We have taken a salsa / bachata group class before at SHDA, and we really enjoyed it. However, we had an even better time taking 1:1 lessons with Masha for our first dance. We started with a box step and then the second class, she went into choreographing our dance and teaching us the beginning parts of it. She was so patient and gave really helpful directions. We also made some adjustments to the dance midway through based on personal preference, and it was not a problem for her. We took 6 classes (in addition to the first free one), but we felt pretty confident after class 5 thanks to her and just added a 6 for one last practice and to figure out our transition from the entrance to the first dance. She really made it approachable and always asked if she could touch you to demonstrate a move, which is a small but important piece of making her students feel super comfortable. My partner and I went here because we found a gift card. (Where did we get it? I have no idea. It was on his nightstand so I think it was his, but it could have been a random Quizzo prize?) We had a private lesson with Millie, who is lovely! We didn't have much of an idea of what we wanted, so she taught a little bit of swing and then how to adapt that into a hustle. Neither of us is the most graceful and he's a lefty so we are always bumping into each other, but she was fantastic. There was a sales pitch at the end that we both expected, and it was very flexible with a lot of options. We are considering small group lessons or a group class. We took private dance lessons for our wedding with Julianna and she was wonderful to work with. We started with zero dance experience, only maybe dancing 2 or 3 times before as a couple. She was super patient and provided us with a dance routine that was easy to learn and really impressed our guests. We included our 6 year old in the lessons for a dad/daughter dance and Julianna was able to keep her attention and put together a great routine for them as well. It should be made immediately clear that this review applies to only the dance social and 45 minute beginner lesson only I have not taken any private lessons from society Hill ballroom academy. I can't speak much to the dance lessons as I just dropped in yesterday to attend the Friday night dance social and the open beginner Latin class. I had about three years previous experience dancing ballroom so the Latin class was more or less basic technique for those who had never danced before. After the beginner lesson the dance social was from 830 to 10 o'clock at night. It was a slightly older mid 30s and up professional crowd as would be expected at the dance studio. The dance space is small making it more suitable for social Latin dancing than anything else. During such dances as the foxtrot and waltz it was difficult to utilize the space effectively especially given the crowd of people on the dance floor and the one narrow point where you have to fit through a 5 foot or so hallway to get to the next part of the dance floor. That being said the quality of the dancers was about bronze/silver level if you are judging it based on the collegiate rating system. The big bonus is that almost all of the dance instructors attend the socials and you can easily single them out for dances which is a good time. Kathleen was an excellent dancer. It is a very low cost event and there is food and drink provided at the stand in the back which is great for struggling college or graduate students. read more

My boyfriend took here to Society Hill Dance Academy on Valentine's day weekend for a special couples lesson. When we arrived, dressed and excited to kick off our weekend after a nice dinner, we were told the lesson was actually on SUNDAY the 14th, not Saturday the 13th. The lady at the front told us 3 other couples made the same mistake...seems unlikely that we all made the same mistake of thinking it's on the 13th not 14th... Anyways, it was kind of a bummer to drive out here to be told the lesson was actually tomorrow. BUT. When we got there on Sunday evening, we were so thrilled with the lesson! We got there early enough to scope out the location, grab a couple glasses of the complimentary sangria (delicious) and play with the studio cat. There were four other couples that joined us. The studio is pretty small, but worked for the number of couples. he lesson was pretty basic - we had a tango class which lasted about 40 minutes, and some free time to dance at the end for about 10 minutes. It was tonss of fun and one of the best dates we have ever been on! None of us are dancers so learning the steps was interesting and new for both of us, and the instructor was very helpful (she had to drag me away for some 1-on-1 instructions a few times because I kept stepping on my bf's toes or trying to lead...oops) and lively! Keep in mind we didn't learn a TON but that also wasn't the point of the class. It was to enjoy the ambiance and each others' company while making compete fools of ourselves. I highly recommend the Valentine's day dance lesson! She does a class every hour in the evening and it's $40 per couple. Will be back next year! read more

