I spoke on the phone with MS. KORNEGAY a month ago. I live in Texas. The phone call was an hour long 3/23/2026. This is for her supervisor Ms. Danielle Wilson in Jamacia. NY 11431-5800. Because I wasn't able to get documents needed here at our San Antonio office, MS. KORNEGAY promised she would have documents to me in 7-11 days!!! It was pertinent ,time sensitive info needed for my mentally disabled son's AJL hearing. She put me on hold over 25 times because she needed time to look up info, kept saying hold on when I tried to ask something or give her specific info needed. She sounded incompetent or New. How hard is it to look up the following: Copies of notices sent to my son of overpayments, notices to appeal, that they say were denied, refusal for him to file the SSA-362 for hardship, inability to pay, bank name the overpayments went to, Copy of bank they say they garnished $25,000 and now saying he owes $51,000. Just got notice they are garnishing his disability pay in May in the amount of $890 for the next 5 yr, leaving him with just $680 a month to live on. His car was repossessed, he has no assets. He did not get any of the notices from SSA because his roommate had evicted him,withheld his mail and he was living in his car. I was unaware of any of this.He was diagnosed with severe schitsophrenic-Bi-polar disorder in 2008 was diagnosed by a personal pyschiatrist and a SS appointed pyschiatrist!and & is currently 100% worse, on 6 medications. Would ANY one of you employees who have children, family members you would want to be treated in this manner? THE SS SYSTEM does not care, I am 74 ,I've been to our local office 8 times since 2024, waiting hours when the PA system isnt working or screens with the nbr not working & it sickens me that my beloved 48 yr old son is like a zombie. I've already buried one son at age 33. As for MS. KORNEGAY, this review is for YOUR NEGLIGENCE ,lack of compassion, making promises, & commitments and not following through and you definitely should be fired from the SS TELESERVICE CENTER @ P.O. Currently at the Jamaica Center. Made an appointment, came on time. I go upstairs and find out it's first come first serve ??? Why ???? If this was the case I would've came way earlier. It's been 45 minutes, and there are still ~100 people ahead of me. Most did not have appointments. Why do they require appointments if they're gonna let people in? I had made an appointment, unlike many others in the office, so my wait time was super short. The woman who helped me was awesome--friendly and efficient. I know most people don't have the best experience here, so I definitely felt lucky that mine was smooth and pleasant. That said, the overall vibe is very court-like. You go through security, take the elevator, then walk down a long hallway into a waiting room. From there, another hallway branches off into a bunch of small separate rooms--it's kind of creepy, not gonna lie lol. read more

They waste your time, went to change my name, provided all documents, did not get a replacement after a month and was told I had to go back in. They did not get the documents apparently. Feels like a third world country. Came in another day and they had a meeting for an hour, everyone had to wait. Why even gave out appointments, It's unprofessional to have a meeting, while having so much people waiting. How long does it take to have a meeting. I recently receive mail from the SSA to contact a representative and given their extension number. After 20 unsuccessful calls over the course of several days, I decided to wait for the next available representative. It was looking good! The automated phone system asked for my ss # but after some additional time, I received a message saying to call during business hours. It was in the afternoon and according their website well within their posted business hours. Not sure what to do because they've provided me with a deadline that's not far in the future -- one that I'm pretty sure will be honored.... read more

Same here, a mixed bag: 5 stars for the SSA employee from the Jamaica Queens office who helped me. 2 stars for the SSA in general. Like others, my retirement application was also routed to the Jamaica NY office. I waited over 2 months for a response but no luck. I called the published general number for SSA and after being on hold for what felt like forever, finally being told to "Call back in early March." Finally called the local office and got another # to call where I was assured I would be assisted. After I left my# for a call back, I talked to someone who was able to help. The lady took my info and looked up my case and got the needed info she required from me which resolved the snafu. All in all, a good experience considering the monumental workload these folks are under. There's money to kill for wars, but when it comes to we the taxpayers, we are last. read more

Once you get upstairs the guards were decently courteous. And the staff member we spoke to was extremely nice. However, you have to get through the guards at the security checkpoint first, and they were a nasty bunch that treated every visitor like a criminal moving through a federal prison. LOL. Questions as to what you're doing in the building sounded more like police interrogations. And they all carried guns. Is it really that bad to work here? The building is actually pretty nice on the inside. And the lines were not long. You take a number and wait like you're at the DMV. All the seats have been taped up with "not in use," with every 6 seats or so labeled "seat in use," which was rather confusing. Does "seat in use" mean it's being used by someone already? Is it reserved? We were confused as to where to sit. So we took the first 2 empty spots. We were quickly told to sit apart, no matter if we're in the same family. The family behind us was likewise separated. I'm surprised they didn't separate the baby from the mother! Fun times. But it moved fast and was actually more pleasant than we expected. read more

I came here on 9/28/22 to update my name. I was in and out in a breeze. I honestly thought that it was gonna take longer, but I was probably in and out in less than half an hour. Which is awesome for Jamaica Avenue. I was a little concerned because of my past experience when going to Jamaica Avenue and trying to update any legal documents. I was pleasantly surprised that everything was organized. I was directed where to go. They had an employee helping people check in and retrieve numbers. Very hard to get correct information from my people who work there. You get all different stories after about a 45 minute wait.

