The next time I was on Sunset Dr. in South Miami I made it a point to stop by. While not very big, Urben Gifts and Gadgets, established in 2017, is loaded with a lot of unique items. They sell toys, games, jewelry, baby items, candles, mugs, clocks, home goods, and more. There are all kinds of interesting gifts for men, women, and children for occasions such as holidays, showers, birthdays, and anniversaries. Items are thoughtfully arranged in categories like sports fans, artist, or chef. Prices are on the expensive side. but if money is no object, they have a great selection of presents sure to delight their recipient.

The Miami Fair Trade Market is located in the beautiful and historic Coral Gables United Church of Christ. The church was built in the 1920's by Coral Gables founder and designer George Merrick in honor of his father Solomon who was a minister. It is located across the street from the Biltmore Hotel. The idea for the shop came from senior pastor, Rev. Laurie Hafner, who wanted an alternative in Miami to all the shops that use child labor, sweat shops, and ither inhumane practices. The mission is to "support artisans in over 30 developing countries by purchasing their indigenous products made under safe working conditions. Whole village standards of living are raised with trade, not aid. Fair Trade is a trading partnership based on dialogue, transparency, and respect. This system of exchange seeks to create greater equity and partnership in the international trading system." You can rest assured that the mainly women artists are paid a fair wage and there is no child labor involved. I love the message of this shop, a hand up not a handout. It is small but carefully curated with beautiful and affordable things. I ended up purchasing a bracelet made of clay beads hand rolled in Haiti for my friends present. I was able to include a card in the organza bag my bracelet was placed in that explained the meaning of it. After looking through all of the beautiful jewelry I ended up purchasing a silver chain from Bali and paperclip link chain as an early birthday present for myself. The shop also sells award winning olive oil, notecards made by a local artist, tunics, gorgeous scarfs one of which was modeled by Ruth Bader Ginsburg in a picture, hand made toys, and accessories. They even have some Easter items in right now. You can read little signs about the items you are purchasing and the part of the world your purchase is benefitting. Donna helped me and I left feeling like I made a friend. I can't say enough good things about this precious shop. Follow their Facebook page and Instagram to see what is new. There are myriad unique gift items that you can't find anywhere else! The clerk Donna is friendly, knowledgeable, and extremely helpful. I purchased an item called The African Safari Tea Party with beautifully hand-carved little animals, each surrounded by teacups while sitting around an exquisitely carved, hand-painted table. ALL of these pieces were only $42.00. There is such a wide variety of items to choose from and stories to go with some. The items are very reasonably priced. The jewelry and clothing are breathtaking and completely unique. Shopping at Fair Trade is an eye-opener and a sheer delight. I recommend it highly - not to mention, your purchase is a step forward toward the eradication of poverty, while creating higher standards of living for the artisans and their families. I drove all the way from my home in Homestead to this store in Hialeah because I had just been given an invitation that day to a retirement party of an executive within the company. The retirement party was within a week and I did not have much time to go shopping around for a gift. I also did not want to take the risk of ordering a gift and it not coming on time. So I made the long drive (and for those of you who have made the long journey during rush hour to Hialeah know how long the drive it truly can be!) to Things Remembered in Hialeah hoping I could find a tasteful gift for someone who always was kind, helped me learn a number of things about the business I am in and who also helped me in my career. The store is beautiful. It is decorated very tastefully and all that it sells is displayed neatly. The store also has several quotes about life, love and friendship which are inspiring and because this store is about custom gifts certainly fits with the essence of what this store is about. It's about getting something nice for someone you care about. The quotes include: 1) "Every gift from a friend is a wish for your happiness". 2) "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take your breaths away". 3) "A friend is someone that knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words". Admittedly I am such a sucker for things like the above. This store sells lots of items that all can be personally engraved including graduation gifts, wedding gifts, flasks, knives, watches, jewelry boxes, music boxes, etc. I found a money clip and cuff links that I paired together since they were the same design. The price just for the items was a bit over $100 which was more than I expected to pay for because I saw a set online for $65. So understand that sales you see online or items may not be found on the physical store. I then paid a bit extra to engrave my friends initials on the items. I also found a multitool for my father for $25 which was the same price on their website. I also then got his initials set on the item for a bit more. Wonderful experience...like always. The two employees at the store were so helpful and friendly...but that has happened every time I have come here for years. This is why I have been buying at this store for years and even though it's a drive I will continue to come here if I need to get someone whether they be a friend, loved one or mentor a really nice gift.

This is a good place to check out when buying gifts for weddings and special occasions, or when you want to find something that will be personalized and have a bit more meaning than an "off the shelf" item from a department store. Things Remembered is also a great place to buy items for employees when you want to reward them or give them a special memento. They have several different displays with mugs and glasses, key chains, Zippo lighters, pen and pencil sets, pen knives, money clips, jewelry, desk sets, business card holders, paper weights, plaques and lots of other items. They'll also personalize and engrave items that you bring in to their shop. There are a few things to keep in mind when doing business with this company: 1) While "Things Remembered" has a good website, some of the items and prices that they have on the site aren't available in their stores (and you cannot order online and pick up your item in their stores). 2) Engraving seems to be much cheaper through their website than it is in their stores. 3) Though most of their items are reasonably priced, know that engraving is not included in the purchase price in most cases. Having items engraved can double or nearly triple the initial price of the item in most cases. When I was here recently, the woman told me their rule of thumb when engraving is that it usually costs about $15 for 5 letters, and about $20 to engrave a date. This means that if you find a $20 gift in the store, plan on spending about $50 or more once it's engraved. That being said, if this is a gift for someone special or an employee reward, this may still be within your price range.
