This is a large nursery with a delightful design. They have lots of garden art & pots, in addition to plants. It is fun to visit & great to have lots to choose from the BEST thing about Sonoma Mission Nursery is their friendly, unusually knowledgeable staff. I have never visited a nursery where every employee seems to have EXTENSIVE knowledge about what makes plants thrive. This place is like an oasis. More than a place to buy plants, pots, seeds and flowers. It's a horticultural showplace. It's easy to lose yourself in the expansive 4 acres of arboretum-like bliss. A wide array of so many things are there, from the traditional to a bit of the whimsical. From the usual to the unusual and from the perennial to the exotic, Sonoma Mission Gardens has just about everything. Plenty of parking, staff is helpful and friendly. Even if you don't do much gardening, it is well worth the visit. read more

Quaint local nursery that I have been coming to off and on for the past 15 years. Always nice to have a local nursery to help support local, especially in Sonoma County where the movement is quite large. This is not the largest facility, but they carry a lot of your needs for your home without making a run downtown to one of the larger businesses. Yes, they can be a tad more expensive, but worth it if you live nearby. The gardens are quite peaceful and the staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. I understand that they also offer home landscape remodeling, but honestly I can give no feedback on that as I only use them for gardening needs. Also, always keep an eye out for their a-frame signs near the road as they boast some decent deals from time to time. read more

Poor review based solely on the bird situation I witnessed here. To see birds locked up in small filthy cages is extremely sad and disappointing. I saw a pigeon locked in a small cage filled with waste by itself, picking its feathers. How is this acceptable? I don't have knowledge about the birds or why they are there but this just looks inhumane. There are similar reviews for this business from 6 and 7 years ago. Sad. As a local I love supporting local Sonoma businesses but I can't shop here in good conscience. read more

Beware of a dishonest business When you're purchasing plants here there's a clear promise to stand by them... "we'll take them back if it doesn't work out". When you try to return plants that obviously weren't appropriate to sell, they tell you: these needed to be watered TWICE A DAY. Won't take the return. So unethical, I'm really sorry I supported this business. Go anywhere else. read more

Gorgeous grounds and a fun place to walk around and find some more unique plants than your usual big-box nursery. There are a few pens of birds that really add to the fun of walking around. The staff members we interacted with were all friendly and knowledgeable. It is definitely on the pricier end and not the best place if you're looking for a deal on common plants, but a real treat if you want to find something special. read more

Wish I were a local-I'd hit up Sonoma Mission Gardens more often! The BF and I were spending a day up in the area so I decided to hit up this wonderful little garden store. They pack a lot in to their corner location with healthy looking outdoor plants, great deals on pots and unique outdoor decorative items. I was on the lookout for a new Salvia plant, since they seem to thrive on my sunny, warm patio and found the perfect one. For the last week, it's been thriving and growing nicely. Really enjoyed my stop here and the healthy, vibrant plants they sell. A great stop if you have your own garden. read more

In my journey to grow a garden that could feed us all year round (an ambitious project since I've never had a houseplant that lived), I bought dozens and dozens of gardening books. After reading them, cross-referencing them, dispairing of the conflicting advice and just plain reaching the point of giving up, I took one last tactic. I visited the extensive and wonderful green space that is Sonoma Mission Gardens. I threw myself at the mercy of one of their helpful, knowledgable staff and said, "I don't know anything, it's March, I'm in Sonoma, what vegetables should I plant and how?" They spent over an hour with me and set me up perfectly. Now I know that their "starts" section (where you can buy small plants instead of seeds) is always what should be planted right now. They also clearly mark their seed section (mostly heirloom) by what is ready to be planted now. I've thrown away my gardening books and now each season I just go to their starts and plant now seed section, get a quick top up of knowledge and advice from one of the staff and I'm ready to go. The garden has been a success and we've had amazing crops of corn, lettuce, carrots, potatoes, melons, squash, peppers, tomatoes, even cauliflower which I'm told is one of the most difficult vegetables to grow. Their seeds and starts are top quality, their products are always the best and the staff can not be beat for their knowledge of local growing and weather patterns. Sometimes, even when I don't need any gardening supplies, I just wander in to enjoy the gardens and watch the peacocks and other exotic birds that are displayed in roomy coops there. read more