I went to SS today to take care of something for my 91 year old father. I handed my fathers passport to the clerk who then proceeded to ask for a political passport. I explained that we are Puerto Rican and Puerto Rico is a US territory. He doubled down raising his voice demanding a political passport and I continued to repeat that Puerto Rico is a US territory and we are US citizens. We went back and forth until one of his colleagues piped in and said Puerto Rico is part of the US. Without an apology he asked for the paperwork. I was then sent to another clerk who was just as rude. Wouldn't let me finish explaining anything, kept directing his answers to my dad. Just as rude as the first. It's Extremely disconcerting to go to your local government office to take care of important issues and have to argue/explain repeatedly to its employee's, some of who are not citizens, that you are in fact a citizen and then deal with their attitude as if they are doing you a favor and not their job. read more

By luck of the draw, my retirement application was routed to this Jamaica NY office. I waited over a month for any response but received none. I called the published general number for SSA and after being on hold for nearly an hour, got a song and dance, being told to "Call back in another month". I stumbled over a phone number for my local office and after another hour on hold, I talked to someone who said they couldn't help but gave me the direct number for the Jamaica NY office. I called that office and after 90 minutes on hold, this guy Frank picked up. He was as helpful as anyone could ever be, telling me they are simply so backed up, they can't process claims on a timely basis. He took the time to review my case with me on the phone, and told me if there are no issues with the app, I should start receiving my payments, which I did a few weeks later. read more

The social security administration has a office located in the heart of Jamaica Queens. They have office which not only help provide social security cards and benefits but also has a section for judges to determine disability, a call center which takes calls and helps people over the phone. The building SSA is located is a good clean building, i have come here to help my godfather out with his social security benefits. The staff here are quite diverse and very friendly. I had no issue. Dealing with Social Security this year in the midst of Covid-19 campus lockdowns and consistently erratic mail deliveries has been a nightmare to say the least. For the past six months, we have been dealing with campuses from the West Coast even though we are in the East Coast. You call and representatives seem to make you feel all the more confused, perplexed and disenfranchised. Yesterday, one phone representative named Ms. Febles was able to clarify everything in a manner that was professional but more importantly compassionate. It is very important for any government agency to have persons like this individual as scams are definitely on the rise and we must depend on each other to protect our financial and social profiles as well as our overall dignity. have lost my Medical coverage, and for the past 3 months I have been trying to get my coverage reinstated. I have applied to medicaid, was denied and told to apply for medicare. Applied for SS-health benefits and was told it was denied. I went down to the SS-department at Jamaica Queens and was informed that we would get a call from a rep-on 1/2/24 @ 11am (re#24G0838G78618). My Son took off work to be there to help me when on the call, because i don't understand some of the questions. The Young lady asked a lot of questions and with in a few minutes indicated that it could receive spousal benefits via my husband, since i personally have not paid taxes ( take care of the house hold). The young lady indicated that she was getting things ready and then abruptly hung up. We knew that this was not good, because it had taken us LITTERALLY MONTHS to get this take care of. My son called back that number and spent over 1/2hr calling the Jamaica SSN and the Main SSN. The Main SS# (800-097-9540) called us back, We Spoke to Alex, and informed us that the young lady whom helped us tried calling us back twice after, that was an absolute blatant LIE!!!! Furthermore, Alex indicated that my green card had expired. My son explained to Alex that he is looking at my Green card and It does not expire until 2029. Alex asked why I did not apply for a QMB, What is that??? No explanation. Now I have to go back there to prove my green card has not expired. I legally have lived in this country for the past 23yrs, and you have immigrants crossing the boarded illegally and getting free health care and benefits. read more

