My family and I went out to find a Christmas tree like we always do every year. We typically go to Apple Hill but wanted to try a different place so we venture out to Snowy Peaks Christmas Tree Farm. We walk for at least an hour through the trees to find a barren land with poorly shaped trees in terrible condition. So we end up buying a pre-cut tree for double the price (which they import in from a different location). The tree is put on top of the car by seemingly teenagers and only a mile down the road, it falls off the car. So now I have to pull over just to secure the tree back on the car. Here we are, on December 21 and the tree has fully died, despite rushing it home and immediately putting it in water after cutting the trunk. This place seems to be run poorly and maybe even sets up a model for people to end up buying their more expensive, dying, pre-cut trees. They have surely made a Christmas memory for me I won't forget. read more

First off, we haven't had a natural tree in 15 years.. the mess, sap, needles and pollen. Our tree finally gave out and we thought to try again, to get a natural tree and enjoy the season with a fabulous smell, a beautiful tree and enjoyable experience, cutting of the fresh tree .. Well the drive, 3.5hours from the South Bay.. then hike through the tree lot of many different kinds of trees, this was nice.. We found a beautiful silver tip (1/2 the cost of a tree lot), somewhat awkward in that a section to the top was bare, that section could be strategically placed to the back. The purchase, cutting and atmosphere was a solid 4 .. there was a huge lack of direction, parking, paying, netting.. what a cluster (there were so many employs and so little thought to assist). We arrived just when they opened and selected the tree within 30 min.. Trying to leave was horrifying.. a small drive with a fence on each side (presumably so no one could get out or in without seeing the fence/entry gal.. We waited 20 mins to get out!! After taking the tree down we found sap all over my ornate ornaments, the tree skirt and my hardwood floors.. ruined some of my precious ornaments!! it took hours to remove the sap from the ornaments, it was dripping inches off the ones that were placed inside the tree. The branches were so weak from the beginning, I had lost several bulbs from falling.. The final straw (I will "Never" get a tree from this place) was the tiny insects and spiders!!! All over the tree at the trunk!! All over my tree skirt!! Go knows how many were in my house for a month and a half!! And YES, we did leave the tree in a bucket of water for a couple days after getting home and we did spray it down. 2 stars only for the cutting and selecting as well as the price. My family has been coming here since I was little (I'm 39 now). We decided to make it a family tradition and all get together to go get trees for each of our homes. It's such a fun experience. Walking around for hours, debating on which tree is the perfect one. The hot cocoa, fire pit and the ride around the farm make it so much fun. This is our 4th year coming here. We always get a 14-16ft tree and never have an issue finding the perfect tree. There is no shortage at this 40 plus acreage farm! Be prepared to go on a hike. We've been here in snow, rain and sun. Such a fun time to go with family and friends. They always have a bonfire, Santa and hot chocolate. We take full advantage of cutting our tree ourselves! The tree is then picked up by the employees in their trucks! Great customer service! I suggest going as early as possible as this place is becoming more popular. Regarding COVID precautions...not many staff wearing mask. More customers weren't wearing mask than those wearing them. We had ours on and stayed away from others. read more

This was my first time coming here, it's a huge area with cute picture spots. Everyone was friendly and happy to help you in any way. I only have a couple notes, one being that I know my tree was mis-measured. They said it was 6.5 feet when I know in fact it was not. The second thing is they did not breakdown the sales tax on the tag it was added in but not broken down well. Overall we had fun, it's cute and rare place since there aren't many you cut tree farms anymore. They have a minimum cut height of 5ft and the trees are now $13 a foot. read more

