We made the trip up route 15 from Virginia…read more We spent delightful hours in the cherry trees picking the most delicious sweet cherries!! The trees were loaded with ripe fruits. The ground was clear of poison ivy and we felt clean and safe. The Lee were plenty of ladders to assist us in getting the high fruits. We then also visited the blueberry patch and loaded up a few pounds of those succulent fruits!

Yesterday we went on our usual visit to buy lots of apples and other fruits. On the website it claims, "Our apple bins are stocked full with 8 varieties; plus we have Honeycrisp for sale! We have lowered our pricing in recognition of the surplus crop this season. Support your local farmers! " We were excited to get all the varieties!! We walked in and no one greeted us. They just kept doing whatever they were doing. A couple was sorting apples in the back. We started picking out our apples when we noticed the price. WOW! Prices skyrocketed!! Even the pears were outrageous. Our honey crisp apples were 47! Not to mention we got other items as well. The seconds even went higher in price. We had the front counter full of stuff even know the increase in price because we believe in supporting local farmers. We were ready to checkout and had to say so, even when the lady was standing right there at the register. We asked about when they will have the 50 pound bags of potatoes in cause we been buying them there for years and look forward to them. "they are in when they are here". Was her answer!!! I could NOT believe that! She was just nasty and rude. Plus we always was helped when we bought so much to carry to our car that was parked right outside the door. That done it in for me. They lost a good customer and our family.

In this instance, we were on the hunt for apple cider donuts. We found the donuts (delicious!) and a whole lot more. True to the name, Mt Airy is a working orchard and farm with a very impressive farm store operation. On this fall day, there was a dizzying selection of produce, baked goods, frozen prepared foods (pies and more), gourds, pumpkins, apples, and much more. There are apparently pick your own opportunities as well. Parking is plentiful and Mt Airy is well-staffed with a very friendly team of folks. The farm store is immaculate. Note that Mt Airy is in a very rural area off winding, narrow roads. Pay attention to your GPS and drive carefully. Highly recommend this York County gem.

My question: When you see yellowing leaves on houseplants, it's typically due to overwatering. I use a moisture meter to help me gauge whether my plants need watering. She suggested putting the meter to the very bottom of the pot for accuracy. As a plant enthusiast, I found it hard to walk out of the House of Flowers without making a purchase. Getting there was super easy. GPS took me right to the entrance, and parking was plentiful and clearly marked just off the road. From the moment I arrived, it was obvious this place takes pride in its space -- the property is beautifully manicured, and everything is well laid out and easy to navigate. But let's talk about the real star of the show: The Conservatory. This is where Hueter's completely won me over. The Conservatory isn't just a greenhouse -- it's an experience. A fully curated, thoughtfully designed, houseplant-lover's dream. The plant pots aren't just stacked on shelves...they're displayed on color-coordinated tables like a home décor showroom. The plants themselves are beautifully arranged, clearly priced, and paired with care instruction signs that actually make you feel confident bringing one home. I spent nearly an hour in there just wandering, taking photos, and repeatedly saying, "Oh, that's BEAUTIFUL!" to absolutely no one. The selection was fantastic -- a great mix of plants and pots -- and the pricing felt very reasonable for the quality and presentation. They were also running an Easter egg hunt inside The Conservatory, which was a fun idea...in theory. Unfortunately, I think I arrived a little too late in the day, because I looked (and looked...and looked) and didn't find a single egg. No one else around me seemed to be having any luck either. My only suggestion would be to either restock the eggs throughout the day or remove the signage once they're all found -- just so people know whether it's still an active thing or not. Overall, though? This place is a gem. Hueter's isn't just somewhere you pop in and out of -- it's somewhere you wander. It's calm, it's beautiful, and it's very easy to lose track of time (and possibly your self-control if you're a plant person like me). I'll absolutely be back. There are already a few plants from this visit sitting firmly on my "you're coming home with me next time" list... and honestly, it's only a matter of time.

Sue Hauenstein, daughter of the late J.H. Quentin Beisel, and her husband continue her father's legacy of growing and selling annuals. Excellent selection of many summer favorites. It seems many customers call ahead every year to get their selection. This business doesn't have either a website or a Facebook page, strictly word of mouth, offering excellent locally grown annuals for reasonable prices and quality.
