Over…read morethe past few years, I've noticed them disappear in other nearby suburbs such as Cookridge and Adel, but this one on Town Street has held its ground. It offers a pretty impressive selection of fresh fruit and veg, some of which is local, and all of which is more appealing than that which is on offer just up the road in Morrisons. It will probably cost you more per item than the supermarket, but for those people who like to feel, admire and choose their own groceries, this is a small price to pay.

Of all the greengrocers I have seen, I have never once comented on a beautiful display. Normally, it comes part and parcel of having a fruit and veg shop, and the produce is just stacked up, without having had much thought put into it. Neil's however is the exception. With carrots fanned out and everything looking perfect in its place, thought has evidentally gone int every inch of the stall, and quite frankly it is the most tempting fruit and veg stall I have ever seen! Fantastic. Prices are competitive, but not a patch on what you'd pay elsewhere.

I was attracted to this shop by the large selection of flowers that lay outside it. The shop faces…read moreinto a small courtyard space, which was fully utilised by being filled with rows and rows of neatly laid out trays and pots of flowers and herbs, on the ground. A few were lined up on the two tables outside of the shop. It was a beautiful day and with the lovely colours of the flowers, it put me a thoroughly good mood. It wasn't until I went into the shop to buy one of these pots that I realised in the seasonal absence of flowers this was a traditional green grocers. With supermarkets buying up every available space its not so common to see a shop selling just fruit and vegetables these days. Although there were a few eggs and bottles of milk for sale also, sourced from a local farm, I noticed from the label. The inside of the store was a pleasing to the eye as the outside, with the large colourful array of foods spread out neatly.

If, like me, you ever struggle to choose between about three sandwhich options then you may be liable to be frozen in cant-decide panic at the endless choices presented to you by Abu Bakar! Even the halva section appears to be never ending! They sell a wide selection of vegetables, a broad variety of juices, endless rows of pulses, spices, herbs, cakes, bread, jars of pickled items, huge sacks of rice and flour - possibly aimed at businesses but may be handy if you live in a big house, loads of condiments (including some very mysterious and tantalising items such as a pot of chololate and cherry something...spread?...whose ingredients list was in Polish only). Homeware-wise they have pots, pans, crockery and kitchen utensils. There is also a halal meat counter. As Susan mentions, Abu Bakar is aimed at the Aisian community, but for anyone like me with boringly British culinary habits it is a fascinating and exciting place of endless possibilities and obscure and intriguing ingredients.

The staff are really helpful, and the nearby parking means it's ideal if you need to do a large shop but don't want to do the supermarket run. Worth stopping by to check out the huge range of exotic fruit juices - hangover heaven.

They are a proper fruit and veg place with the stacks of goodies out front to lure you in and a huge array of produce inside under bright, but a nice glowing type lighting. They sell all kinds of English vegetables and fruits plus a few more exotic types to boost your vitamin C intake. I was really pleased to find it whilst walking through the cold, and feeling in need of some nutrients. I purchased a bag of about 15 apples for £1 and eyed up the flowers loads while I paid. I don't have anyone to buy flowers for, and by the time the lovely girl at the counter had processed my purchase I still hadn't justified buying flowers for myself and walked out. Silly girl. I should have done! They would have looked lovely in a nice vase. Next time I will. When I called up today to check their opening times I spoke to a very lovely guy with the thickest Leeds accent ever who said "Seven over five love" Lovely lovely lovely! If you are in that area and are in need of some yummy juicy goods, packed with nutrients and minerals then pop in for a chat and a bag of deliciousness. They are open every day!

Selling a full array of Caribbean foodstuffs, including seasoning, scotch bonnet peppers, plantain for cheaper than you'd find it anywhere else, and dried fish for £6. As somebody who absolutely loves the firey sweet and sour flavours of the Caribbean, this place is a jewel not to be missed.

The staff seemed as helpful as the Headingley lot, the prices were just as cheap and the stock just as wide ranging! What could be better than buying a decent bunch from the local fruit and veg shop, as opposed to the aforementioned supermarket, by Amy P? With red and green seedless grapes at 69p per lb, a sack of potatoes to feed the masses at £3.95, 8 clementines at 99p and even blooming duck eggs, for crying out loud, at 29p what could be more exciting and reasonably priced than R K Harris and the boys? I think my only option is going to be to check out if my local Headingley branch sells duck eggs, and start looking up some recipes. Yey!

Wow this was an absolute delight to go to last weekend, I can't believe I have lived in Leeds all…read morethese years and never been before. I didn't actually believe that anything substantial, let alone good, could take place in the small rose garden outside of the bar, The Arc, in Headingley. It just looked too small. But when I went last weekend it was like the space had magically morphed and increased in size! There were stalls selling organic vegetables, fruit, cheese, local wine, local meat, cakes, bread, Indian food, eggs, even a stall selling plants from a nursery in Pudsey. They had some pots of raspberry stems but I was on my bike so I couldn't get them home. Fortunately, I got their card and might pop along during the week to pick some up as they were a good price and I know they will work on the allotment as they have been grown in Leeds. Besides the market stalls there was a live band! This made it for me as usually at farmers markets you want to linger a bit but once you've made your purchases can't really find a reason to but the band was the perfect Saturday morning entertainment. If you haven't been down you better give it a go!

With stalls selling tasty organic vegetables, free-range eggs the size of your palm, fresh fish and meat, artisan cheeses and a whole host of seasonal, local treats, this market, held the second Saturday of each month, turns the weekly shop into a day out in its own right. There are always plenty of free samples to taste, and with each purchase helping to support local farmers and keep your food miles low, stuffing your face has never felt so good!

As independent little places go Oakwood fruits is one of the nicer kept fruit and veg shops to…read morevisit. The owners are friendly, the produce is well kept and the prices aren't too bad. I must admit I thought they might be slightly cheaper but they certainly weren't more expensive than the supermarkets nearby so all's not lost. They sell all the basics, and then some, in terms of fruit and veg. I noted all kinds of standard items, potatoes, tomatoes, oranges, bananas and more, as well as quite a few interesting things such as dates, celeriac and figs. Having never tried figs before I purchased 3 for £1 and they were really lovely. I had to ask the lady and chap if they were ready, having never purchased them before, and apparently I chose well as they were just right! Although their asparagus bunches match my Sainsburys in price (£2.99 for a bunch) they totally beat them for mandarins (5 for £1.00 I do believe) so it's a case of win some lose some I guess. They also happen to sell a number of different bird seeds and feeders, just in case you were interested. In any case, this is a lovely little fruiters to visit if you happen to be along Street Lane.

It's not as small as it appears from outside, and the choice of all things healthy inside is marvellous. As with most greengrocer's, prices a are little higher than the supermarkets, but the quality is higher too. And they also sell flowers!