My wife signed us up for dance lessons for our wedding almost on a whim because she didn't want our first dance to be boring. We ended up signing up for about 6 weeks of classes. Our song was Jesse Glynn's Hold My Hand and our instructor started us off with a bachata/rumba framework and ended up choreographing an entire routine for us. It's amazing how in 6 weeks you can go from nothing to a first dance you can be proud of and excited about. Taking dancing lessons was definitely a commitment of time and effort, but out of all the things we did planning for our wedding (flowers, photography etc) I would say this was the most meaningful. Wedding planning can be stressful, but our lessons at SHDA were something to look forward to. The instructors at Society Hill were great and they did so much for us. Prior to our wedding, my wife and I took seven dance lessons with Cat for our 'first dance' and the results were great! We went from robotic and stepping on each other's feet to feeling comfortable and looking like we knew what we were doing on our special day. I just posted this as a response to someone on the Talk section and realized I should post it as a review too! I rented out Society Hill Dance Academy for my best friend's bachelorette party. The cost was $20 per person with a 12 person minimum. I only had 10 and couldn't afford the rental on my own so I asked everyone to pay $25 and that covered the cost of 12 people for an hour and a half. So here's how the night went: We got there at 8:30pm and set up our own drinks and appetizers. The first 45 minutes were our own to mingle and eat and drink. I made it a lingerie party so the bride also opened presents during this time. The second 45 minutes one of the instructors gave us a private dance lesson. You can pick any style of dance you want, but we learned a burlesque style striptease, which was a BLAST! The owner's name is Shana and she was very helpful while I was planning everything. The studio is beautiful and Shana and the instructors were all very welcoming and energetic. It's also a perfect location to hop in a cab and go out after the dance lesson ends or even walk if the weather is nice. We parked our cars at a nearby garage ($4 all night parking if you get your ticket validated at the studio) and came back for them after we went out dancing. We had such a great time and I could not have asked for a more perfect party for my best friend. read more

I am an experienced dancer that has been doing it for the better part of five years now and my disappointment in SHDA was laughable. I found this studio, quite by accident, and was literally pulled in off the street during one of the socials that they held there. It was very fun and I enjoyed dancing with some of the students there. But when it cam time to work with a teacher the following week, I felt that I knew more than her, and I am really not that good. I began to quickly feel like I was being sold, which is to be expected since they need to sell lessons, but what they are charging and what they are offering do not match up. I am in a school now that is comparable in price to SHDA, but far more advanced instruction. I would not recommend this studio to anyone. Not even a beginner since a beginner will get better, and at this school, they will get better than the staff in a short amount of time. read more

The Thursday night social continues- $10 for general admission which includes random beverages and some snack platters (usually a fruit plate, a veggie+dip plate, sometimes cheese/salumi, sometimes salsa). A few more specifics- dance styles are geared slightly more towards American than International, and there is always a mid point break where Shana (the owner) makes some announcements, some of the students or wedding couples might do a mini showcase, and they run birthday dances. Intermediate Latin and Ballroom dancers should try out Society Hill's social dance on Thursday nights. Advanced dancers may end up teaching more than dancing all night, unless they come with a group of friends. Beginners will have more trouble because of the odd floor, the line of dance obstructions, and the lack of lesson. The students at Society Hill--who are the biggest patrons of the Thursday dances--are good, but the music variety, coupled with all the above will challenge all but the most precocious new dancers. Food is usually served at the social dance, and the admission price is reasonable. Dance lessons are available there also. Beginners who are interested in trying out Ballroom, and who aren't closer to another venue, should consider trying out dance here. read more

I took lessons at Society Hill Dance Academy for a year before I moved across the country, and by the time I moved, I had gotten to love this studio so much that it was one of the main things I was sad about leaving in Philly! Going to this studio one thing stands out - it's got heart. Shana, who runs the dance studio, is both an excellent dancer and instructor, but also a really great person. She even helps run a non-profit to bring dancing to disadvantaged kids. I decided to write a review when I saw some of the negative reviews based on the studio's prices and dancing packages. I've been to several other dance studios - a few in Philly, a few in Seattle, and even one in Los Angeles, and SHDA is actually a little less expensive than other places. News flash for people wanting to take dance - dance lessons are pricey. I'm not sure why, but expect to pay much more than you would if you were playing an instrument. That's just the going rate at studios (Arthur Murray, the most ubiquitous dance program in the US, is priced even higher). As for feeling like someone is trying to sell you a dance package, well, sure. This isn't the grocery store - you're not necessarily going to come back when you run out of dance moves. Maybe it depends on the teacher, but I found myself eager to buy the next package of dance lessons because I was having such a great time and my dancing was