Basically you can ignore the one-star reviews by outsiders as just another sign of mass formation psychosis. Masks, so heavily touted by the mockingbird media, have proven to be totally ineffectual against a microscopic airborne virus. Real protection during that flu season was granted by taking D3 along with a medically suggested protocol. Now, that being said, Sonnewald is my go-to place for health and well-being. What a hidden little gem this place is. Quite literally in the middle of nowhere, but easily accessed. Great produce, bulk foods, groceries, dairy, vitamins, bath and beauty products... I never could understand why my grandmother would make long trips to this place from maryland over the years, but I soon realized why after I made a trip up there to see what the buzz was about... Their customer service is definitely the best I've experienced in a natural grocery store. The first time I was there, one of the ladies who works there showed me around the place and helped me find what I was looking for. The employees are friendly and knowledgeable. If I lived closer, I'd be shopping there 1-2 times a week (unfortunately I live in Maryland, about 45 min away). So I only go there 1-2 times a month because of how far away I am. So much selection! They have everything from vegetables, snacks, milk, and a lot of self care items. They have a whole section for vitamins and essential oils. Even toothpaste! I love Sonnewald's!! Yes, a little small. But, produce is always fresh! Love the bulk room in back. The supplements and smoothie additions are the best and most extensive I've seen even compared to Moms market in Lutherville. If you can't find something, ask as it's sometimes found in wonky areas of store (I thought, but they know what they're doing). If they don't have it, they'll gladly order it. Employees have always been super helpful and it's obvious they care about what they're telling you/recommending. I've bought groceries, plants, supplements, books, and even compost for my garden there (by the truck full). I always felt "at home" when shopping there. The employees are real and authentic and I personally like that (rather that then fake happy plastic). Sadly, I no longer live nearby, so going there is a treat rather than a weekly occurrence. I recently picked up some groceries here. I moved to the general area from Towson so I'm used to one of the best organic/natural food stores Mom's, plus Wegman's, Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. This market was small, but they did carry familiar products. The produce section was small, but had a pretty good selection. The peaches I bought were some of the best I have ever had. I also picked up a few local raw milk cheeses that were great. The store is very clean and pretty easy to navigate. Although their selection isn't huge, they do carry stuff the chain grocers don't. read more

First time Saturday. I agree previous reviews Sonnewald is a fabulous resource for the area. I purchased Walking With Grace Weed Walk, raw milk (2.00 deposit for glass jar), various nuts/seeds and the Sonnewald Tonic (tea) which is touted to cure everything. I would suggest you go when you have time to mill around and take advantage of any samples being offered. A word of caution...some of the packaged goods are pricer then Giant (those I was interested in), I hate to say it but it's so. :/ I will be back again. read more

May I quote Sonnewald's own statement: "Your well-being is important to us." Well, apparently not. My husband and I just visited this store. They have a sign posted outside their door that says, "Masks Optional". We found this to be not only disturbing, but odd for a store that "promotes" (?) well-being. One of the owners of the store checked us out. He was not wearing a mask. We tried our best to stay as far away from him as possible. On a previous visit, none of the employees were wearing masks. Not a big store but a nice selection of a variety of food household and personal care items. The BEST thing about this store is their refrigerated bulk foods room where you can purchase as little or as much of any food item as you wish. Everything from pastas to spices dried beans oats granola dried fruits natural salt and many other items that are not readily locally available. They also have a great selection of health supplements. Anyone trying to live a more healthful life should definitely visit their store! read more

This store is an amazing resource. I always leave there having purchased far more than I had initially intended because of their awesome selection of products. Organic makes a huge difference - can you say "Enviornmental endocrine disruptors"? As for "guidelines" refer to definition; personally, I respect and prefer personal freedom, but, then again, everything isn't for everybody. If negative reviewers think a simple mask will save your life, then you have really swallowed the kool-aid. If a person's state of health is so compromised that a bout of influenza could prove fatal, then that person should probably stay home rather than rely on a mask. I hate to give a small business such a low review but the fact that they are doing next to nothing to limit the spread of Covid is forcing my hand. I went in to get a specific spice, and was the only customer in the store wearing a mask. Of the employees, very few were wearing masks properly and none were wearing gloves. There is no social distancing enforced whatsoever. I never thought in the middle of a pandemic I'd have to worry about someone literally breathing down my neck but here we are. The bulk foods are the major draw to this place, and they do have gloves provided but are not enforcing their use, and again masks are not required. There is no way to guarantee the sanitation of the bulk foods if they're letting people walk around massless, breathing and coughing into the bins of food. I really hope they get their act together and try to keep their customers safe, but more than a year into a pandemic it seems chances of that are slim. Major yikes. read more