I have been coming here for many, many years. Sonoma Mission Gardens designed a beautiful yard for me. However, over the years, I noticed there is a tall women at the register that is pompous, rude, unhelpful and very unfriendly. The women working with the plants are so wonderful. It is such a wonderful experience until you get to the register. I think I'll support some of the other fine nurseries in the area and there are quite a few. read more

I moved to Sonoma in August of 2018 and have only recently discovered Sonoma Mission Gardens. I had heard it was an awesome place and it disappoint! Employees are so welcoming and happy to assist. Every plant is healthy, not root-bound and just beautiful. I was purchasing items for my vegetable garden and flower garden and their selection was huge, with many unique varieties! My favorite part of the business were the goats! They also have aviaries and wonderful chickens. read more

Sonoma Mission Gardens is a little Garden of Eden, a short jaunt from the Sonoma Ashram. There are peacocks, mourning doves, goats, a menagerie among the plants. There is an astounding array of tomatoes- from Caspian pink to Early Girl and San Marzano. In a pond, there is a phallic Green Man statue thrusting up from the waters. It's like walking through a jungle, the vegetation is that extensive. It's also labyrinthine. They have a great variety of gardening tools&plant food, including plant foods with psychedelic labels. After all, this is Sonoma and it's not surprising to see guys in tie-dyed shirts there. It's a beautiful, fertile little getaway. read more

Very sad situation of birds in cages. One pulled out it's own feathers. Dirty, depressing & cruel. When you walk down the back alley there are lots of chickens permanently locked in filthy small cages. Something out of a nightmare! Should be illegal in this day and age to keep animal slaves like this. I think it's because of the caretaker, manager or owner. Plants: they make some effort to have non-GMO and organic starts which is great. Staff: very friendly and helpful. Hard working. Very nice. Wish I could give it 5 stars, but haven't seen animal cruelty like this in some time except for at VJB Vineyards down the road. I noted an adorable pigmy rooster walking around the gardens helping to keep the place clean of bugs. They said it belonged to the neighbor and kept escaping and coming over there. We finally got our property landscaped, and our landscaper referred us here. I walked in, said I had no knowledge of plants, and had no idea what I wanted. An hour later, I had picked out enough fruit trees, grasses and flowers to landscape all the space! The woman that helped me was so patient and knowledgeable, and she made me feel so comfortable. They can help identify troubling diseases or pests as well as direct you to the best plant to fit that tricky area of your garden. Their 6 packs and 4" section of the nursery offers un-paralled options for vegetable starts, annuals and perennials. The only thing that I don't choose to source here is the shrubs or larger plants. While the quality of plants is great the prices are exorbitant compared to other nurseries in the area. Absolutely love shopping here! Within the past year I moved to Sonoma Valley and have been more than pleased with Sonoma Mission Gardens. It is nice to know that there are still beautiful nurseries as this one. I was put on a task by my employer to create 8 succulent bowls. Having never embarked on this type of creativity I decided to let the "professionals" help me. I was greeted by Jan whom I instantly felt an affinity for. Her warm smile and willingness to assist me was very much appreciated. I asked her if it would be ok if I watched her assemble the first bowl so I could learn how to make them. Midway though we were firmly told by Debra that we were in the wrong area to be doing such a thing. I was not feeling great about the interaction and decided that I would leave it up to them to create the other 7 bowls. By the time I left I was more than irritated and had a less than pleasant interaction with Amy at the register. That evening I decided that the ladies were probably having an "off" day and that I would revisit them in the morning and see if it was just me. Upon my return I was happy to find that Debra and Amy were very friendly and helpful. Yes, just a bad day. The succulent bowls turned out beautiful and I have Jan and Nelly to thank. I think Sonoma Mission Gardens is a spectacular nursery and employs some very unique, knowledgeable and powerful women. I have had no interactions with male employees there but what I can say is that the group of women, when they are working together, are exceptional and when they are working against one another, it is palpable. MY DREAM BACKYARD REMODEL! Sonoma Mission Gardens redid my Whole backyard in under 2 weeks including new fence, retaining wall and pergola. It is my dream backyard, better then I could have ever imagined. David Solmes IS THE MAN!!!! He was an amazing designer, great project manager and very collaborative all while being sensitive to my budget. Most landscapers want thousands for designs, their price for drawings is reasonable and we went through at least 10 during the project because he wanted it to be perfect for us, didn't want to settle! Selection is good, staff is knowledgeable, if a little stand-offish sometimes. Always ready to load your car for you. They ARE more expensive, but never--in more than a decade--has one of their plants failed or succumbed to my iffy gardening skills. Bring them a "plant with a problem" from your yard and they'll ID it and suggest a range of solutions. By the way, the first two years I visited them, I went for the exotic birds living in airy outdoor enclosures in the back...then I finally realized the plants were the main attraction. If your child has never seen a peacock showing off, or a variety of other interesting birds, bring them here to watch and learn while you shop. They advertise as wheelchair accessible but outdoor aisles are narrow, even for the perfectly abled. Parking lot is gravel, so hard for wheels to navigate. If you have help, go there anyway! read more

