    Fois goie rice

Fois gras jyu (rice) was amazing but would suggest that you share because althought the portion is small, it can get quite heavy after awhile. The sashimi was quite fresh. We also ordered a wagyu beef tataki which was yummy too. This restaurant is quite pricey though, so maybe for a treat occasionally :)

Tuna Tataki - poor cut full of cartilage which was inedible

Sadly So Restaurant's food just doesn't hold up against the competition, particularly given the price. We had the Tuna Tataki and the Scallop with Daikon salad for starter. I was actually a bit offended to find we were served such poor cuts of tuna - filled with cartilage that was impossible to chew - surely no good Japanese restaurant would be seen serving that?! The flavour of the salad was actually quite nice, but was ruined by being quite soggy and the scallops being overcooked. Our mains were the tonkatsu and the soft shell crab sushi. The tonkatsu was probably the best dish we had but that didn't stop it being slightly burnt. On the plus side - I did thoroughly enjoy the sauce served alongside it. The soft shell crab sushi was fine. Despite our waiters and the staff being generally attentive and friendly, this couldn't really make up for the food. There are plenty of better, cheaper, places less than a minutes walk away from here.

I always get hesitant having sushi when I'm in new areas. If it's a bad experience, it ruins my tongue's last memorable fling with amazing fish and Japanese food. And my tongue is high maintenance. But So gave me a confident pep talk regarding London's Japanese food scene. I had some plum wine (a highly recommend) and ordered a Chirashi. The sashimi was fresh, it was REAL crab - not imitation crab, rice was good, and ginger was sweet and tart. Most of all, I love hearing Japanese, gouchisousamadeshita! In terms of the physical restaurant, it was nicely lighted, and had an upscale French-Japanese feel. Some would say it's a bit pricey, but I wasn't too bothered by it since the price was worth the quality and value. Besides, what else do you expect for good sushi? Obviously not Yo! Sushi prices. I am sure there are many more authentic Japanese restaurants in London, but for now, until I am introduced to something better, I will return to So for some more tongue action.

A trip up to Town, plus my mission to Get to Know Sushi brought me to this eaterie. A really good discovery. There is a huge selection to choose from, and they do Specials. Apparently there is a famous Roll named The Mackerel Timber Roll, and it's back! Whoopee!! but I had enough to deal with reading the vast menu already presented. Fabulous surroundings, as was the staff and food. We shall return, (the wife's still not keen)!!

Well, a little bit disappointed with the food and the waitress downstairs serviced us very unfriendly. The ingredients are fresh through, like salmon, but taste not good, not worth with the price I think.

My Bento box. I ate everything!

Came in out of the rain on a whim and left happy! My Bento box was was filled with all sorts of great flavors and my wife's sushi was very good. Everyone was friendly and it was a good escape from the rain and crowds outside.

The concept of mixing Japanese, Brazilian, and Peruvian flavors is really unique and you can see it throughout the menu. The sushi was very fresh and well presented, and the small plates were great for sharing. I especially enjoyed the creative combinations and the attention to detail in the dishes. The cocktails were also excellent and very well balanced. Service was friendly and attentive without feeling rushed. Overall, it's definitely on the pricier side, but the quality of the food, the atmosphere, and the overall experience make it worth it for a special occasion or a fun night out.

Unfortunately, it was rather inconsistent execution in both the front and back of house. We waited ten minutes at the table without someone present. After pointedly looking around the dining room for anyone to come by, someone finally asked if we'd been helped. He was not particularly friendly and did not apologize for the wait, but did help us place our order and mentioned that food would arrive as it was prepared. Food service was prompt after that with robata items coming out quickly (~6 minutes after ordering), followed by the arrival of salad immediately after finishing the robata. Our shared large plate came out shortly afterwards, but they did miss serving the second bowl of rice that we had initially ordered. As for specific dishes, only one was fully balanced and the others had good elements but also missing parts to complete their respective flavor profiles. Robata - Duck Breast - Duck was tender and well cooked with nice textural contrast from crushed macadamia nuts - Tamarind sauce was sweet and very flavorful - Accompanying hominy was prepared very well - Seasonal offering Robata - Sweet Corn with Jalapeño Butter & Lime - American corn seems generally sweeter with more plump kernels - Too lightly buttered and minimal to no jalapeño notes Large Plate - Mushroom Tobanyaki - Unexpectedly butter forward, even with yuzu soy and truffle ingredients - Missing yuzu flavor to balance the butter - Truffle was so minimal that it was essentially not noticeable - Quite disappointing, as this is a menu staple at their Las Vegas location that is typically bursting with flavor complexity Salad - Green - Flavorful sesame dressing - Lightly salted wakame tempura provided great crunch and textural contrast - Dressing distribution was imbalanced Mocktail - Lychee Lemongrass Collins - Sweet and refreshing - Light, spicy finish from chilis Overall, it was a disappointing dining event when there are so many great options in the city and compared to another location within the chain. It wasn't a terrible experience to avoid, but one that was rather lackluster and forgettable.

