We stayed in this hotel 10 years ago and it was old then but clean and we loved that there was no service or TV! Just stayed again and now has TV still no cell service in Cooke City and that's fine by me! We were a little worried after reading reviews but were pleasantly surprised by updated and clean rooms! There have also been reviews about the non English speaking ownership but we found it to be fine. They were all friendly and spoke well enough English. They don't have anyone working the front desk so not being able to call was annoying but we got over it. We didn't eat in the restaurant so cannot comment on that. We had 2 rooms this time and both were wonderful!

Unfortunately the Soda Butte Lodge leaves a lot to be desired. It's just...weird. The outside looks fun and welcoming but inside, its just dingy, run down, dirty and awkward. I didn't even want to take out my phone for pics. Everyone in the bar dining room just kind of sat and stared at you... Maybe it was just me? Idk! The only reason to give this more than 1 star is that the food was actually really good. The Pastrami burger was tasty and filling. The beer was advertised as a Blood Orange IPA, but it was clearly a Blood Orange Blonde. It was fine. It was the only thing open. It was a nice day. It just needs a ton of work.

Stay somewhere else. My husband and I stayed here for the festival last weekend and let me just say the customer service was the best part and it was terrible. Our room another level....mold under our sink and along the bathroom walls, there was hair all over the bathroom and the carpets were disgusting! It was apparent the room hadn't been cleaned in a long time. We left at 5:00 am because there was no way anyone was going to actually sleep/shower! Positive...the pass at sunrise!

    Fly strip...yummy! Look up!

Flies! Soggy fries and the smell of mothballs!!! Only game in Cook City in late November.

In a panic as I am at the top of the Beartooth Mountain pass, luckily I had cell service and called the hotel. The pass is closed! Even though google maps showed it was open, this goes to show to call the hotel first. I gave the lady my name and explained I had a reservation for check in that day. She and another lady confirmed a re-route (that I could see on Google maps) that was open, adding 3 hours to my drive. Our conversation lasted about 30 minutes, but we figured it out. Whew! I finally arrived at the hotel, and the hotel didn't have my booking.com reservation on file. This was the only way I could see how to book a room in advance, and this was the penultimate town prior to the northeast Yellowstone entrance. I was lucky there was a room available, but apparently new management was bought on January 24th. I had booked on January 20th. At first, my rate was going to be about $159 pre-surcharges, but I asked if there was some sort of AAA rate, which knocked off about $20. I did contact booking.com, but no response. So, do not use them to book this hotel! I was initially given a room on the second floor, and I asked where the elevator is. The front desk lady said there is no elevator. I told her I had about 50lbs of luggage, and she replied, "You'll be alright." I started flipping my luggage up the stairs because it's easier than carrying. About halfway up, she called my name and said, "I have a first floor room available!" So, I threw my luggage down the stairs to the corner, and the lady took my luggage down the rest of the way. "You'll be alright," she said. There was no apology. I should note even the first floor rooms have a few stairs, so if you are in a wheelchair, I would not recommend this place. The room was basic, but clean for the most part. The view outside my window was gorgeous. I do not believe there is air conditioning, and I was not able to figure this out. I could only work a heater. There was no dial tone for the phone in the room, so I was not able to ask the front desk regarding this late at night, and there's no cell service available for calling. Instead, I opened the windows and luckily it was cold enough outside to function as air conditioning (about 45 degrees). I did end up closing one of the windows (the one without a screen) because it was cold. I did like hearing Soda Butte Creek right next to me, and this functioned as a white noise machine. The walls are EXTREMELY thin. You can hear EVERYTHING next door, even when your neighbor slides the hanger on the rack. You can hear someone's alarm, coughing, talking, etc., and you can hear this outside the door as well if there is conversation in the hallway. If you want to sleep in, but no one else on the floor wants to sleep, you are out of luck! I should note there are a few items amiss in a hotel that are standard in many others - a peephole so you can see out your door, a deadbolt, and a do not disturb sign. I do not know what you do to prevent hotel staff from barging in. Housekeeping starts before 8AM, so these things would be helpful! In the morning when I was ready to checkout, the lady just said, "Ok." There was no offer of a receipt or inquiries about the status of my stay. Thus, I asked for a bill with a zero balance. This is a habit I developed with a former employer while traveling, and it's not necessarily a bad one. This is typical of the standard hotel chains, but I received an eye roll from the front desk lady. It was like I was asking for something SO foreign. So much for new ownership knowing how a hotel operates! I give one star because of check in/check out problems and room issues. A friendly approach from the staff would go a long way. If I come back to Cooke City, I think I'd rather stay at the Super 8 hotel down the street! Room rate $137.50 Room tax $9.63 Resort tax $4.13 Total $151.26

If you're interested in watching a sporting event, they had a ton of screens to view. We started our meal with the spinach dip. Our server, Abby, suggested we order some extra crostini to go with it. At first it seemed like she was just trying to upsell us, but it was totally the right call. The dip was excellent and the crostini was not the usual hard bread that a lot of places have. For my entree, I got the chicken burger, which was basically just a grilled chicken breast on a bun. The taste was fine, but the grilled onions saved it. Others at the table got the Caesar salad and a pizza. They all said they were OK, but nothing extraordinary.

Unfortunately, when we got there ( at 7pm on Saturday night) they were already out of the bison. We originally thought about leaving, but then decided to just try something else. Also, I know that I did not expect the best I've ever had, ordering seafood at a restaurant in Montana. This is just to let everyone know, whatever you do, do not order the Cajun shrimp. It was the worst shrimp I've ever had. It was so overcooked it had the consistency of a hockey puck, and the seasoning tasted as if it was marinated in balsamic vinegar-nothing remotely Cajun about it. It was a cool experience, with the pig races, and my husband's ribeye was decent. Just don't order the Cajun shrimp!!

The bar tenders (there were 3 by my count) were not able to keep up and seemed disoriented with the drinks in the bar (was this their first night?!?). Took about 15 minutes to cash out our tab.
