so light, they took off one of our dogs so we wouldn't be so fast--and we weren't fast. That's why I wanted to be only two. In fact, I didn't notice a difference between those that paid the regular price--almost all of them had only two per sled. Some of the bigger folks could not have put three on their sled (including driver) as they wouldn't have gone very far, sleds weren't big enough! We had great snow as it turned out. Be careful if the snow is old, or it's been warm, or its a low snowfall year as route wouldn't have been as nice -- it is just up and down an old logging road. I hear there are better operators in the Banff Lake Louise area so check them all out before you book at Snowy Owl. read more

So my boyfriend (Sam) is from Texas and was coming up to visit me and experience his first real winter for three weeks. We were discussing all the wonderful wintery things he had to experience such as: sledding, snowman building, skiing, tubing, snowshoeing, and skating. Then I had a moment of epiphany, dog sledding! I had gone dog sledding when I was seven in Alaska on a cart and being a dog enthusiast thoroughly enjoyed myself. The next fourty-eight hours consisted of me giddily asking him if he wanted to go dog sledding. Every time he said yes. But every time I was reminded of it I just had to double check. After doing some research online we decided on Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours (although that being said the others weren't that far behind) and I called and made reservations for the 2 hour tour (I'd plan doing this a few days in advance as I got the feeling they booked up in advance). I'd recommend making sure you have snow pants and nice heavy winter boots. We weren't well equipped in that area and ended up spending $40 in rentals (whoops! Our bad. But we were awfully cozy.) The drive up to Spray Lakes was pretty entertaining in and of itself. The first half hour was orientation and introduction to the dogs. The person who did this was wonderful, very clear, enthusiastic, and the jokes didn't feel forced (and that's talent). It was very obvious throughout the entire tour how everyone who worked there adored the dogs, which is one of the main reasons I decided to go with this company. We had a sled to ourselves and were therefore both able to 'drive'. There are some comments in here regarding the photographs they sell at the end which I'm not too keen on mostly because I hate having my photo taken (however Sam was a fan and bought them). But what I really admire is when we stopped on the lake, which was the halfway point, our guide asked us for our phones so he could take some pictures of us (which was awfully handy as one person had to be on the brake at any given time so moving wasn't exactly the easiest ;) So you aren't forced into buying the photos and could definitely leave that day with lovely photos on your own cameras if you wish. It was truly such a refreshing, enjoyable experience and I can not wait to recommend anyone who comes to visit me in Canmore to go themselves. Their passion for the dogs, the mountain views, the experience makes it all worthwhile. It is a once in a lifetime experience (although I am sure I will do it again) and was the highlight of Sam's trip. Nice ride through the woods and along the side of the lake. Riding in the sled isn't uncomfortable and they have blankets to keep you warm. Riding solo or tandem with an instructor is both a great experience. Make sure you book early as the solo sleds get booked fairly quickly. Free shuttle to and from the mountains to meet the dogs. Beautiful scenery throughout the entire drive along with the sledding. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable and you can tell they definitely enjoy what they do. I was looking forward to our dog sled tour for months before we came to Canmore and Banff. It did not disappoint! It was a dog lover's dream! We arrived and the office for the company was lovely. We got on a bus and drove to the location for the dog sled ride. We had about 10 minutes to play with and pet the dogs.they were super sweet and just wanted to be loved. There was training for driving the sled and then we were off. We had a guide on our sled and he was super friendly and nice. I'm currently 6 months pregnant and they made sure I was comfortable in the sled with a blanket. The trail was gorgeous and the views were spectacular. We were on the sled for about an hour and then at the end there was a bonfire and hot apple cider. I would say this is a must do in the Canmore and Banff area. There were 6 of us that went and it was worth every penny!! read more

One of the true highlights of our trip!! The experience was exhilarating and our kids have been begging to go back ever since. Our tour guides struck the right balance between instruction and allowing us to figure it out on our own. The scenery was beautiful, although I'll admit I was concentrating on 'mushing' and probably missed some of it. Our guides took us over a frozen bridge, down through various trails and out onto a wide open frozen lake. The dogs are unlike any dogs I've ever seen before, very wild, extremely strong and full of boundless energy. Truly a bucket list item and a total blast! read more

One of the best experiences I've ever had. The shuttle picks you up and drives approximately thirty minutes into a beautiful valley surrounded by wilderness and looming rocky mountain peaks in every direction. Our group of twelve was greeted by six guides and approximately fifty of the most beautiful dogs I have ever seen. The dogs were already secured to their dog sleds, eight per sled and were as excited to see us as we were to see them. We were permitted to venture to the different sleds and pet the dogs. Kudos to the Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tour as it was obvious right from the start that the dogs are all well loved and taken care of. After a brief but interesting educational history and safety lesson we were ready to mush. The dogs were equally anxious. In unison, they all began to bark, whine and yip in anticipation of what was to come. Some dogs even started to try and pull despite the sled being still tethered down. A few moments later, we were being pulled by eight dogs down a snowy trail. After a while we turn a corner and the landscape changes and the view opens up as we begin to cross a frozen lake. A truly unique way of seeing the the Canadian back country and Rocky Mountains. If you are a dog lover and a site seer this this the experience for you. To be clear, this is not anything like a horseback riding tour but with dogs. A typical horseback riding tour involves a series of docile horses trotting in order on a trail, nose to ass, with little to no ability to steer the horse away from the tail as if you are on a boring merry-go-round. This is an adrenaline rush. These dogs go fast. You cannot run alongside of them unless the dogs are going up a hill and even then it is tough to keep up. If you ignore the one rule, don't let go, the dogs will take off and leave you behind in a blink of an eye. If you don't lean into the turns, the sled will flip. This is some serious fun and the dogs love it too. I cannot say enough of the great adventure that is Snowy Owl Sled Dog tours. The staff at the pickup location are very friendly and helpful. My wife and I had the pleasure of having Pedro as our bus driver to the actual sledding area. (the scenery on the way was breathtaking). Once at the location, we were greeted by not only many great guides and other staff but also all the dog cuddles we could handle. The instruction time was the perfect balance of humour and direction and put all of the first time "mushers" minds at ease. Sled teams are pre chosen for the guests to give the best possible experience. Mark (or maybe with a C) was our guide, who led us through our trip. Words can't describe how amazing he was for helping us feel comfortable and getting us through what I must call an adventure of a lifetime. Mark (c) showed us how to encourage our leads Peach and Katana to take us on an amazing tour. After the tour, snacks and drinks were provided by the fire at which time we were offered photos not only of our beginning, but also the end of our trip It is amazing how much more confident I looked in the after photo. If you are in the area, definitely go for a tour. Be prepared for a bit of a workout, but the rewards (memories and doggy kisses) will be totally worth it. read more
