I love Sonic. If anyone hasn't been yet, I highly recommend taking a little road trip to have some. The night before my husband and I investigated the Sonic web site. Unfortunately when we got there and what was on the web site was slightly different from what was in front of us. I had the #2 SuperSonic Cheeseburger with a Cherry Limeade and instead of fries I had Tater Tots. I did the free Route 44 Upgrade and received a giant tub of Cherry Limeade. The burger is just a normal greazy burger. You just cant go wrong on their burgers. My husband had a small Chocolate Shake and a #5, The Bacon Cheeseburger Toaster. A bacon cheeseburger on Texas Toast. I wanted a bite but I was so into my burger I forgot to ask. The Chocolate Shake was perfect. He also had, instead of fries, the Jalapeno Poppers. They had a really cute name that I cant remember right now. They were absolutely perfect poppers. Our food was served hot, which at the Sonic in American Canyon our sides were cold but still good. I go to this location 2-3 times a year to get the family Blasts. The speed of service at this Sonic has always been horrible and typically took 30-40 minutes to get through the drive through. I started ordering from the app 2 visits ago and it was easy in and easy out within a few minutes of arriving. I placed an order through the app again tonight and pulled into one of the stalls and pressed the intercom button. A minute goes by and a lady comes on and rudely says "The stalls are closed tonight because we are extremely short staffed" and disconnects without allowing me to say anything. I ring back and let her know that I placed an order with the app. She irritatedly tells me "you'll have to come through the drive through, we don't have time to walk orders out." This defeats the purpose of ordering through the app. Going through the drive through is exactly what I want to avoid. Had I known I would have had to go through the drive through I wouldn't have ordered. The lady at the window was nice enough but when I asked if she was the person who spoke to me over the intercom she said no. I had to press to find out who it was and she let me know it was her boss. The lady at the window hesitantly told me her boss's name is Jessie when I asked. I pulled out exactly 30 minutes after placing my order. I feel for restaurant workers during this time, however they do not have to have cruddy attitudes. An apologetic tone when telling me the stalls are closed and again when I was told I would have to go through the drive through would have went a long way and left me a lot less irritated at this experience. I just realized you can't give 0 stars on Yelp. So I got really excited to try this place when I saw it on my way from a deposition in Modesto. I've seen ads for it everywhere - in beauty mags and tv and movie commericals. It was around 2p and I ordered the California Burger (thousand island, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, onions and beef - they offered jalepenos and bacon but I declined). I got the combo with the tater tots. This is the nastiest shit ever! Remember high school cafeteria food where the burgers tasted like they were defrosted off the Sysco truck only an hour before (kinda like TV dinner, but worse)? Well, if you're craving that nastiness and the equally salty and gross tater tots, come here. The CA burger was a poor copy of In & Out's cheeseburger - now I know why Sonic did not open a restaurant in the South Bay (it would clearly fail, but at least they know that!). Also, it didn't help that the I didn't realize there were onions on my burger since they only asked about bacon and jalepenos (maybe b/c they are extra?). The raw onions were mixed into the lettuce, but into half inch portions so I couldn't pick them out clearly while driving the car. Instead, I just chucked the burger b/c I couldn't justify injesting calories for this crap. The only good thing was that the service at the drive-thru was good and quick. They have a cool set-up outside where it's like a drive-through and they bring their food to you. They also have happy hour where things are cheaper (but are still not worth it even if it were free in my opinion). In conclusion, they should spend their marketing/ad expenses on R&D. Tater tots, FTW! I've had pretty good luck with Sonic all over the country with the exception of the first two visits in Orlando where they wouldn't answer the box at new store. This one didn't seem to have much space, squeezed between two other businesses. Answering the box (that's how you order) was reasonably quick. We ordered a couple of burgers. I'm glad that they mentioned that there was mayonnaise on them, so I could omit it. Many places don't even mention it. We ordered one each, tater tots and fries, and drinks. Service from this point was very speedy, even with the drive-thru busy at almost 5 in the afternoon. The food was exactly what I expected from Sonic--good flavor that beats most places. It's also good to find a place where you can sit outside under a canopy, so you're not fried like the burgers. While the tables are a loose wire mesh, not everything falls through, and they need to clean more often but it's not any worse than other places with outdoor seating that I've visited. read more

Finally something in Modesto that tasted good. Don't expect a five star restaurant but the quality of the food is much better than the mjc cafeteria and any other restaurant in Modesto I have tired so far. The Atmosphere outside is better parking away from the gas station , it's sad but the parking lot does have homeless people on the side of the building living,loitering about , so really doesn't feel comfortable to eat in your car with them watching you. There are more homeless people sitting outside the restaurant but if you can get over that and just get some food to go this place is awesome. I had a large cherry limeade probably the best drink on the menu it was amazing fresh limes a very sweet cherry juice with Sprite most likely added and cherry on top with crushed ice, it was perfect. The burger was a little burnt on the edges and kinda messy but overall tasted good. The koni dog with chili and cheese was ok, probably the least good tasting thing and the chili cheese tater tots are out of this world and are unbelievable, I also recommend the peanut butter Oreo shake a new favorite milkshake flavor for sure Overall this is much higher quality fast food chain with a very dirty and hobo full parking lot read more