Absolutely beautiful nursery in Sonoma with grounds that you have to see to believe. Beautiful selection of Japanese maples and unusual perennials but I fell in love with their succulent and rush combinations they chose for planted pots. The combinations of succulents, grasses and rushes are unique and beautiful. They are also having a Fall sale on everything in the nursery so I got a great deal on a pot and plant to go in it. I would definitely go back and if you haven't been it's quite the treat and an easy day trip while exploring Sonoma County. read more

Best nursery. Nope. Incorrect. Best Gardens. Theirs and now mine! I drove up to Sonoma specifically to visit this place. I heard it was wonderful and that was correct. Right off the bat: if you need a container filled with fantastic greenery that is artistic and unusual...go there. If you are looking for a great water fountain of any size...go there. If you are looking for normal plants or ones you do not find everywhere...go there. The staff if very helpful, very knowledgeable and very nice. And they have great garden art. I did not know I needed garden art until I found fun things to add interest and whimsy to a very practical raised bed veggie garden. I withdrew our agreement after I learned that the principal in charge was too busy to pay attention, respond, lead or manage. I guess $28,000 wasn't enough for us to actually be communicated with. Sonoma Mission Gardens did my landscape design and installation. Earlier, in younger days, I had a garden maintenance business and am knowledgeable about good planting practices. SMG far surpassed my expectations in their careful planting and finishing touches. One of the trees they planted did not thrive in unforeseen windy conditions and they immediately replaced it with an alternative. I went to look for drought tolerant, preferably California native plants for a large planter. I ended up with 4 varieties (2 grasses, 2 shrubs). Santa Barbara Daisy, Sonoma Manzanita, calamagrostis foliosa, carex flacca blue zinger! I can count on this nursery for harder to find plants. The big boxes and other home improvement stores are cheaper, as someone said earlier and I agree, for shrubs and larger plantings your budget could be an issue. I try to balance my shopping and include smaller and locally owned businesses if I feel there is value to the extra cost. And that's how I feel about Sonoma Mission Gardens. Without this local business we would have even fewer choices to shop in Sonoma. For local Sonoma residents, this matters! I get pretty tired of having to go out of town for shopping. read more

Wow! This is a great nursery. I come from Walnut Creek to shop here. They have great variety and more than enough stock. They carry different specimens and plantings. The outside sculpture and garden ornaments are wonderful and I haven't seen them anywhere else. They have all the fertilizers and clippers and drip system stuff available. They also have an aviary which I haven't seen any other nursery. It is cool. And the nursery staff is cool too. We make a day of it. Come to the nursery then travel to downtown Sonoma for a meal. Whether you come from Walnut Creek or down the street this place is a treat. read more