It sparked a search for THE sushi place to go to around the city. I walked past this place while I was getting lost on my lunch break. I made a note of it and told myself I'd go in sometime, but it was like some sort of Harry Potter cross dimensional place that I couldn't find, It's well hidden but it's an absolute gem. It's a typical conveyor belt sushi setup. With colour coded plates. So far so good. What strikes me is the quality of the stuff going past. None of your dry, cold rice endlessly circling a glum, flourescent table a la Yo! Sushi. This is the good stuff. There is a great selection and it's not all safe bets (tuna or salmon) there's a good mix of vegetarian, adventurous and traditional items. Plus they have nailed the warm rice/ crisp nori in the way that no other place I have been to in London. Probably because they are making the sushi right in front of you. In fact if you don't see what you like, you can request it. Service is prompt, friendly, polite and never intrusive. This is my favourite sushi spot in London, I've taken friends and converted cynics. It's authentic enough to have the traditional Japanese desserts too. Not too expensive, an absolute bargain for what you get. 10/10.

The odd thing is that Habibi is never busy, it's always a bit quiet. I wondered why so I paid a couple of visits. There is a wide selection of sushi available to eat in or take away. The thing is, the place doesn't feel as clean as it should be. The lids covering the sushi often seems a little musty and if an item is too large for the plate (typically the stuff on skewers) it drags across the display of soft drinks in the middle (check out all the missing pain on the cans!) To add to this general feeling of uncleanliness, there were a lot of little flies in the restaurant which would occasionally land on the uncovered plates on the conveyor belt. It seems the electric fly catcher, situated right next to the Miso soup pot, isn't doing its job well enough. Given the place has been so quiet on my few visits, the staff weren't really that attentive and you had to shout to get their attention. I did notice that a few people came in for takeaways during my lunches. I felt a bit sorry for them, as during my second visit the chef was taking unsold sushi from the plates and boxing this up for takeaway. It could well be that both my visits were uncharacteristic and believe me, in a world of homogenised dining brands such as Yo!, I strongly want to support the independent restaurateur, but I think they need to smarten their act if I'm to ever consider going back.

I never had an empty glass. Service was so incredibly attentive without ever feeling overbearing. They brought out starters promptly. Edamame was really great. Loved the shishito peppers as well. I didn't even touch the miso soup lol. Saving my appetite for the main event! The sushi buffet was truly excellent. The sashimi was impeccable quality. One very minor complaint is that the plates were very small (not a huge deal, I just felt bad for the staff for having to clear plates often as I could only fit like four pieces of sushi on one, lol). I thought the range of food was great. The salads were really nice as well. There was a very simply dressed spinach salad with a subtle truffle flavour that I loved. The choice of mains is really just a bonus. I opted for the black cod (of course) which (of course) was fantastic. Honestly the buffet was so good I would have been just as happy without it but who can complain! Minor complaint is that the dessert selection was just okay. Honestly given how phenomenal everything else was I was a bit surprised they didn't elevate the desserts as much. I had some decent churros with a truly unbelievable caramel sauce and tried a brownie that I didn't love. I didn't come for the desserts and it still hit the spot, but they could show them some love! Overall well worth the price. Will return.