HORRIBLE!! I was in the drive thru line well before 10 pm. Unfortunately there was a long line. Finally, I was next in line, then all of a sudden the lights turned off. The truck in front of me was waiting and nobody attempted to take his order. The employees pulled a bitchass move. Just completely ignored us. After they served one last car, the girl at the window walked away. Talk about assholes! I would get fired if I kicked clients out right when it turns midnight bcuz my shift is over. BEWARE!! we stopped here for a cookie dough blast, shake and soda. As we driving back home I bite down and almost break my tooth on what I thought was glass at first. Took out and noticed it's a type of plastic or plexi glass type thing. I tried calling the store as soon as I realized what it was cause I was already about 20 minutes away and the phone just keeps on ringing and no answer. After about 10 minutes of calling I called cooperate and all they offered me was a coupon and when I asked if they already contacted the sonic they said they emailed the incident report. I stop in here several mornings a week on my way to work for a soda, nothing more than a single fountain drink. Each and every time, I am left waiting for more than 6 minutes. There has not been a time when I was in and out in under 6 minutes. Meanwhile, other cars are pulling in after me, and ordering food, and are not left waiting, and leaving before me. This morning, I waited 8 minutes from the time I placed my order for a large coke, and nothing more. At the 8 minute mark, I left. During that time, three other people pulled in, ordered, received their items, and left. This is not okay. I have called this store several times, and the phone is never answered. Why are simple orders left waiting for 6-10 minutes while full orders are out before them? Are we not spending enough money to make us worth a decent amount of service? This is ridiculous. read more

So i while i showed up and tried to order i was hit with. Oh we dont have onion rings. Ok no biggie. I asked for a cheesebirger plain with ketchup and got a regular burger with no cheese on it at all. Asked for a large reses blaster and was told no reses but they said they ended up finding some. Kept goin on in my order and got the french toast meal and asked for root beer for a drink and what a suprise when i heard we dont have any. I was in line in the drive thru and had already waited 25 min to find out most of what i wanted was out... when i recieved my order i got upset when i got home to find 1. No cheese on cheeseburger and not plain 2. French toast didnt come with any syrup 3. My wifes reses blast only had a little bit of sprinkles on top and a whole cup of plain ice cream. The other location shut down and they were terrible. Now this location is getting just as bad. Gonna loose my service if i keep getting bad orders. A tater tot tastes the same here as in Phoenix as in Pennsylvania, etc. But, people! Why has no one mentioned the half price happy hours?! All sodas and slushies, including my cherished diet Strawberry Limeade (with real limes in there!) are HALF OFF! As to the rest of the menu... During a junk food binge that I'm not proud of while studying for the bar exam I headed down here and ordered about half of the items off the dollar menu. That said, I'd strongly prefer a burger elsewhere. The tots are reminiscent of the elementary school cafeteria. The onion rings are pretty good. I came here yesterday after ordering on the app almost five hours ahead. It makes it very fast and convenient, although I had minor technical issues with the app. Fast forward to getting my order, when I drove up to one of the stalls, there are no numbers indicated on the menu boards so I could check in on the app. I actually had to call an employee and ask what stall number I was in. Absolutely hate this sonic. I try to avoid it at all costs. This is the 3rd time I have come to this sonic recently where they conveniently are out of ice cream around 10pm. This last time while waiting in the drive thru 20 minutes only to be told that once again. I used to go to the one on Briggsmore because atleast that would happen but since they are closed down I was forced to come here again. How are you out of ice cream 3 Friday nights a little after 10pm. So does that mean no ice cream all weekend or you just don't want to make anymore blasts or shake close to your 11pm closing time. If any Sonic management or member of corporate office ever bothers to visit Yelp, then I hope you will at the very least read this review. You need to step it up. Severely. I have been to your Merced location and loved it. The shakes were phenomenal, the food was good, and the staff was timely and helpful and got me exactly what I wanted. Great experience. Now we need that kind of service HERE. The food is always sloppily assembled and lacking. The shakes are more like thick milk with some syrups thrown in and not always blended evenly. Don't get me started on the staff - I've worked customer service for five years now, and I've had my share of mistakes and brain farts, but when it's this consistent, it's ridiculous. I have had to repeat things so many times, corrected them on their mistakes to my orders, from forgotten sauces to giving me jalapeño poppers when I ask for mozzarella sticks. I mean, I work nearby and would like to stop there for a quick lunch or drink so I don't come back late. But I've since learned better than to do that, because this Sonic's service is somehow ALWAYS slow, whether you drive thru, drive in, or walk up, and even when there's only a car or two in front of you. I have no idea how this location is still in business when their service (or lack thereof) is so consistently BAD! And it's not like it's just one or two individuals, it's literally anyone that helps you seems to be spacing out or something. Maybe this company doesn't treat their employees right, because they sure act like they care about effort put into their work. But what do I know, maybe it's a bigger issue than that. My advice to you, Sonic, is to completely gut out the staff of this store and try again. The only thing I'll ever buy from this location are their half-priced custom beverages. Those are actually good, but hardly worth risking getting my order wrong or waiting for 20+ minutes. Hire some people from Merced or transfer some from your Merced location, they're clearly far more competent than wherever you found these employees for your Modesto location on McHenry. read more

Arrive SEMI-hungry. We waited in the drive thru for over 30 minutes... no exaggeration! The food is a disgrace to fast food, especially after waiting that long. It just isn't tasty, it is greasy. The drinks however are pretty awesome. I do like their happy hour program, for calorie loaded sugary drinks, other than that I don't see myself coming back. Oh- I will say that I love their ice. Crushed ice (and you ice fanatics out there know what I am talking about) makes the drinks taste better. They have crushed ice, and they even sell it by the bag. read more