It's hard to find good resources for organics in this area in general. I love Sonnewald, I just wish it was closer to me. I always thought there might be a chance they would open a store near Dallastown, but I suppose that's wishful thinking, haha! So, I think my favorite part of the store has to be the back room with all the grains, nuts, seeds, etc. I love buying a mix of these items and making my own cereals and snacks. I've also purchased their liquid Castile soap and they have a great selection of vitamins, supplements etc. I would have given them 5 stars except that I've had a couple of days (not many, but a few) where I've gone into the store and run into a grumpy employee. I know we all have our bad days, but I think the company could totally get five stars if they put a little focus into encouraging their employees and creating a positive environment in the store. read more

I grew up about 20 minutes from Sonnewalds, and had no idea it existed until two or three years ago. Now every time I visit home I stop here and get my groceries. It's about 1/2 the size of a whole foods, but the book, bulk produce, and vitamin sections rival that of Rainbow in San Francisco. this is a great natural food store - it is absolutely the best in the area - largest, best selection, lowest prices and great customer service. their produce section has all organic produce, some of which they try to source locally when in season. their vitamin and supplement selection is enormous. they offer nutritional and supplement counseling for free and will take the time to listen to your problems and offer holistic solutions for you. there is a huge bulk foods room with nuts, beans, pasta, rice, sugar, and the walls are lined with spice jars that you can take anything from a pinch to several pounds of. this is great for when you need just a little saffron or want to save yourself lots of money over the mccormick/grocery store brands. they have lots of natural beauty products including burts bees and dr bonners. many different kinds of cereal and snacks. they also sell raw milk and some local meats including venison. if you stick to the produce and bulk room you will come out with a bill that is much much lower than the grocery store. the natural soaps/detergents etc are pricey but much lower cost than anywhere else that i've ever looked - including amazon and giant. read more

This store continues to be a disappointment. It was great at one time. However, they sell merchandise that other area stores do not (but not enough of a selection for me return on a regular basis) and the prices are fair. Their shopping hours are limited and outdated, no website to shop on, rude employees, no mobility shopping carts, will not order new merchandise to have in stock on a regular basis for customers. I visited Sonnewald a few weeks ago for the first time. I expected it to be a little pricey (eating a natural, healthful diet always is, unfortunately) but I'm willing to pay a little more to support a mom and pop business instead of buying at the organic section of Giant. Unfortunately, the prices were more than a little higher, and to top it off, the cashier was incredibly rude and unfriendly. The selection was not as good as I had expected it, either. My wife and I made the trip to Sonnewald this morning. It seems they've abandoned their mission as a "health conscious" store. Masks optional? Once inside, I saw that less than half the customers and staff were wearing masks, and their was no concern with 6-foot distancing. It is dangerous and irresponsible to operate this way, especially when many of the clientele are elderly, and there is a room with bulk bins anyone can access. Are the owners uncaring, or do they just consider themselves to be public health experts who are smarter than the scientists? If they think it's a political statement, that's even worse. Whatever their reasoning, it is inexcusable in these times. We have been regular customers for several years, but never again. We'll spend our money in safer environment. I absolutely love this place! It's a nice drive out in the hills and valleys of York County, but I digress. You can find any type of organic food there, from fresh to frozen. They also have a wellness section with all kinds of vitamins and herbal remedies. I especially like the bulk foods section. From granola with hemp seeds to milled grains this place has it. I really like the Journey brand of sodas they carry. If you live within an hour of York county I would highly recommend making the drive! read more

I have been shopping at Sonnewald's for the past five years, and love it! As an alternative/holistic nurse, I am always looking for healthy foods and herbs, to take to improve my health. Their cold room is par excellance! I have been to many health food stores in my lifetime, and have never found one that was so clean and had such high quality items. I have also never found a cold room that was so well stocked, either. They have their bulk herbs on the top shelves of the room, alphabetized from A-Z. Yes, their prices (on some things) are a bit high, but for the most part, I have found that they are competitive with the local grocery store, and the products they sell are much healthier. Three years ago, I learned about Grace Lefever's annual Weed Walk, which is usually from May through July. I went on my first Weed Walk, that Spring and have gone every Spring since. I learned a lot from Grace, and then bought the books she recommends, and now consider myself somewhat of an herbologist (of sorts. : ) I also have become friends with Grace, who is an amazing lady. :D It's a 30 minute drive (each way), for me to visit Sonnewald, so I usually only get there once a month. However, I do look forward to my visit every time I go. read more

This store is out of the way for me to get to. But I go here every once In awhile when I need something that can only be found in a natural health food store. After watching Dr. Oz, at the end of February, I made a special trip to Sonnewald's to purchase some supplements. They had none of them in stock, but offered to order them for me. I received my call last week that they had arrived and would only be held until the 24th. Monday I made a special trip out there to pick up my order, they were closed (which wasn't mentioned in the phone message). So today I trekked out there again only to discover that they had no record of my order, but I had gotten a call that it was there. I doubt that I will do business here any more. I should have just ordered my supplements on line, but I wanted to give an independent business my money. read more