improving so much. Ultimately, the studio is about learning and loving to dance, and I've never seen a studio that does it with so much passion. If you're not sure, come to one of their parties - there are themes, snacks, tons of people dancing, and a few times a year they have a live band playing. See for yourself! They have a lot of long-time students who are regulars at the Friday night dance parties, and they keep coming back for a reason. My wife and I had a FANTASTIC time here! We worked with Ro (Rohit) to perfect our first dance for our wedding, knowing only that we wanted to dance to Perfect by Ed Sheeran before playing two Bollywood songs. Ro took our unusual request and ran with it, teaching us how to rock the Viennese Waltz before easily pulling out Bollywood, bhangra, and other types of choreography for us to make our first dance the best it could possibly be. Based on my and my wife's experience, the Society Hill Dance Academy is an outstanding place to learn dance, and the instructor my we had, named Rohit Bobby (he goes by Ro for short), was top notch. In order to make my point, it is necessary to tell our story of the experience we had. About two months before our wedding, my then fiancé Jessica and I went to the Society Hill Dance Academy for help choreographing our first dance to Michael Jackson's "Rock With You." Neither of us had ever taken a dance lesson before. Upon arriving, we were introduced to Ro, who promptly moved us into a private room. We discussed what we had in mind for our dance, so he listened to our song, and upon completion informed us that we would be doing a dance known as "the hustle," which is a common style of partner dance. After a good first class in which Ro began to show us some of the movements involved in the hustle, we signed up for a series of eight lessons, with the final lesson being less than a week from our big day. Jessica and I are both athletic and decent freestyle dancers, but performing a choreographed dance is totally different. It requires learning a new skill, and in order to get comfortable with our dance, that necessitated a great deal of practice. Our lessons were spent rehearsing and repeating the movements Ro taught us, and he would always add something new to each lesson to keep moving us forward. We were always assigned "homework," which was to simply practice our moves at home to our song. Believe me, if you are reading this review for purposes of choreographing your first wedding dance, or any other reason for that matter, you will need to practice. I don't care how good you think you are; you suck. If you have never partner danced, you will be like a fish out of water, and will require constant, perhaps even daily practice in order to legitimately feel all of the moves and know you can execute them without having to think too much about them, especially during an emotionally charged day with an audience. Ro hammered us about practicing, and like any good teacher, he could tell right away if we had been putting in the appropriate amount of practice between lessons. Practicing your dance is not as easy as it sounds, because when you are planning a wedding, you have a lot going on, and you will probably need to be disciplined enough to schedule time to practice. As far as the many unknowns surrounding our wedding day, I was most concerned about nailing our dance. We were investing time and money into it, and I wanted it to look polished. After our ceremony, Jessica and I were able to spend a few private moments in the bridal suite practicing one last time, especially some of the trickier movements that we hoped to seamlessly incorporate into our routine, and the fun opening and closing sequences that Ro put together for us. We were rehearsing our dance up to within thirty minutes of actually performing it. I can say with absolute certainty that those final few rehearsals made all the difference in the world for our confidence in our ability to perform the dance with a large audience and a sea of distractions. At any rate, we went out there and pretty much killed it. Everyone was very impressed with our dance, and it was apparent to all in attendance that a sizable amount of work went into the finished product. Aside from having a great knowledge of the science of dance, Ro was simply a good teacher. I myself am a golf instructor, and I know that the effective teachers teach people more than they teach golf. Ro had this approach to dance, as he built a relationship with us, and held us accountable to work on and perfect what he was teaching us. He was very invested in our success, and truly wanted us to perform well. I personally had the sense that if we did not do a good job with our dance, we would not just be letting each other down, but Ro as well. I was very impressed by his instruction, professionalism, and how well our dance came out as a result. We were even given the opportunity to do a dry run of our completed dance in front of a small crowd in the studio in order to mentally prepare to have eyes on us. Looking back, I feel that the experience was good for us as a couple. We had to work on this dance together, starting from absolutely zero, until we had a finished product that we were ready to put on display in front of close to two hundred people. Learning dance can also do a lot of good in forcing would-be dancers out of their comfort zones, risking embarrassment, and forcing them to develop a sense of self-deprecating humor. We did not just learn a dance- we grew as a couple as well, and managed to have a lot of fun doing it, too. We