I had the opportunity to start my own BNI Chapter within the So Cal BNI Region back in April 2017. I haven't stopped doing business since then! BNI replaced the way I was bringing in business. I am in the personal lines insurance industry so I have shifted making outbound calls to grow my business to setting up 1-2-1s with my fellow chapters members. We strategize together to learn what types of referrals we would like to receive. BNI is an international organization, but SoCal BNI has really set themselves apart because of their creative and innovative style of supporting their members. The Regional team is always there to support their members with not only the day to day type of transactions, but a couple times every year they bring the entire region together so we can see how large of a network we are really part of. I was a member of BNI about 10 years. After six, I left for a variety of reasons. What I discovered is that I continued to get business from BNI even after I left. I recently joined and I really like the people in my chapter. But when I went to get the required trainings at the SOCAL BNI in Buena Park, I found that the staff is neither helpful nor professional, you can't ever get a response to your emails or messages, and there is a staff member Andrew, who is simply rude. I think if it wasn't for the useless staff, I'd have rated this organization differently. read more

BNI is a good tool for entering the business arena and building your specific business. However, their memmbership requirements are not clear. This is my mine gripe: Two different groups asked for someone from my industry. I spent my time immediately doing 1-2-1 meetings and giving referrals. Both groups dq'd me but would not give me answer as to why. DONT WASTE PEOPLE's TIME and them have the lack of courage or conviction as to say why they arent a "good fit". I was a member of the Wombats chapter of BNI for 6 years. I represented a local dentist in the networking group. I did extremely well in the group. I brought about 100K of business into our office each year from the referrals I received. I also worked hard to give a lot of referrals to the other members of my group so in turn they worked hard to give back to my business. It takes a once a week 2 hour commitment to attend the meetings and a desire to help your fellow chapter members businesses grow as well as yours. It takes about a year to develop real relationships with your fellow members but the trust has to be there in order to get referrals, it's well worth the investment to build life long referral relationships. The only reason I left BNI is because I left my job to be a stay at home mom. I highly recommend BNI and the Irvine Wombats chapter! read more
