I read the bundle of awful reviews and I said...I gotta do it. Must do. Here I come at the new facility in South Salt Lake. Friday afternoon. I open the door and I am met with a wonderful, welcoming smile. Wrong location? Nope. No appointment and no worry. The government " greeter " working happily with no paycheck started this surprisingly positive experience. Two pretty stale security people were tough to break smile even with a thank. The modern waiting area was almost empty so a no appointment connect was easy thanks to the smiling welcome/greeter. 15 minutes and on my way to an almost pristine interview booth. Another smile and a beautiful Halloween attired SS staff member politely greeted me. Maybe 7 or 8 minutes later... done...factually verified and on my way. My recent visit to the local Social Security office wasn't as bad as I had feared it would be, nor was it a pleasure. Conveniently located in the heart of Salt Lake City, across from City Hall, the SS office is located on an upper floor of the large 80s style office building. A security checkpoint is located at the fifth floor office lobby's entrance and after being screened by security upon entering, one is directed to a kiosk where you are prompted to enter which department you need to deal with for your particular need. Once your data entered, a printed ticket is issued. Then, the wait begins, as you scan the digital monitors on the front wall over and over in hope that your number will be posted. Patience is required as it takes quite a while to get called to one of the windows behind which the human SS agents are located. My wait to be for my number to come up took about 1 1/2 hours, in a room that seemed to be about 1/3 full. The time it takes to be called is the real downside of visiting this office. Finally, when I approached the window of the agent who was to assist me, trying to create a human touch to our interaction, I commented about the nice view from her desk area. She agreed, took my paperwork and efficiently copied and entered the information as required. Her efficiency was commendable. I'm sure this is a thankless work environment and many situations are fraught with personal, life impacting issues that aren't easily solved. Luckily for me, everything in my case was straight forward and easily dealt with. After just a few minutes, my tenure in bureaucratic hell was over and I was happily on my way back to reality. Five stars for my agent's help, 1 star for having to wait in the queue for nearly two hours. read more

Doyle N. Waited for 11/2 hours and then left. Never made it to a window. Man and wife net to me waited 2 hours and was still there when my wife and I finally left. We road down on elevator from 5th floor with a couple and they were in and out in 45 minutes. None of us had appointments!!!!!! including the couple who road in elevator with us!!!! Now I am sure that no one from the social security office will see this and have zero explanation for this totally horrible service. I rated it with one star because that is the only choice you have. Frankly, I wouldn't give 1 star rating. No wonder the Social security system has such bad reviews. Does a review about a government entity really even matter? No, it won't change anything. But I'm writing this hoping that it will help people prepare for the experience. 1.) You're supposed to be able to request a replacement SSN card online. But for some reason, you can't do if you're requesting it in Utah. WTH? So you got to do it by mail or in-person. 2.) If you park in their parking lot, it's $3/hour. I'd pay for at least 2 hours because you don't know how long the line is once you get up there (5th floor). I paid $9 to be there for three hours. UGH. 3.) Brave yourself for a ridiculously long line, JUST to get through security. And don't bring a lot of stuff inside. Leave it in your car if you can. One guy had a Swiss army knife in his pocket and they made him go back down to his car to put it away. They only have one guard who inspects everything you bring in. 4) If you're applying for a new/replacement SSN card, fill out a form prior to coming or while you're waiting for your number to be called. 5.) Plan on being there for 2-3 hours. It's just like the DMV but WORSE. If you're planning on going during a lunch break, you can forget it. Waste of your time. read more

Kinda of weird to leave a review about the Social Security Office. In short, go to any SS Office other than this one. They are insanely understaffed. With 60-75 people in the waiting room, they have two windows open. I came in yesterday and it was so crazy that I decided to try again and this time arrive before they open. This place is great! I went in to change my name on my SS card, and I was in and out within 20 minutes. Parking: I parked on the west side of 200 East, just across from the Dunkin' Donuts. Street parking is only $2 per hour, which I think is cheaper and easier than dealing with parking garages. The entrance to the building is right next to Planet Fitness - hard to miss. The Social Security office opens at 9:00 AM, but I got there at 8:45 AM - only 6 people were ahead of me. They have security and a metal detector, so empty your pockets of keys, phone, etc. beforehand. I wasn't sure what forms of identification they would ask for, so I took my passport and birth certificate just in case. They only document they asked for was my marriage certificate. Side note: I was worried because my marriage certificate does not state my new name on it. However, they only need to see your marriage certificate to verify the reason for the name change, not the name itself. They give you a choice of keeping your maiden name as a middle name if you would like, or getting rid of the maiden name altogether. I'm sure they would let you hyphenate as well. The guy who helped me was quick, friendly, and efficient. Overall, my visit was MUCH faster and easier than I had anticipated. The only down side for me was their lack of phone service. I was never able to get in touch with a real person when I called their office number. It is just a never-ending automated system. Just go to the office in person. -1 star for their phone system. read more

Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and go deal with the Feds. In order to get my Utah Driver's License, I needed to replace my Social Security card. All of the details are on the website, along with a downloadable .PDF application form. And a list of what other items would be needed. But for certain things (card replacement included!) - you have to make a personal appearance at the office. East to find...big (pay) parking lot. Semi-private elevator. High-security metal-detector and armed-guards check you out as you enter. If you have and artificial titanium hip-replacement like I do... be sure to tell the security guy...so he doesn't think you are stowing a sawed-off shotgun down your pant-leg! Now what I DIDN'T see on the website was an option to make an appointment. I wish I HAD seen that, because without an appointment, I ended up sitting and waiting almost two-full hours. The waiting area is comfortable enough ... a big screen TV announces what number is being served... plus the agents cal out the number on a loud-speaker. But you had better watch the screen like a hawk ad forget about going to the bathroom. First the agents often call out the wrong number.... (Like saying "A-321" when it's really "A-320") Make sure to splurge and get that second-hour of parking if you don't have an appointment. You will never get out in under an hour!! read more

That's what I showed the snarky security guard as she closed and locked the glass door in front of our faces. I won't go into the detail of the heroic effort it took us to get there ON TIME from Park City, but we made it and were denied. Heartless. read more

Pay for parking!?! This is a Social Security office. People are on fixed incomes and shouldn't be expected to pay exorbitant fees to park. The wait is ridiculous. I have never experienced such difficulties at a Social Security office. Make an appointment before visiting so that you can be called to a window sooner. read more

Honestly, this location is bullcrap. I know anytime dealing with the government is a pain in the butt. I can't believe you have to pay to park here. What is my tax dollars going to? Than on top of that there is no ramp by the door, so if you have to bring your baby with the stroller it's sucks. I feel for those who are handicap who have to trudge up to this hell hole. normally i take reviews with a grain of salt but let me just say even the worst of these reviews didn't come close to how horrible my experience was here today. hog body male security guard kept making weird political statements.. as if anyone was listening or agreed. the lady security guard was literally the only person who was respectful and did her job without being an asshole. The male security guard was dumping everyone's bags out and shaking them- to the point where the girl security officer called him out- thank God she's there to keep his ego in check. I seriously felt like I was in an episode of What Would You Do? the way he was saying crazy crap like "I cant wait for trump to be president again" and "coronavirus is fake!". Not only are you stupid but you're clearly looking for attention. Leave your brain rot out of the workplace please!! Staff at the desk was completely unhelpful and shushed me before I even got 2 words out- she then proceeded to order me a new social security card without me even asking for one. I was like ?? that's not what I asked for. She just threw her hands up and said she can't help me and told me to have a good day before turning away.