Such a great, beautiful place to pick and cut down your own Christmas tree! They have 60 acres of property (you're not walking over all of that), but tucked away up in Foresthill and the Tahoe National Forest, the nature you're surrounded by here is breathtaking. We came the Saturday after Thanksgiving, which I would imagine is one of the busier days of the season. When we arrived in the afternoon around 2:30, there were cars parked outside the main lot, just off Foresthill Road, because there were so many visitors. It seemed to get less crowded pretty quickly, and many cars started loading their cut trees and driving away. The sun also sets pretty early these days. The employee we talked to on the phone said that as long as you're there by 4pm, they'll let you in to pick a tree. The minimum cut is 5 feet, and you can't cut any trees with red ribbons tied on them (these trees are for research purposes). I actually didn't see any trees that had red ribbons. You get a brochure and map when you arrive, as well as a saw. There is a bin for dirty saws when you're finished. You're also given a tag that you attach to your tree. After meandering down several of the trails (wear good outdoorsy shoes - some of the areas are muddy), we found a tree we liked. We cut it down, tagged it, and took it to the edge of the nearest trail. They have a couple of trucks that drive down the trails, and they'll pick up your tree and bring it to the main part of the property. Then you pay for your tree and drive your car to the pick-up area where they'll load the tree onto your car. We chose to have ours netted for the drive home. It ended up being 6.5' and fit quite well on our Subaru Outback. It was over an hour drive home for us, and the tree stayed securely on top without issues. They have a large fire pit with stumps to sit on. There are also port-a-potties and portable sinks to wash your hands at. When we came that Saturday, there was a Santa Claus handing out mini candy canes. They also offer complimentary hot chocolate, which they will serve cooled-down for your kids, if you'd like. There are several picnic tables under the trees, where I saw families gathered to eat. One family brought their propane stove and cooked some meat, which was really clever. As far as COVID precautions, none of the employees were wearing masks, and masks and social distancing were not enforced or even encouraged on any signs. We only encountered a handful of people wearing masks. read more

We have been going to Snowy Peaks for years and are always impressed with the beautiful views, friendly and accommodating staff, and the whole experience.The owners go above and beyond to make the Farm a fun tradition, from Santa's village, to picking and cutting down your own tree, the fire pit, and hot chocolate, it is a great way to start the Christmas season. We were very impressed this year with the staff, they have trucks that will pick up your tree and bring it back to the parking area, however this year we cut our tree near the top so we decided to carry it. As soon as two employees noticed this they ran up and carried it the rest of the way for us. Very accommodating and appreciated! We will definitely be back! read more

We used to go to Snowy Peaks every year when I was growing up. Decided to go back this year but I was nervous when I read other reviews that the staff wasn't wearing masks. I called to see if that was true but they assured me that the staff was wearing masks. When we got there we were greeted by a maskless girl handing out brochures. About half the staff had them on- most of the guys loading the trees on the cars up close to people did not, Santa didn't, a guy who I assume was the owner or manager did not. There were no signs to encourage mask wearing or social distancing. Considering I took the time to call ahead of time they could have at least been honest- it's obviously important to me to be as covid safe as possible. California had 25,000 new cases yesterday and the ICU beds are nearly full- I would hope any place I go right now would be aware of this and taking precautions. read more

My family has gone to this Christmas tree farm every year since I was born.. very fun and a much better experience than going to any lot in the city. Staff is always friendly and willing to help. They have free hot chocolate and candy canes.. very festive. I don't think there's any place that will put you in the mood for Christmas more than here! The last few years they have had horse drawn wagon rides.. it cost a few dollars (don't remember how much exactly). Needless to say... can't wait till we get to go again! read more

Decided to try and cut down our Christmas Tree for the first time this year. Showed up at 9:35am and the parking lot was almost full. I can honestly say the people at this location were very friendly and we felt welcome. The kids got free hot chocolate. Lot of people brought their dogs. The selection of trees was great. I didn't find your typical noble fur but still had pretty trees. As we were leaving the parking lot was full and people were forced to park outside in a secondary parking lot not inside of the gate but on the same side as the entrance. The search for a tree was just enough walking for the little ones. Nice little hike that was pretty easy to nav through the hills of trees. They had horses hauling people around in a carriage. The staff went through the aisles of trees with trucks to pick up your cut down tree. I would suggest get to the location as soon as they open because it got packed quickly. For our first time the people that worked there made our experience well worth it. Would definitely recommend this place! read more

I love this place. We've cut down our tree here now 3 years in a row. It's beautiful. It's fun. It's easy (enough). And it's cheaper to get a big ol tree then going to Home Depot. The hot chocolate is gross, but free so who can complain! The crowd is fun and there is a swing that the kids look forward to riding every year. Hope there is snow next year! read more

This was our first trip to this tree farm. We found a tree stump that had two trees growing from it. Not knowing how the pricing would be, we walked to the front to ask how they charge for this special kind of tree. They informed us that they charge for a tree and a half when two grow from one stump. We chopped the tree down and went to pay and they charged us for two trees instead of one and a half. When we tried to explain what we were told the worker Joe was very rude and demanded we pay for two trees. An older gentleman had to step in to calm joe down. He discounted us $20 for the lack of customer service. I am rating this a one because of the unprofessionalism and the overall experience we had at the end of the day. read more