To be fair I think it's more a cocktail bar that just happens to serve sushi on the side so maybe that's why they don't put too much attention on their food. Sadly we didn't order any cocktails so we can't comment on that. The whole restaurant itself definitely lacks warmth. It felt like a big empty white space with a few table and chairs thrown in lit up with cold spotlight lighting. Service on the other hand was superb. The staff were enthusiastic and attentive in taking your order and making sure you got everything you wanted. However they weren't knowledgable in the menu at all and you will come to find out why. We started with mixed vegetable tempura which was really red peppers and courgettes, not really the mix we were expecting. The batter was good, a bit on the greasy side but still light and thin. They were served with takoyaki sauce which was interesting. If you like the taste of worchester sauce then you will like it. The super salmon roll had potential but the quality of ingredients let it down. Sadly this place does lack quality and the price doesn't match what you get. The salmon was mushy and tasteless. But the filling itself was nice. The use of pickled daikon inside which was very new to me in a salmon roll provided a nice crunchy texture and added a refreshing flavour. Rainbow roll costing £12.00 was not worth its price. Described as spicy crab was nothing more than a crab stick inside actually made from white fish. The fish slices were mushy and only one Seabass slice in sight. It tasted mushy and low in quality The tuna and salmon sashimi was more for presentation than to eat. Even by presenting the sashimi on ice, it does not hide the fact that the tuna and salmon were not the freshest or high quality. The cut was poor, you can taste the fibers, it was mushy and lacking flavour. The Unagi nigiri was okay. The eel itself could have been bought marinated already. Nothing too memorable but at least the marinate was nice and the rice held nicely together. The potato croquettes that was given to us was a hilarious mistake. It was suppose to be our sautéed pak choi we ordered. The waiter even delivered it to us saying 'pak choi'. It was clearly potato croquette which wasn't on the menu. We started to make stories about how they might have taken the chef's lunch by mistake. We didn't fuss over it until we finished it as it was quite nice. In the end it came conplimentary as it turned out they ran out of pak choi and made us something else instead. Haha... Random! The Miso udon noodle soup was really udon placed into over salty miso soup. There was no extra meat or vegetable stock added, just instant miso paste with tonnes of wakame salad which was probably the reason why it was so salty. The egg that came with it was overcooked rather than soft boiled. The whole dish itself was something I could have made myself in 5 mins. The salmon teriyaki donburi was probably the best dish of the night. However they could have toned down the sauce as it all dripped to the bottom making the last few bites very overpowering in teriyaki sauce and salty. But other than that the salmon cut into small pieces meant it took on a lot of flavour. The red cabbage provided texture and the rice was cooked perfectly, fluffy and sticky. Although there were a few good dishes here and there I really don't see any reason to venture into this restaurant for the food. For the price you pay you can get far better quality of sushi and mains. It was a nice and funny experience overall but I won't do it again.

I was lucky enough to, along with a colleague, be taken here on several occasions for a quick lunch by a client (indicative of how welcoming the Japanese are!) By 'genuine' I mean no dumbed-down menus, no super-slick interiors to detract from potentially average food, and no gimmicks of any kind. The place is staffed and run by Japanese nationals as any self-respecting Japanese restaurant should be - and perhaps more importantly, frequented by them regularly, too. Service is smiling and attentive and no more that it needs to be. The food is inexpensive (~£6-8 for a bento, £7-11 for ramen, udon or donburi) and so tasty. On my most recent trip I had beef ramen with tan tan (sesame paste) soup base, and my brother had salmon teriyaki on brown rice. Both dishes had generous proportions of meat/fish, and the donburi came with a side salad and pickles. The unagi (eel) is also lovely, and the place does an extensive line in pick-your-soup base noodle bowl dishes where you have the option of shoyu, miso, and sesame as mentioned above, among others. I can't speak for the takeaway bento, but they looked pretty solid and of a decent quality. Drinks come in the familiar (Coke etc) and the more, um, 'traditional' - aloe vera juice, Pocari, cold bottled green and black teas and others. This place is rather hidden away on the fringes of the City, behind Aldgate station on the Petticoat Lane side. In many ways it's a great location as it's very much a local haunt, and in others a little frustrating as even if you're working in the City it can be a fair walk to get there and back! My advice would also be to get there early (between midday and half-past) to ensure a seat, as well as before some of the more popular items on the menu disappear. In brief summary, I couldn't really recommend this place enough if you're in the area. You'll get multi-kudos from any friends Nippon friends (or appreciators of their incredible cuisine) and have a lunch to beat the hell out of an uninspired sandwich / soft-drink combo whilst spending a similarly scant amount of your hard-earned cash.