had our wedding reception at SDHA and we could not have asked for a better place. The location is very convenient for the guests, the caterer (Infinity Caterers) was outstanding and the venue itself is ideal for a wedding under 120 people. We had about 90 people and it was perfect. The existing decorations and paintings added a nice twist to the venue that is hard to recreate in your average wedding venue. Ten years ago I made one of the most consequential and best decisions of my adult life: I decided to walk through the doors of the Society Hill Dance Academy. I'm often asked what got me started dancing and what's kept me dancing. For the first part of that question, near as I can remember it went something like this: About a year before I was on PhillyTonight looking for pictures of my friends and I out the previous weekend when I saw a banner ad (remember those?) for "Society Hill Dance Academy". Curious about it I clicked on the ad, bookmarked the page that opened, and then kinda forgot about it for a while. Fast forward a year later and friends of mine from the crew team at SJU were getting married a month from the time I started dancing. I always wanted to learn how to dance and figured I could learn all I needed to in 30 days . Like any former rower when approaching any thing other than rowing I though "How hard could this be? I rowed!" I sat in the parking lot of my gym the day before starting, punched the number into my phone, spoke to a young woman on the other end of the phone, and booked a lesson for the next day. The rest is history. Why I actually stayed though? I could talk about how I'm naturally competitive and want to be the best at something. I could mention what the confidence feels like to walk into a room and absolutely know that you can get any woman (or man for that matter) to dance 75% of the dances you know within a minute. I could say it is great for networking and keeping the mind active. I could point out that unlike other dance studios I've been to in the past there is a genuine desire among the instructors at the studio that students learn, and how never once have I ever been made to just feel like a walking dollar sign. There is the fitness aspect to it, the fun aspect to it, but most importantly there is the family aspect to it. "The people" are why I stayed at SHDA. My "dance family" is just as real and important to me as my flesh and blood family. It has grown over the years and although people come and go and sometimes we are separated by great distances, every person I've met and have known and interacted with for a long period of time is important to me. Whether those people have changed jobs, changed life circumstances, have moved across the city, moved to the suburbs, moved to different states, or moved to different countries....they are all my family and though I don't see them all like I used to, they are never far from my mind. I look at my life now and it is almost as though I was a whole different person then. So much has changed in 10 years. I've said goodbye to the house I grew up in and live in my own house now. I've had different jobs since then, different cars since then, different ways of thinking about the world since then. I've experienced incredible and devastating personal loss since then and great and monumental personal gain in that time too. I've made countless people I consider friends. I've gone to countless places and had experiences that I never would have had otherwise. I've been in plays....hell I've been in musicals for crying out loud! I've been to countless weddings, countless societal dance occasions, countless venues. I've been asked to warm up the dance floor for company Xmas parties for which I don't even work, have been asked to be a bouncer once, have been invited to black tie fundraisers for free, and have performed on stage more times than I can remember......all because of dance. Would I have quite a bit more money had I decided not to dance all those years ago? Most definitely. Would I be poorer in literally every other observable aspect of my life had I decided not to dance all those years ago? Absolutely, utterly, and without a doubt. I tell new dancers that when I first started dancing all those years ago I looked at people that have been dancing as long as I have and thought "Damn....I have a lot to learn!" Now, 10 years later and I look at the instructors and when they dance I go "Damn....I have a lot to learn!" It never stops. There is always something to learn, something to improve upon, something to change. I am not connected to the owners and I got no freebie or anything else for writing this review. I did see that Yelp had a review posted on this business that contained absolutely false and defamatory statements about this wonderful studio, so I am writing this one. I have taken lessons there for over 5 years. I started by taking wedding lessons with my wife, and continued on my own. I reached a level of being a comfortable, confident, successful competitive ballroom dancer. They have cheap group lessons, or private lessons priced at the usual rates for that, and below some of their major competitor studios in Phila. The facilities are excellent, and the staff is non-judgemental and competent. The atmosphere is friendly and fun. Students of theirs regularly go to national ballroom dance competitions and win in their categories, if that is of interest to you - or they just teach good social dancing and have party and trip opportunities. My 10 year old daughter has been there and had fun and learned to perform as well. read more