Its a bit of a drive to get there but thats what makes the whole experience fun, pack up the family in the good ol SUV crank up the heater and blast some Christmas tunes while drinking on your hot chocolate! Whe nyou arrive to Snowy Peaks you see acres and acres of trees big and small to choose from, they hand you your own saw and let you pick your your familys tree. Once you find "the one" attach a ribbon with your name on it and they will come by and pick it up. There is a frire pit for the family to sit around, Santa is there with his crew, they sell hot chocolate and missiletoe too! ***Remember to bring cash, they do not accept plastic or checks. Skip Apple Hill, this is the place for a Christmas tree. It's much less expensive too. I would say about half the price for the same "breed?" of tree. It's a lot more scenic too. There were so many trees to choose from and they have an excellent system for getting your tree back to your starting point. Free hot chocolate, candy canes, and fires to get you warmed up. The only down side is that all the silver tips are completely picked over. I think in another few years they'll have some that are big enough to cut but for now, it's disappointing. what is christmas without a trip to the mountains to cut your own tree? snowy peaks is set on a ridge with a spectacular view of the Sierra. during their christmas season, there is often snow on the ground, but the road is always plowed, so driving is never an issue. its about a 30 minute drive from Auburn, so its not so high that snow is ever an issue, (although I wouldn't drive up there if snow were actively falling without 4WD). they sell the most beautiful wreaths made at a nearby wreath farm. they have a wagon to take people out to the trees, so you don't have to hoof it if you don't want to. they hire local teenagers to help out with cutting and wrapping the trees up into bundles to tie on your car. they have a snack shack and local arts and crafts for sale too, usually to support the local high school kids trip to Washington, D.C. the owners also spend time in New Mexico and love the whole chile thing. They have started hydroponic gardens of strawberries, blue berries and chiles, which they have as you-pick in summer and also sell at the farmers market in Auburn. its a fun outdoor clean air outing for the kids, although you can get berries cheaper at the market. read more

After sipping on free hot chocolate, warming our hands by the fire and tromping over hill and dale to find the perfect tree, we try to check out but can't because they only take cash or checks (who carries a checkbook these days?) This is one of an amazing tree farm to go to. The people are all dress up as Santa's helpers and always have a smile on their face. There are a plenty of acres of Christmas trees to pick from. I recommend wear hiking or comfortable shoes because to get the best tree you gotta walk uphill downhill and a little ways to get it. Do not worry though, you do not have to carry the tree all the way down, you just simply drop it off at the side of the road and the elves will go around and pick up your tree in their pick up and will bring it back to the place where you will be sitting near the warm fire drinking hot chocolate. They also have different trinkets for sale and places set up where you can take pictures. Because it is up in the mountain there is also an amazing view and walking around looking for that perfect tree. I do admit that the price is a little high but it is the experience with the family of cutting down a tree together that matter. I heard that they also do carriage rides but it was not there when we went. Over all, it is a place where you should give it a chance one year. read more

Snowy Peaks Tree Farm is a great place to get a Christmas tree. My family usually goes up into the forest up north to cut a tree (with a permit), but that area was a bit too snowy this year, so we needed a local place to cut a tree. Snowy Peaks has lots of nice trees to choose from (including silver tips!) that range from 5 feet (minimum size) all the way up to over 12+ feet. The staff there is very friendly and helpful and the place is very well organized and managed. There were a lot of people there, but we never really feel overcrowded as the farm is large and spread out. All you have to do it find a tree and cut it down (they provide the saw), leave it near one of the dirt roads and they will pick it up, bring it back to the loading area and put a net on it if you want, and they will tie it on top of your car for you! They have a horse drawn cart you can ride around on and free hot chocolate. The place was very family friendly. Some people even were having a tailgate lunch near their cars which was a good idea (maybe next year!). There is a coupon on their website to get a small discount. This was my first time to Snowy Peak and I was not disappointed! Came home with a nice 10 1/2 foot silver tip tree that looks great. And because it just outside of Foresthill, it is a nice alternative to farms in Apple Hill, especially for folks who live along the I-80 corridor. All in all, I would highly recommend Snowy Peaks Tree Farm! read more
