I'm torn when it comes to this place. The low ranking is because the overall feel in this place while waiting. We'll start with the extreme safety precautions that are taking place here (think of TSA or jail) - you must have a face mask - security check point (take off your belt, leave your electronics, keys, etc. before going through) - about 5+ guards, 2 inside the waiting area and the rest in the security checkpoint Once you make it through security, you'll need to go to one of the kiosks and check in. Once you're checked in there, you'll be called to one of the windows to do another check in. At that point I had waited about 30 mins. When I checked in with one of the reps at the window I was told it would be another 30-45 min. Overall wait time wasnt too bad, about an 1hr 45 in total for not having an appointment. While waiting, you are not allowed to take phone calls in the waiting area and its library quiet. Your ticket number will blink on the tv display as your notification. Overall an okay place, but the experience was extremely sterile and uninviting. read more

Scheduling an appointment is a must. That said... I had an appointment for 9:20am and was seen earlier than that by using the mobile check in they texted me. I came with my daughter's birth certificate, an adjudication of paternity, DNA test through the courts, and her medical information just to have a stranger tell me that I am "not entitled" to order a copy of my own child's social security card. A little bit of understanding and compassion would go a long way. No man should have to go through the experience I just had. read more

I went to the SSA in Norfolk for a last name change. You don't need to make an appointment prior to coming, though it may help with you getting in-and-out quicker. I didn't make an appointment but was able to easily get a ticket number at the kiosk they have inside the SSA building. BEFORE you go inside, you should know that there is a metal detector at the front door and security guards who will ask you to take out all electronic devices and keys, etc from bags or pockets before entering. I had a metal item that I had to bring back to my car. The security guards were nice. There are guards in the seated waiting area as well who make sure everyone is safe. You can ask them questions about checking in and if you have to use the bathroom they will let the main staff know so they don't skip over to the next person in the queue. The waiting area was well lit and fairly clean, though I didn't use the restroom while I was there, so I can't speak to the cleanliness of restrooms. I came towards the end of the day around 2:00pm. It seems that the staff call people to the booths by ticket number quickly to learn what each person is there for and to make sure they have the proper documents. Then, after that initial call-up, they ask you to return to your seat to be helped further "shortly". My number was called within 20 minutes of getting to the SSA waiting area, but it took an hour and 45 minutes to be called back again to actually process my name change request. Once called back the second time, after an hour, 45 mins of waiting, it took about 15 minutes to process my request. Overall, while the wait was long, the staff were friendly. I find long waits at government and state agencies more pleasant and bearable when the staff is nice. read more

Hi! I personally had a very pleasant experience with the SSO. I arrived at 7:45 AM, however they do not open until 9am which I was awardee of. I had my breakfast in one hand and coffee in another. I went to get a replacement SS card, and was in and out within 30 minutes. I had my printed out application already prepped and I also was the first in line so the process went by very smooth. Despite all of the negative reviews about the customer service, everyone I encountered including the guards were very knowledgeable and professional. 10/10 experience for me. I just have to wait two weeks to get my replacement copy. read more

My is Adam. I am going thru a life changing event in not a good way. My bride of 18 years has gone to be with the lord. I have had to deal with many new obstacles since she past. I was dreading the social security end of all this. A representee named Lori, don't know her last name, helped me thru the in's and outs of the SS end of things. When i say it was the best thing that has happened to me since my wife passed is an understatement. The endless pit in my stomach has filled in. I have a long long road ahead but the way she spoke to me and treated me was a blessing from god i so deeply needed. Lori i hope you get this message. Can here today to get my name changed. We had to wait outside, but I had my water and headphones, as it says all over the webpage that you might need to, so come prepared. Got there at 10, was inside by 10:36. Nbd. Other people were complaining, but It wasn't bad at all. They just have to still follow Covid guidelines. The security officers were wonderful. They came outside often checking to make sure people didn't have anything that wasn't allowed, yet some how multiple people still flagged the mental detector and were shocked they had to put their knife back in the car, after being told to before hand. Ones inside a lot of chairs are blocked off so people aren't next to each other. I was seen by 11:05. The lady who helped me was wonderful and it took me no more then 5 minutes and I was out of there! Great experience, wonderful staff! I was worried it would be hours and it was smooth. read more

The place is a joke. Really. After waiting on the phone for hours at times and on other occasions having the 800 service call me back hours later, even in that organization, the Norfolk Va office is the butt of jokes. The 800 service connects the caller with some Social Security office somewhere....not where you think you are calling. My last experience was not helpful, nothing the person on the phone could resolve. He suggested I contact the local (Norfolk) office, but when the call ended he neglected to disconnect the phone and I listened to him and a colleague exclaiming about yet another call about "that Virginia office." Echoes my sentiments exactly. It is 1 July. Initially faxed their form for designation as a representative on 16 May. Today, it took six attempts to connect the fax, document transfer took moments - not seconds - when the machines actually connected, and the when I called-in to make sure they actually would act on the application, I was told that their fax is not working too well, no fax received today, and I need to come and sit in the office for a "space available" opportunity to actually speak to one of their folks.....not dejavu ... not even DMV. I waited on hold for 30 minutes just for someone to answer the phone and act like they couldn't hear me, the letter in the mail says if I have any any questions call the number at the top of this letter but there isn't any phone numbers at all on the letter. read more
