Fortunately I called ahead to set up a tour (205-5404754) because they are only open Saturday 11-4. What a gem in local history and artists. They had just opened a section on "Wheels" by George T Anderson, Jr on the history of wheels brought to life with hand carved and handmade examples throughout time. There was a native American section with more arrowheads than I have ever seen collected. A 2 seater outhouse and an African-American musician section. Loads of local history and so many other sections to see. We were there almost 2 hours and you could easily spend more time if you wanted. If you are looking for a unique experience this is the place to go!

Chef Dan is the greatest chef south of Charleston. It's worth staying at the Elkorn just for the meal. The artwork Elisse has placed around the inn is at a level of quality of a Park Slope gallery. What's most surprising is that it's pretty much the only game in town, but is a place I'd choose first even if there was a lot of competition. If there's a drawback, it's that it's directly across from the train tracks and they are very busy. But choose a room on the far side of the inn and you'll be ok. If I'm back in McDowell County, I'll be staying at Elkhorn again.

Figured it was worth it as it was getting dark and Beckley is 30 some miles away. The hotel is situated 3 miles from downtown Welsh on Hwy 16 (Stewart Street).It's a very quaint motel. Met the clerk at the motel (who met us at the office since no one is there 24/7) and checked in which was a very easy process. She was very personable and friendly. She informed they recently got a new mayor who is very ATV friendly....which hopefully will boost business. The room was very clean and loved that it included a refrigerator and microwave. The tiled bathroom floor and tiled entry area were pretty sticky and the carpet didn't look completely vacuumed. But overall the cleanliness was good. There isn't a coffee maker in the room but I did notice there is one in the lobby. But since no one is in the lobby 24/7 and it remains locked, I'm not sure how someone would access it. There is WIFI but it was pretty weak...assuming the equipment is in the office and my room was the farthest one away. Overall, it's a cute motel that's comfortable and has most of the necessities. It sure beats driving in the dark on some of these windy roads. Highly recommend!

Upon arrival, I found the layout and appearance to be totally charming. The look and feel is exactly that of a 1940's and 1959's era motor court. After checking in, I was pleased to find a spacious, clean room. We had a regular room, and our friend had one of the cabins. The regular rooms are somewhat larger, with more space for comfort. The decor is a bit odd, with some elements like the bathrooms dating the 1970's. The paint looks relatively recent, and everything is well maintained. Parking isn't bad, but the entry to the lot from the road needs some work, due to a lot of potholes. The pool is clean and well maintained. The only problem we had is that another guest parked their trailer in a way that blocked access to the cabin parking space. The manager was reluctant to ask the guest to move it, but eventually did and the trailer was moved. I highly recommend this motel when traveling in the area (Back of the Dragon!), and look forward to my next stay.

It was one of the most delicious things I've ever eaten. We also had grilled chicken, sautéed vegetables, roasted potatoes, salad, death by chocolate and banana pudding. Everything was so fresh and flavorful. The banana pudding was fantastic.

It was so good that we placed an order for Easter even though it was just for the two of us. We might have eaten our Easter dinner Saturday night but there's no guilt. Again, their food was delicious but the star of the night was the carrot souffle. I think I might have to eat it for breakfast.