I came here at 0915 hrs on a appointment, this is the 3rd time in my whole life coming here it had long lines, security screening worse then the airports, its kind of over rated security for a building that has a diversity of people working and visiting as Veteran I observed all kinds of people from all backgrounds and religion on line the Security look more like NYS State Corrections Officers, even thought Corecctions Officer look more presentable. As you work your way in, no information is given for those who have an appointment lucky for me I asked and was told to go in the front of the line, the building look very lame and boring it look more like a bad scientific test facility. Some of the security staff appeared and seem upset or have an attitude only the one handling the line by himself was very helpful unlike tge rest, again it's a selected few. For Example while in the waiting area on the 3rd floor, I observed a guest a elderly asking a simple questions of if his number was called. The security guard who was relieving another security for a meal break, he had a heavy Brooklyn accent uniform was wrinkle very unprofessional look, he stated to the guest "don't you know", the other guard intervine and was very helpful. While is understandable that they the security staff are not the information desk and theirs no one to assist the elderly and disabled they should have some one available a Social Security Administration staff interacting with the citizens they are supposed to served specially our Elderly. The whole floor was under construction, confusing waiting areas. From the last time I was here over 8 years, it has change allot, its still overcrowded and less staffing to help out. This visit was for a hearing first time and it's a maze, the few staff that I interacted with were very professional and helpful, I finally was able to make it to the right area it turns out it was the second floor hearing room. The Staff was very different, the security was bilingual, helpfull, pleasant and very proffesional, so was the lady at the receptionist, the monitor and judge, they set the high standards that should be followed by the rest of the Staff. No excuses for incompetence and poor customer service, its a paid job with benefits not a freeloading pay check. Hope this constructive critism was helpful, when coming to the SSA my advice to those visiting or have bussines, be ready come an hour and a half early, asked questions make sure if they don't have answer for you, asked where you can get answer. I made an appointment, took the day off work, paid for an uber. I went to the Jamaica office because i needed to go in person to get a new card due to a name change by marriage. They told me i'm all set i'll get my new card in the mail in 2 weeks. I get the new card via mail yesterday and its literally a DUPLICATE OF MY SAME CARD, old name. They didnt even change my name - the entire reason i went there, the reason that Was on the FORM!! I wasted my entire day - they dont even pay attention to what they're doing. So sloppy. I thought my experience would be like DMV where you literally can spend all day waiting on line. I've been at this location twice in my life both for name changes. I was in here for approx. 36 minutes each, which surprisingly is efficient for a public service. I highly recommend to arrive here very early when this office opens or in the early afternoon. The staff including security guard is nastily rude and disrespectful as it's just a job where you process paper work after paper work. The social security clerk screamed at several people in front of me for not producing any form of photo identification, as they'll give you a hard time for when issuing a social security to infant or name change. The social security clerks all appears disgruntled with working here and exhausted from processing paper work. My experience with the SSA Office is positive. Because of COVID they are doing appointment only, you have to call the office and get someone on the line to schedule the appointment (you can't do it over the internet). The day for my appointment, many folks were lined up and they don't have an appointment, guess the SSA is relaxing the appointment only policy because of the high vaccination rate. Anyway, making an appointment does help, as I was in and out of the office for 30 minutes. But if you plan on visiting the office, make sure you plan ahead, as they have very limited appointment availability. read more

The problem with this office is it's horribly unfriendly security guys that bark at you to get in line. The second problem is the idiots that come here and don't read or ask or find out what they need to know to get done what they need to get done. The result? The male security was nice. The first security was rude af basically telling me to force my grandmother in a wheelchair against her will. 2/3 office workers upstairs were super rude. Obviously my grandparents cannot speak English and I'm pushing a wheelchair and trying to find the correct window for the appointment because the speaker is low and I'm trying to manage several things at once. Apparently "is this the window for xyz" is too much for them and they have to answer rudely. "I don't know what you're talking about." The woman that helped us was understanding, though. window 12 is awesome. She was great and very attentive to my issues. She went above and beyond. She really helped me and gave me good information and didn't stop until she helped me get what I have spent a few month trying to get. The guards were very professional. Unlike what someone else said. You get what you give. They were all very courteous. The lines moved quickly. Once upstairs, it was very quick for the amount of people in front of me. 50 to be exact. I waited, maybe, 1 hour. Overall,I had a really good experience. I was surprised being all the bad experiences in the past with govt offices. I hope you have as good an experience as I did. Zero stars. Good luck trying to get though on the phone. If by some miracle you do get through, they will put you on "hold" only to hang up on you. If they don't hang up on you, a recording will come on after 30 minutes on hold stating to "try your call again later." If you are lottery lucky, you will speak to a human. Good luck trying to get accurate information from the human though. SSA, the biggest Ponzi scheme perpetrated on American workers since Bernie Madoff. They will take all of your money and only give you a portion of what you are entitled to when you come to collect, if there's any money left in the trust when you're actually eligible as they keep raising the age at when you can collect full benefits.
