I read the bundle of awful reviews and I said...I gotta do it. Must do…read more Here I come at the new facility in South Salt Lake. Friday afternoon. I open the door and I am met with a wonderful, welcoming smile. Wrong location? Nope. No appointment and no worry. The government " greeter " working happily with no paycheck started this surprisingly positive experience. Two pretty stale security people were tough to break smile even with a thank. The modern waiting area was almost empty so a no appointment connect was easy thanks to the smiling welcome/greeter. 15 minutes and on my way to an almost pristine interview booth. Another smile and a beautiful Halloween attired SS staff member politely greeted me. Maybe 7 or 8 minutes later... done...factually verified and on my way. What a positive...satisfying...experience.

Conveniently located in the heart of Salt Lake City, across from City Hall, the SS office is located on an upper floor of the large 80s style office building. A security checkpoint is located at the fifth floor office lobby's entrance and after being screened by security upon entering, one is directed to a kiosk where you are prompted to enter which department you need to deal with for your particular need. Once your data entered, a printed ticket is issued. Then, the wait begins, as you scan the digital monitors on the front wall over and over in hope that your number will be posted. Patience is required as it takes quite a while to get called to one of the windows behind which the human SS agents are located. My wait to be for my number to come up took about 1 1/2 hours, in a room that seemed to be about 1/3 full. The time it takes to be called is the real downside of visiting this office. Finally, when I approached the window of the agent who was to assist me, trying to create a human touch to our interaction, I commented about the nice view from her desk area. She agreed, took my paperwork and efficiently copied and entered the information as required. Her efficiency was commendable. I'm sure this is a thankless work environment and many situations are fraught with personal, life impacting issues that aren't easily solved. Luckily for me, everything in my case was straight forward and easily dealt with. After just a few minutes, my tenure in bureaucratic hell was over and I was happily on my way back to reality. Five stars for my agent's help, 1 star for having to wait in the queue for nearly two hours.

So very tough to know how you rate an entire county. But this is really a review for the Salt Lake…read moreCounty building there on 21st and State in SLC. And it looks like each department there has their own listing. So let's stick to the overall complex here. First, it's a big old building and the layout has never made much sense. You have a north building and a south building (when visiting, note that you'll have a 2001 S. State Street address followed by N2100 or S1300 or whatever). The two buildings are connect by a sky bridge located on the third floor. Which is kind of a pain if you're going from N4200 to S2200, for example. You have to go down from 4 to 3, cross the bridge, then go down from 3 to two. Or go all the way down, walk out of the building, and go back up to 2. Does that seem horribly nitpicky? Well it is. And the fact that there's a sky bridge is great. So you'll find all kinds of services here--from USU Extension to the County Mayor's office to Health services and Human Services, the County Auditor, Assessor, and even a small branch of Mountain America Credit Union. I haven't been to the branch for years, but it's teeeeny and according to MACU's website it's still there in the South Building. Should you find yourself in the building it's probably for a very mundane or ever not-fun task. But these people are nice, generally speaking. And it ain't the DMV. This is where the heartbeat and pulse of county government happens. Oh, and the cafeteria isn't half bad!

Decently kind and efficient service. Paperwork, some lines, not as bad as you would think…read moreconsidering it's a state building. Been here twice for weddings. Obviously nothing elaborate, but it gets the job done and provides the desired results. State services, they're...efficient???

Painful experience trying to get a copy of a social security card. I called and got all…read moredocumentation and then when I show up, their parking lot is paid parking in advance ($3/hr) and the check in they ask you to remove everything from your pockets, including belts and if you have a small pocket knife with a one inch blade or clippers these are considers weapons and you have to take them back to your car, then when you return, I put my stuff in the tray and stepped through the scanner an they threatened to cuff me because I was not invited through the detector. The gun toting rent a cops are barely 21 and have little manners and public handling training and have no people skills. They like to try and spot threats and think that everyone is a threat and treat them as such and try to intimidate rather than seem to genuinely care about you. When you check in it asks if you have an appointment yet there is seeming no way to make an appointment. I can't do what I need to do via web site so I have to come in. There are no signs outside that Indicate what you may or may not bring in and that you will be scanned and checked. I guess it has been far too long since I have had to come to a facility like this and hopefully never again after this experience. I gave them one star because they are a necessity but man do they need to work on their rent a cop people skills and signage for information. And I have not even been to a window yet never mind the impossible wait...gaahaaa.... Edit: I wrote the above while waiting in line to be seen at a window. But after visiting with gentleman at window 2, the window officer was actually very good, kind, polite, and super helpful! I've given back two full stars for him. But man, the rent a cops at this location need some serious people skills training.
